Hello everyone, friends of Hive, a great community of movies and TV shows, I hope you're all doing great! This time I'll give you my personal opinions on the movie: "Companion." January is always like that month... meh, right? Pure filler stuff, you don't expect much. I watched it as a "well, let's see if it helps to pass the time" kind of thing, but noooome, I really liked it! So, imagine: it’s about this seemingly perfect couple, Josh and Iris – who, by the way, are performing really well by Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher… I’ll tell you more about them later. Well, they spend a weekend at this house, super modern, super cool, next to a lake… the house belongs to a mysterious Russian, Sergei, and they meet up with other friends: another couple, Eli and Patrick – Harvey Guillén and Lukas Gage give them a really cool vibe – and Cat, a friend of Josh’s, who Iris doesn’t seem to like from the start… and she’s right!

At first, everything’s cool, relaxed, your typical get-together with friends by the lake, but… you feel like something’s not right, right? And things get dark, but fast! Secrets start to come out, tensions that were hidden there, and suddenly everything turns super ugly, with greed involved... and well, let's just say that bodies start appearing... now, well, let's get to the point... the marketing! Look, if you've already seen the second trailer or even the poster... then you probably already know Iris's "big secret".. aha, how angry I was when I saw the poster! I was like "Are you serious!? Why the hell are they spoiling that!?" I almost went into it thinking "they've already ruined half the vibe for me".. but you know what the craziest thing is?

That in the end... no! I mean, they do reveal it, but very early on in the movie, like 15, 20 minutes in, it's not like they've spoiled the surprise twist at the end; it's more like... part of the basis of the story, you know what I mean? And honestly, knowing this beforehand even made the early scenes feel... different, maybe even more interesting... because you immediately catch all the double-entendres, the weird things he says. So, while I still think the marketing guys went too far (seriously, gang, just give us funky teasers, don't tell us everything!), don't let that stop you if you already know... really, it doesn't ruin the experience at all, and phew, there are still tons of surprises to come.

En esta ocasión les daré mis opiniones personales de la película: "Companion".. enero siempre es como ese mes... meh, ¿no? Puras cosas de relleno, uno no espera mucho.. yo la vi tipo "bueno, a ver si sirve pa' pasar el rato", ¡pero noooombre, me gustó mucho! Entonces, imagínense: la cosa va de esta pareja que parece súper perfecta, Josh e Iris – que por cierto, qué buenas actuaciones las de Jack Quaid y Sophie Thatcher.. ya luego les platico más de ellos, bueno, se lanzan un fin de semana a una casa así, súper moderna, súper wow, junto a un lago.. la casa es de un ruso medio misterioso, Sergei, ahí se juntan con otros amigos: otra pareja, Eli y Patrick – Harvey Guillén y Lukas Gage les dan una onda genial – y Cat, una amiga de Josh, que a Iris como que no le da buena espina desde el principio... y la verdad, ¡tiene razón!

Al inicio todo es buena onda, relax, la típica reunión de amigos junto al lago, pero... sientes que algo no va bien, ¿no? y las cosas se ponen oscuras pero ¡rápido! Empiezan a salir secretos, tensiones que estaban ahí guardadas, y de repente todo se vuelve súper feo, con avaricia metida... y bueno, digamos que empiezan a aparecer cuerpos.. ahora, bueno, vamos al tema... ¡el marketing! Miren, si ya vieron el segundo tráiler o hasta el póster... pues seguro ya saben el "gran secreto" de Iris.. ajá, cómo me enojé cuando vi el póster! Dije "¿¡Es en serio!? ¿¡Por qué rayos spoilean eso!?". Casi que entré a verlo pensando "ya me arruinaron la mitad de la onda".. pero, ¿saben qué es lo más loco?

Que al final... ¡no! O sea, sí lo revelan, pero bien temprano en la película, como a los 15, 20 minutos, no es que te hayan quemado el giro sorpresa del final; es más como... parte de la base de la historia, ¿me explico? Y la verdad, saberlo antes hasta hizo que las primeras escenas se sintieran... distintas, quizás hasta más interesantes.. porque captas al toque todas las frases con doble sentido, las cosas raras que dice. Así que, aunque sigo pensando que los de marketing se pasaron (¡en serio, banda, nomás dennos teasers con ondita, no nos cuenten todo!), no dejen que eso los frene si ya lo saben.. de verdad, no arruina la experiencia para nada, y ¡uf!, todavía quedan un montón de sorpresas más.

Let’s see, something I loved about Companion is how it takes a ton of different genres and boom!, mixes them and it works really well. It has its very romantic parts, I mean, you do feel the chemistry (or when there’s none) between the couples… then it goes into thriller mode, one of those that makes your hair stand on end, the tension rises, it also has its touch of terror, right? Not so much the easy scares, the jump scare, but more like those ideas that leave you thinking, kind of murky, and some scenes of violence… ugh!, very graphic, they even make you wrinkle your face… with all that on top of it… it’s hilarious! There were moments of bursting out laughing, but seriously, I’m kind of particular about horror comedies, because a lot of times it feels forced, you know? Or one genre takes away from the other… but here… they nail it!

