Hello everyone, my friends who are fans of good stories, I hope you're all doing super well, dear Movies and TV Shows community, this time I want to share a new review with you, has it ever happened to you that after watching a movie, you have to be silent for a while, trying to process everything you just saw? Well, that's how I am after watching Queer... first, the director is the same one who gave us that electric tension in Challengers and, of course, the movie that basically defined that wave of summer desire, Call Me By Your Name... and well, it's back, and let me tell you that Queer is... something totally different, I mean, if Challengers was pure adrenaline straight to the vein, this is more like... I don't know, like a weird dream, one of those with a fever, that at times is beautiful and at times it takes you out of the loop. And the craziest thing is that he’s working with the same screenwriter, the same composer duo, and the same director of photography as in Challengers, but seriously, the vibe couldn’t be more different, it’s mind-blowing how he switches switches depending on the story; he has incredible range!

The film stars Daniel Craig, yes, yes, James Bond, THAT Daniel Craig... look, forget everything you associate with 007, this is perhaps the rawest, most vulnerable, most anti-Bond performance I’ve ever seen from him... it’s set in Mexico City, back in the 50s, in that half-murky, half-dense underworld, Craig plays Lee, an aging expatriate gringo with a history of addiction, who falls in love in an almost sickly way with a much younger boy, Allerton, played by Drew Stark.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que estén super bien, querida comunidad de Movies and TV Shows, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, a ustedes no les ha pasado que luego de ver una peli, tienen que estar un rato en silencio, tratando de procesar todo lo que acaban de ver? Bueno, así ando yo después de ver Queer.. primero, el director es el mismo que nos dio esa tensión eléctrica en Challgers y, claro, la peli que básicamente definió esa onda de deseo veraniego, Call Me By Your Name.. y bueno, pues ya volvió, y déjenme decirles que Queer es... otra cosa totalmente distinta, o sea, si Challengers fue adrenalina pura directo a la vena, esto es más como... no sé, como un sueño medio raro, de esos con fiebre, que a ratos es hermoso y a ratos te saca de onda. Y lo más loco es que trabaja con el mismo guionista, la misma dupla de compositores y el mismo director de foto que en Challengers, pero en serio, la vibra no podría ser más diferente, es alucinante cómo le cambia el switch según la historia; ¡tiene un rango increíble!

La peli la protagoniza Daniel Craig, sí, sí, el James Bond, ESE Daniel Craig.. miren, olvídense de todo lo que asocian con el 007, esta es quizás la actuación más cruda, más vulnerable, más anti-Bond que le he visto en la vida.. está ambientada en Ciudad de México, por allá de los años 50, en ese bajo mundo medio turbio, medio denso, Craig interpreta a Lee, un gringo expatriado, ya mayor, con rollos de adicción, que se enamora de una forma casi enfermiza de un chico mucho más joven, Allerton, interpretado por Drew Starky.

And this is where things get really interesting, the background, let’s say… the movie is based on a novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs, this guy is a GIANT of the Beat Generation, I read somewhere that he was described as a “mad teacher”, and the truth is, it fits the vibe of the movie quite a lot… but hold on to this – and this fact really blew my mind – it seems that Burroughs wrote Queer back in the 50s while he was awaiting trial for accidentally killing his wife. Can you believe it!? Knowing that kind of casts a really dark shadow over the whole movie, it’s not that they show it, but the movie kind of hints at that vibe of danger, of screwing up, and it definitely adds a layer of darkness and perhaps explains why the character is so tormented and self-destructive… and well, back to Craig. Honestly, he’s the one who holds this whole movie together. His performance is brutal. The guy just gives his all for this character, he’s a mix of contradictions: desperate to connect but super clumsy, intelligent but completely lost in addiction, desperate for something but perhaps incapable of loving in a healthy way. Craig conveys this deep loneliness, the kind that gets to your bones, that you feel throughout the entire movie. It’s not one of those performances that screams “give me an Oscar!” you know?

