Hello everyone, my friends who are fans of good stories, I hope you are doing great today, this time I want to share a new review, I finally got to see the first movie: Smile... and well, everyone was talking about it, friends who were telling me: "It's the horror surprise of the year, you have to see it now!", and others were like: "Mmmh, much ado about nothing", although they also recognized that it wasn't a total disaster either... a typical movie that divides opinions, one of those that you either love it or hate it, as they say. So, obviously, I got curious, and I'll be honest, I ended up feeling... a little bit of everything... I mean, the smile I had wasn't exactly one of happiness, it was more like a grimace of "what the hell did I just see?"

Well, the thing is, not to spoil too much, it's about a psychiatrist, Dr. Rose Carter... she's in her office, chilling, trying to help people, and suddenly a patient comes to her, a young girl, literally scared shitless, tells her that she's being stalked by a... thing, an entity that appears with these blood-curdling, super-grotesque smiles... and suddenly, bam!, the patient goes on a rampage right there in front of Rose, with that same creepy smile plastered across her face. From that point on, Rose starts experiencing some really weird, horrible things, she starts seeing those smiles everywhere: on people she knows, on strangers, even on dead people!

It's like a curse, a chain of trauma that's passed on when you see those horrible deaths, and now Rose is the one next... the poster, which I had seen a thousand times and to be honest, didn't make any difference to me, suddenly, boom!, made perfect sense. Now, you're probably thinking, "Oh, another horror movie about a curse that follows you," and yes, at first glance, it looks like that... it has a lot of elements that we already know from the genre. I found things from "The Ring," with that whole investigation and countdown vibe, and also from "It Follows," with that fear that doesn't let go, that chases you nonstop... it even has a bit of a Japanese horror feel to it, especially in the way they handle the sound. But "Smile" kind of tries to go a little further, and that's where, honestly, I liked it.

Hola a todos amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que hoy estén genial, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, por fin pude ver la primera película de: Smile.. y bueno, todo el mundo estuvo comentándola, amigos que me decían: "¡Es la sorpresa de terror del año, tienes que verla ya!", y otros más en plan: "Mmmh, mucho ruido y pocas nueces", aunque igual reconocían que tampoco era un desastre total.. típica película que divide opiniones, de esas que o te encanta o la odias, como dicen por ahí. Así que, obvio, me dio curiosidad, y les soy honesto, termine sintiendo... de todo un poco.. o sea, la sonrisa que tenía no era precisamente de felicidad, era más bien una mueca de "¿pero qué carajos acabo de ver?".

Bueno, la onda, para no spoilearles mucho, es que va de una psiquiatra, la Dra. Rose Carter.. ella está en su consulta, tranqui, tratando de ayudar a la gente, y de repente le llega una paciente, una chica joven, cagada de miedo, literal, le cuenta que la está acosando una... cosa, una entidad que se aparece con unas sonrisas que te hielan la sangre, súper grotescas.. y de golpe, ¡zas!, la paciente se manda una locura tremenda ahí mismo, delante de Rose, con esa misma sonrisa espeluznante plantada en la cara. A partir de ahí, Rose empieza a vivir unas cosas rarísimas, horribles, empieza a ver esas sonrisas por todos lados: en gente que conoce, en desconocidos, ¡hasta en muertos!

Es como una maldición, una cadena de trauma que se pasa cuando ves esas muertes horribles, y ahora Rose es la que sigue.. el póster, que lo había visto mil veces y la verdad no me decía ni fu ni fa, de repente ¡pum!, cobró todo el sentido del mundo. Ahora, seguro están pensando: "Dale, otra película de terror de una maldición que te sigue", y sí, a primera vista, tiene toda esa pinta.. tiene muchos elementos que ya conocemos del género, le encontré cositas de "El Aro", con toda esa onda de investigar y la cuenta regresiva, y también de "It Follows", con ese miedo que no te suelta, que te persigue sin parar.. hasta tiene un airecito a terror japonés, sobre todo en cómo manejan el sonido. Pero "Smile" como que intenta ir un poquito más allá, y ahí es donde, la verdad, me gustó.

Here it's very clear that the thing is not just about a monster that scares you... it's an allegory about trauma and mental health, think about it for a moment: Rose already had her own mess from the past - we find out that she saw her mother commit suicide when she was a girl, which is something very strong and obvious, which is why she became a psychiatrist... the movie really shows you what it's like to carry that backpack, that weight that you can't see, and then wanting to play dumb and put on a "smile" as if nothing happened, ends up eating you up from the inside. It's as if that fake happiness, that denial, was creating that "monster" inside you that kills your head, the part that pissed me off the most, not so much the scares, but seeing how Rose went to hell, how her own head became her worst enemy. It hits that emotional nerve, that real fear of losing your mind, of not being able to trust even your own thoughts... the film also hits hard at the issue of the stigma surrounding mental illness, how people instantly dismiss things they don't understand or things that freak them out, and speaking of scares, there are so many.