The humor comes out naturally, from how the characters react, how crazy the situation gets and from some phrases that, boom!, fall at just the right moment. There were a couple of times, especially with how uncomfortable or crude some of the conversations were, that I couldn't hold back my laughter... that balance is super hard to achieve, but they did it! It could appeal to a lot of different people... speaking of the production... Do you notice that they mention the Barbarian team? Well, you do feel that connection in the quality and in that vibe of being kind of twisted, you know? Just like Barbarian, Companion keeps you guessing the whole time and shakes your stomach several times, you feel that same DNA of "what the hell is going on?" and that something isn't right... pay attention here, Companion doesn't have those crazy... tonal changes... they are similar in that you enjoy both of them more if you come in without knowing much (how ironic, with all the marketing!), it has really good twists and they come from people who clearly love playing with us, the audience.

A ver, algo que me encantó de Companion es cómo agarra un montón de géneros distintos y ¡pum!, los mezcla y le queda súper bien, tiene sus partes bien románticas, o sea, sí sientes la química (o cuando no hay nada) entre las parejas.. luego se pone modo thriller, de esos que te ponen los pelos de punta, la tensión va subiendo, también tiene su toque de terror, ¿eh? No tanto el susto fácil, el jump scare, sino más bien esas ideas que te dejan pensando, medio turbias, y unas escenas de violencia... ¡uf!, bien gráficas, que hasta te hacen arrugar la cara.. con todo eso encima... ¡es divertidísima! hubo momentos de soltar la carcajada, pero en serio, yo soy medio especialito con la comedia de terror, porque muchas veces se siente a la fuerza, ¿saben? O un género le quita peso al otro.. pero aquí... ¡lo clavan!

El humor sale naturalito, de cómo reaccionan los personajes, de lo loca que se pone la situación y de unas frases que ¡pum!, caen en el momento justo, hubo un par de veces, sobre todo con lo incómodo o lo crudo de algunas pláticas, que no aguanté la risa.. ese balance es súper difícil de lograr, pero ¡se lo lograron! Le puede gustar a un montón de gente diferente.. hablando de la producción... ¿Ubican que mencionan al equipo de Barbarian? Bueno, pues sí se siente esa conexión en la calidad y en esa onda de ser medio retorcidos, ¿saben? Igual que Barbarian, Companion te tiene adivinando todo el tiempo y te mueve el piso varias veces, sientes ese mismo ADN de "¿qué diablos está pasando?" y de que algo no está bien.. aquí pongan atención, Companion no tiene esos cambios de tono tan.. locos.. sí se parecen en que las dos las disfrutas más si llegas sin saber mucho (¡qué irónico, con lo del marketing!), tiene giros buenísimos y vienen de gente a la que claramente le encanta jugar con nosotros, el público.

Okay, now let's talk about the acting. Jack Quaid as Josh is a great fit! He has that good-guy vibe, kind of dumb at first that you like, right? But little by little you see that he has his... complicated, darker side as things progress... it's a really cool character development, they show you what he's like, they don't just tell you, but watch out! The one who steals it for me is Sophie Thatcher as Iris. HOLY CRAP! What a performance! You see Iris having a hard time, discovering things about herself, about Josh, what's up with control, with being... well, her... her journey really draws you in. I saw her in Heretic last year (also really good, by the way!) and with this, phew! It's clear that she's got serious talent... I wouldn't be surprised at all to see her killing it in more horror/thriller movies.

She just has... something, a presence... the chemistry with Quaid, you totally believe it! The rest of them are also awesome! Harvey Guillén as Eli, brilliant! The poor cool dude caught up in all the mess... Lukas Gage as Patrick gives it that weird mix of innocence and, like... intensity, everyone puts a ton of effort into it, you can tell... and look, beyond the excitement and the laughter, Companion delves into... dense topics, but without getting heavy, you know? It talks about love, of course, but also about obsession, those toxic relationships that go rotten, about power and control..

Obviously, since Iris is an AI, she starts asking questions about consciousness, being yourself, what it means to be "real", who decides your life... all that artificial intelligence stuff, and the cool thing is that it wraps it all up in a story that hooks you and entertains you, so it never feels like homework or like you're being lectured. It leaves you thinking for a long time after it's over, and I always like that! It gives you more than just a good time... honestly, from start to finish, it had me glued! The story progresses in interesting ways that you don't expect. Just when you think you've got the hang of it, boom! They throw something else at you. The pacing is great, they build up the tension really well, and they know exactly when to throw in a joke or a moment of impact! to keep you there, hooked.