It’s super internal, very subtle, he tells you a lot of things just with his eyes or the way he moves, he was passionate, he’s not afraid to show himself vulnerable, he’s a mess. Without him, I think the movie, which gets really weird and unconventional, just wouldn’t work. It’s the kind of complex, dense role that I felt was his due, and he plays it incredibly well. Now, the plot itself... it's not that it has a super marked plot, in the classic sense, it rather follows Lee chasing Allerton through smoke-filled bars, and in that general haze of their lives with drugs and alcohol in Mexico... there's a whole section later on where they go on a trip into the jungle to look for a mysterious drug called yage, which is apparently something similar to ayahuasca... that's where the film takes a major turn, in how it looks and how it feels.

Y acá es donde la cosa se pone bien interesante, el trasfondo, digamos.. la peli está basada en una novela con el mismo nombre de William S. Burroughs, este tipo es GIGANTE de la Generación Beat, leí por ahí que lo describían como un "maestro loco", y la verdad, le pega bastante a la onda de la película.. pero agárrense con esto – y este dato me dejó helado, en serio – parece que Burroughs escribió Queer allá por los 50 ¡mientras esperaba el juicio por matar sin querer a su esposa ¿¡Pueden creerlo!? Saber eso como que le tira una sombra bien oscura a toda la película, no es que muestren eso, pero la peli como que te insinúa esa onda de peligro, de mandarse cagadas, y definitivamente le suma una capa de oscuridad y quizás explica por qué el personaje anda tan atormentado y con esa cosa autodestructiva.. y bueno, volviendo a Craig. Honestamente, él es el que sostiene toda esta película.. su actuación es brutal.. el tipo simplemente se deja la piel por este personaje, es una mezcla de contradicciones: desesperado por conectar pero súper torpe, inteligente pero perdidísimo en la adicción, con unas ganas locas de algo pero quizás incapaz de amar sanamente, Craig te transmite esa soledad profunda, de esa que te llega a los huesos, que se siente en toda la peli.. no es una actuación de esas que gritan "¡denme un Oscar!", ¿saben?

Es súper interna, muy sutil, te dice un montón de cosas solo con la mirada o cómo se mueve, era apasionado, no tiene ningún miedo de mostrarse vulnerable, hecho un desastre. Sin él, creo que la película, que se pone bien rara y poco convencional, simplemente no funcionaría.. es el tipo de papel complejo, denso, que yo sentía que ya le tocaba hacer, y lo hace increíble. Ahora, la trama en sí... no es que tenga una trama súper marcada, en el sentido clásico, más bien sigue a Lee persiguiendo a Allerton por bares llenos de humo, y como en esa neblina general de sus vidas con drogas y alcohol en México.. hay toda una parte más adelante donde se van de viaje a la selva a buscar una droga misteriosa llamada yage, que por lo visto es algo parecido a la ayahuasca.. ahí es donde la película pega un giro importante, en cómo se ve y cómo se siente.

And here we come to the style, my people, which is where I think Queer is going to divide waters, it is not an easy film, Guadagnino takes risks with a very interesting visual wave, at times it feels almost like theater... you realize that you are watching something put together, perhaps even half artificial, which seems to be on purpose and helps you understand the vibe of the film later on. It starts with a half-melancholic, romantic air, perhaps it reminds you a little of the vibe of Call Me By Your Name at the beginning, but that lasts for a breath, the film becomes increasingly surreal, more experimental and, I'll be honest, quite confusing, especially in the final stretch... this is a film that asks you to be there, immersed.

It relies heavily on the visual, the subtext, what isn't said. Yes, there's dialogue, but much of the important stuff is in how it's filmed, in how the characters move around each other, in the glances that tell you everything, in the silences... what they do is sometimes ambiguous, even confusing. You're constantly trying to understand why they do what they do, especially Allerton, who is a total mystery, super distant throughout the entire film, demanding that you draw your own conclusions, that you feel it more than having it all spelled out for you.