And this is where people kind of split in two... some friends told me they worked for them, until finally a film used jump scares with "cool", or whatever the word is in horror! They felt they really hit... for me personally, and I've heard others say the same, a lot of them seemed kind of predictable, you know how it is: the music drops suddenly, the camera stays still for a second too long, and you're already waiting for the BOO! Definitely, some of them made me tense and uncomfortable, and yes, after a while, I ended up kind of fed up with the screen screaming in my face, let's say... I was looking away several times, preparing for the blow.

But, I have to admit, even if you see them coming, some of them still hit you hard because of what they show you. The director, Parker Finn—I think it's his first feature-length film, although it seems he made a short with a similar idea—definitely has a clear idea of ​​how to generate tension. The way it's filmed and edited adds to the anxiety... many times, when the characters speak, they're not in the same frame... they cut to one, then to the other, and you're there thinking that the next face that appears is going to have that hideous smile. It has you there, with your hair standing on end... the sound design, that's another thing that's getting all the applause, and rightly so. It's crazy how well it generates that "what a bad vibe" feeling. The music, the effects... they get into your pores and create an atmosphere that suffocates you... there are also moments of gore and quite powerful brutality; they don't pull any punches when showing you things that are designed to, well, leave you affected. These are images you don't want to see, and they're meant to leave a mark on you, to make you feel the madness Rose is experiencing.

Acá está clarísimo que la cosa no va solo de un monstruo que te asusta.. es una alegoría sobre el trauma y la salud mental, piénsenlo un toque: Rose ya venía con su propio quilombo del pasado –nos enteramos que vio cómo se suicidaba su mamá cuando era chica, que es algo fuertísimo y obvio, que por eso se metió a psiquiatra.. la peli te muestra posta cómo es cargar con esa mochila, ese peso que no se ve, y después querer hacerte el boludo y poner una "sonrisa" como si nada, te termina comiendo por dentro. Es como si esa felicidad de mentira, esa negación, fuera creando ese "monstruo" adentro tuyo que te liquida la cabeza, la parte que más me jodió, no tanto los sustos, sino ver cómo Rose se iba al carajo, cómo su propia cabeza se volvía su peor enemiga. Te toca esa fibra emocional, ese miedo real de perder la cabeza, de no poder confiar ni en lo que piensas.. la peli también le da duro al tema del estigma con las enfermedades mentales, cómo la gente al toque descarta lo que no entiende o lo que le da cosa, y hablando de sustos, hay un MONTÓN.

Y acá es donde la gente como que se parte al medio.. algunos amigos me dijeron que les funcionaron, ¡hasta que por fin una peli usaba los jump scares con "onda", o qué sé yo cómo se dice eso en terror! Sintieron que de verdad pegaban.. a mí, personalmente, y escuché a otros decir lo mismo, muchos me parecieron medio predecibles, viste cómo es: la música baja de golpe, la cámara se queda quieta un segundo de más, y ya estás esperando el ¡BU! Definitivamente, algunos me pusieron tenso e incómodo, y sí, después de un rato, terminé medio podrido de que la pantalla me gritara en la cara, digamos.. estuve varias veces mirando para otro lado, preparándome para el golpe.

Pero, tengo que reconocerlo, aunque te los veas venir, algunos te siguen pegando fuerte por lo que te muestran. El director, Parker Finn –creo que es su primera peli larga, aunque parece que hizo un corto con una idea parecida– definitivamente la tiene clarísima para generar tensión, cómo está filmada y editada te suma a la ansiedad.. muchas veces, cuando los personajes hablan, no están en el mismo cuadro.. te cortan a uno, después al otro, y estás ahí pensando que la próxima cara que aparezca va a tener esa sonrisa espantosa. Te tiene ahí, con los pelos de punta.. el diseño de sonido, eso es otra cosa que se está llevando todos los aplausos, y con justa razón. Es una locura lo bien que te genera esa cosa de "qué mala vibra". La música, los efectos... se te meten por los poros y te crean una atmósfera que te ahoga.. también hay momentos de gore y de una brutalidad bastante power, no se andan con chiquitas para mostrarte cosas que están pensadas para, bueno, dejarte tocado. Son imágenes que no quieres ver, y están hechas para dejarte una marca, para que sientas la locura que está viviendo Rose.

Well, and the actress who plays Rose, Sosie Bacon, really carries the film on her shoulders... I thought she really rocked it... you feel her desperation, her fear, her anger when no one pays attention to her... there were times when she reminded me a bit of Toni Collette in "Hereditary" - I'm not comparing the films, mind you, but that descent into madness and raw terror. Still, I know that it didn't quite click for some people, like the role was a bit too big for her, or they didn't get that hooked or care about Rose, even with all her past dealings... for me, it worked, but I understand that her constant state of panic could tire some people.