Okay, y ahora hablemos de las actuaciones, Jack Quaid como Josh, ¡le queda genial! tiene esa onda buena gente, medio menso al principio que te cae bien, ¿no? Pero poquito a poquito vas viendo que tiene su lado... complicado, más oscuro, conforme avanza la cosa.. es un desarrollo de personaje bien chido, te muestran cómo es, no nomás te lo cuentan, pero ¡ojo!, la que para mí se la roba es Sophie Thatcher como Iris. ¡NO-MAN-CHES! ¡Qué actuación! Ves a Iris pasándola difícil, descubriendo cosas de ella misma, de Josh, de qué onda con el control, con ser... pues ella.. su viaje te atrapa, yo la vi en Heretic el año pasado (¡buenísima también, por cierto!) y con esto, ¡uff!, queda claro que la chica tiene un talentazo.. no me sorprendería nada verla rompiéndola en más películas de terror/thriller.

Es que tiene... algo, una presencia.. la química con Quaid, ¡te la crees todita! Los demás también, ¡unos cracks! Harvey Guillén como Eli, ¡genial!, el pobre compa buena onda metido en todo el relajo.. Lukas Gage como Patrick le da esa mezcla rara de inocencia y como... intensidad, todos le echan un montón de ganas, se nota.. y miren, más allá de la emoción y las risas, Companion se mete con temas... densos, pero sin ponerse pesada, ¿saben? Habla de amor, claro, pero también de obsesión, de esas relaciones tóxicas que se van pudriendo, del poder y el control..

Obvio, como Iris es una IA, pues le entra a preguntas sobre la conciencia, ser tú mismo, qué significa ser "real", quién decide tu vida... todo eso de la inteligencia artificial, y lo chido es que te lo envuelve todo en una historia que te engancha y te divierte, así que nunca se siente como tarea o como que te están dando una clase. Te deja pensando un buen rato después de que acaba, y eso a mí ¡siempre me gusta! te da más que solo pasar el rato.. la verdad, de principio a fin, ¡me tuvo pegadísimo! La historia avanza de formas interesantes y que no te esperas, justo cuando crees que ya le agarraste la onda, ¡pum!, te sacan otra cosa, el ritmo está genial, van subiendo la tensión súper bien y saben perfecto cuándo meter un chiste o un momento de ¡impacto! para tenerte ahí, atrapado.

And you know what? This movie is perfect for watching with someone else... it's the ideal plan for a date or to watch it with your friends, with the gang. It keeps you hooked with suspense and twists, but you also laugh, and it's not one of those that traumatizes you if you're not a huge horror fan; they hit the nail on the head. You'll laugh, you'll be freaked out, and you'll definitely be left talking afterwards about why the characters did what they did... so, my final verdict? Phew! I loved Companion, it was like, wow! Something super fresh that was so needed: it's intelligent, you really laugh, it makes you tense when you least expect it, and the voices... how amazing! A great job! It changed the whole game for me, it surprised me for the better, especially because I was skeptical because of the marketing, remember? Is it perfect?

Mmm, not 100%... maybe some things in the plot feel a bit "just because" if you look hard enough, and maybe I would have liked them to put more horror into some parts... but they are just minor details, compared to how entertaining and well done the whole story is, I give Companion a 8.5/10... one of the best I've seen this year, so far, if you're looking for something different, something that mixes a little bit of everything, that keeps you guessing but also laughing, you have to see it, yes or yes! Especially if you like those thrillers with their dark humor and that touch of "what the heck is life?", you're going to like it! And well, that's all for today! Y ¿saben qué? está película está perfecta para verlo acompañado.. es el plan ideal pa' una cita o pa' verlo con los compas, con la banda, te mantiene picado con el suspenso y los giros, pero también te ríes y no es de esas que te trauman si no eres súper fan del terror, le atinaron justo al punto. Se van a reír, se van a sacar de onda, y fijo se quedan platicando después de por qué los personajes hicieron lo que hicieron.. así que, ¿mi veredicto final? ¡Uff!, me encantó Companion, fue como ¡wow!, algo súper fresco que ya hacía falta: es inteligente, te ríes de verdad, te pone tenso cuando menos te lo esperas y las voces... ¡qué bárbaro!, ¡un trabajazo! Me cambió toda la jugada, me sorprendió para bien, sobre todo porque yo iba con desconfianza por culpa del marketing, ¿se acuerdan? ¿Que si es perfecta?

Mmm, no al cien... a lo mejor algunas cositas de la trama se sienten medio "porque sí", si le buscas mucho, y tal vez a mí me hubiera gustado que le metieran más al terror en algunas partes.. pero son detallitos nomás, comparado con lo entretenida y bien hecha que está toda la historia, yo le doy a Companion un 8.5/10.. de lo mejorcito que he visto este año, hasta ahorita, si andan buscando algo diferente, algo que mezcle de todo un poco, que los tenga adivinando pero también riéndose, ¡tienen que verla, sí o sí! Sobre todo si te gustan esos thrillers con su humor negro y ese toquecito de "¿qué rayos es la vida?", ¡les va a gustar! Y bueno, eso es todo por hoy!