It feels very poetic, very "art-house" in that sense... that's why I completely understand if some people find it frustrating. I've read comments from people who were quite disappointed, who found it tedious or who just couldn't make any sense of it at all. One complaint I hear a lot is that the movie doesn't give you enough context, especially about Lee's past, which seems to be explained much better in the book. You know what I think: an adaptation has to stand on its own! You shouldn't have to read the book first to understand what the characters or the story are about... this lack of... like a narrative basis, to better understand Lee's story that could explain what he's doing, is probably the weakest point of the movie as an adaptation. I myself, to be honest, felt kind of lost at times, like I was trying to put the pieces together.

Y acá llegamos al estilo, mi gente, que es donde Queer creo que va a dividir aguas, no es una peli fácil, Guadagnino se arriesga con una onda visual bien interesante, a veces se siente casi como teatro.. te das cuenta que estás viendo algo armado, quizás hasta medio artificial, que parece que es a propósito y te ayuda a entender la onda de la peli más adelante. Arranca con un aire medio melancólico, romántico, quizás te recuerda un poquito a la vibra de Call Me By Your Name al principio, pero eso dura un suspiro, la peli se va poniendo cada vez más surreal, más experimental y, les soy sincero, bastante confusa, sobre todo en la recta final.. esta es una película que te pide estar ahí, metido.

Se apoya un montón en lo visual, en el subtexto, en lo que no se dice, sí, hay diálogos, pero mucho de lo importante está en cómo está filmado, en cómo los personajes se mueven uno cerca del otro, en las miradas que te dicen todo, en los silencios.. lo que hacen a veces es ambiguo, hasta te confunde. Estás todo el tiempo tratando de entender por qué hacen lo que hacen, sobre todo Allerton, que es un misterio total, súper lejano durante toda la película, te exige que saques tus conclusiones, que la sientas más que te la expliquen toda masticadita.

Se siente muy poética, muy de "cine de autor", en ese sentido.. por eso, entiendo perfecto si a algunos les parece frustrante, leí comentarios de gente que salió bastante decepcionada, que les pareció pesada o que de plano no le encontraron sentido.. una queja que se escucha mucho es que la peli no te da suficiente contexto, especialmente del pasado de Lee, que parece que en el libro te lo explican mucho mejor, ya saben lo que pienso yo: ¡una adaptación se tiene que sostener solita! No deberías tener que leerte el libro antes para entender de qué van los personajes o la historia.. esta falta de... como de base narrativa, para entender mejor la historia de Lee que podría explicar lo que hace, es probablemente el punto más flojo de la peli como adaptación, yo mismo, la verdad, a ratos me sentí medio perdido, como tratando de juntar las piezas.

But underneath all that complicated style and that semi-ambiguous vibe, the film is touching on some really powerful themes: the loneliness that crushes you, that vicious cycle of addiction, the way desire and longing can devour you, the search to connect with someone in a world (or maybe just in your own head) that feels super isolating... it's a queer love story, technically, yes, but it feels miles away from the typical films of the genre because of that surreal touch and the GIANT uncertainty that surrounds the main couple. You're not even sure if that "love" is healthy or if it's already doomed from the start, or maybe both, what's certain is that it doesn't go for the easy way, the sentimental way, that's not even a joke... and I have to quickly mention a couple of secondary characters! Jason Schwarzman appears in a small role but with a great vibe... he puts a strange energy into it that works.

And then there’s Leslie Manville, always so proper, so elegant… well, here she appears in the last section, I’m not lying to you, like some kind of half-crazy swamp boss, with a shotgun and everything! It was too funny and totally unexpected, a hilarious and bizarre cameo! The music, by Reznor and Ross, is also brutal, it perfectly captures the mood of the film: there’s a main theme that is beautiful but leaves you uneasy, which represents that central connection, but on top of that they add this psychedelic vibe, which goes around and around, sometimes sounds strange, and it fits perfectly with the visuals and how the characters feel inside… Guadagnino continues to throw in some tremendous musical moments: there’s one with New Order, another using Nirvana in the middle of the 50s!, which sounds kind of strange but somehow fits with the rebellious and transgressive spirit of the film, so would I recommend Queer?

It’s complicated. It's definitely not for everyone... if you're looking for the more easily digestible thrill of Challengers, this isn't it. This is for the "adventure film buffs," or so I feel. It's the kind of film that sticks with you, that leaves you thinking, that you'll probably want to comment on (or discuss) afterwards. It's challenging, dense, at times a bit dark, and some parts may test your patience. Overall, I think I'd give it a 7.5/10. It has its flaws, perhaps significant ones for some, but it's also fascinating, it's bold, and it has a performance by Daniel Craig that's absolutely worth watching. It's one of those films that, despite how difficult it may be, isn't a waste of time at all. It provokes something in you, and isn't that what makes art interesting? So yeah, if you're feeling adventurous and up for a challenge, you can give it a try. And well... that's it for today's review. Take care, bye!

Pero por debajo de todo ese estilo complicado y esa onda medio ambigua, la peli está tocando temas bien, bien potentes: la soledad que te aplasta, ese círculo vicioso de la adicción, la forma en que el deseo y las ganas te pueden devorar, la búsqueda de conectar con alguien en un mundo (o quizás solo en tu propia cabeza) que se siente súper aislado.. es una historia de amor queer, técnicamente, sí, pero se siente a kilómetros de las típicas pelis del género por ese toque surreal y la incertidumbre GIGANTE que rodea a la pareja principal. Ni siquiera estás seguro si ese "amor" es sano o si ya está condenado desde el principio, o quizás las dos cosas, lo que sí, es que no se va por lo fácil, por lo sentimentalón, eso ni de chiste.. y tengo que mencionar rapidito a un par de secundarios! Jason Schwarzman sale en un papel corto pero con una onda genial.. le mete una energía rara que funciona.

Y luego está Leslie Manville, siempre tan correcta, tan elegante ella.. bueno, acá aparece en el último tramo, no les miento, como una especie de jefa del pantano medio chiflada, ¡con escopeta y todo! Fue demasiado gracioso y totalmente inesperado, ¡un cameo divertidísimo y bizarro! La música, de Reznor y Ross, también está brutal, captura perfecto el mood de la película: hay un tema principal que es hermoso pero te deja intranquilo, que representa esa conexión central, pero encima le meten esta vibra psicodélica, que da vueltas, a veces suena rara, y le queda perfecto a lo visual y a cómo se sienten los personajes por dentro.. Guadagnino sigue metiendo unos momentazos musicales ¡tremendos!: hay uno con New Order, otro usando Nirvana ¡en plenos años 50!, que suena como raro pero de alguna forma encaja con el espíritu rebelde y transgresor de la peli, entonces, ¿recomendaría Queer? está complicado.

Definitivamente no es para todo el mundo.. si andan buscando la emoción más fácil de digerir de Challengers, esto no es, esto es para los "cinéfilos aventureros", o eso siento yo, es el tipo de película que se te queda pegada, que te deja pensando, que probablemente vas a querer comentar (o discutir) después.. es retadora, densa, a veces medio oscura, y algunas partes te pueden poner a prueba la paciencia. En general, creo que yo le doy un 7.5/10. Tiene sus fallas, quizás importantes para algunos, pero también es fascinante, es audaz y tiene una actuación de Daniel Craig que vale totalmente la pena ver, es una de esas películas que, a pesar de lo difícil que pueda ser, no es para nada una perdida de tiempo, te provoca algo, ¿y no es eso lo que hace interesante al arte? Así que sí, si se sienten aventureros y están listos para un desafío, pueden darle una oportunidad. Y bueno.. hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuídense mucho, byebye!