The rest of the cast... and, they're there, the ex-boyfriend, Joel, the truth is that he ends up being more useful and getting more involved than the current boyfriend, who kind of disappears and ends up looking like a fool, I'll be honest... in fact, if Joel weren't a detective, bye bye movie, because Rose wouldn't have the hell to investigate the curse... the movie is also a little long, eh. I remember looking at the clock halfway through the end, and yes, I felt like they could have cut about 20 minutes, the final part, especially, can get a bit heavy after everything that happens to Rose... it seems a bit like it goes a bit towards the side of classic horror clichés, which, depending on your mood, either comforts you or disappoints you a little... at first, the ending left me kind of... I don't know. It felt like it was going to happen no matter what, you see? But after chewing on the topic a bit, I actually ended up liking how it ends, even though it's a total downer... it fits with the overall tone of the film.

Something interesting is how the film ultimately goes all in on supernatural horror, with a very real and very messed-up creature... for a while, you get the idea that maybe it's all in Rose's head, a mental breakdown due to her trauma, although there's still that underlying mental health thing, which kind of takes away a bit of the power from that deeper exploration by choosing the monster alone. It's not bad, mind you—it's still a horror film that works and scares you—but I was so taken with the psychological horror part that I almost wanted it to stay more ambiguous.

Bueno, y la actriz que hace de Rose, Sosie Bacon la verdad es que se carga la película al hombro.. a mí me pareció que la rompió.. sentís su desesperación, su cagazo, su bronca cuando nadie le pone atención.. hubo ratos que me hizo acordar un poco a Toni Collette en "Hereditary" –no estoy comparando las pelis, eh, sino esa bajada a la locura y al terror bien cruda–. Igual, sé que a algunos no les cerró del todo, como que el papel le quedó un poco grande, o no llegaron a engancharse o preocuparse tanto por Rose, ni siquiera con todo su mambo del pasado.. para mí, funcionó, pero entiendo que su estado de pánico constante pueda cansar a algunos.

El resto del elenco... y, están ahí, el exnovio, Joel, la verdad es que termina siendo más útil y metiéndose más que el novio actual, que medio que desaparece y queda como un nabo, les soy sincero.. es más, si Joel no fuera detective, chau peli, porque Rose no tendría como carajo investigar la maldición.. la película también es un poquito larga, eh. Me acuerdo que miré el reloj medio al final, y sí, sentí que le podrían haber cortado unos 20 minutitos, la parte final, sobre todo, se te puede hacer medio pesada después de todo lo que le pasa a Rose.. como que se va un poco para el lado de los clichés clásicos del terror, lo cual, depende cómo estés de ánimo, o te reconforta o te decepciona un poco.. al principio, el final me dejó medio... qué sé yo. Se sentía como que iba a pasar sí o sí, ¿vieron? Pero después de masticarlo un poco, la verdad que me terminó gustando lo cosa en el que termina, aunque sea un bajonazo total.. pega con el tono general de la peli

Algo interesante es cómo al final la película se la juega de lleno por el terror sobrenatural, con un bicho bien real y bien jodido.. durante un rato, te tira la onda de que capaz está todo en la cabeza de Rose, un colapso mental por su trauma, aunque sigue teniendo esa cosa de fondo sobre la salud mental, como que le quita un poco de fuerza a esa exploración más profunda al elegir el monstruo a secas. Que no está mal, ojo –sigue siendo una peli de terror que funciona y te asusta– pero a mí me había copado tanto la parte del terror psicológico que casi quería que se quedara más en esa onda ambigua.

But people, beyond any little thing I might find, "Smile" left me uncomfortable... like I said, it's one of those movies that gets stuck in your head, and for a while afterward, I was kind of scared shitless—not necessarily from a grinning demon, but more from how fragile the mind is, how easily everything can rot. And that, for me, is the key to a horror that works... it wasn't just the scares; it was that feeling of fear that won't go away and the nagging questions it leaves you asking about trauma and how we deal with it (or don't).

So, what's my verdict? And... it's complicated, it has its flaws, obviously... it uses a lot of tricks we've seen a thousand times, and the pacing could be a little tighter, but it's also undeniable that it scares you, it has an incredible atmosphere and it deals with difficult subjects in a way that disturbs you and leaves you thinking... for me, the psychological horror part and how Sosie Bacon acted lifted it a lot... it's not perfect, but you remember it and it leaves you with a strange feeling... I think I'd give "Smile" a 7.5/10, it's not going to be for everyone, and I completely understand why it's so divided. If you're already tired of jump scares or you're looking for something super original, maybe this one isn't for you... but if you want a horror movie that gives you the creeps for real, that makes you feel uncomfortable and keeps you thinking after the credits roll, then watch "Smile". Of course... don't watch it alone or in the dark if creepy smiles scare you easily... no way, then tell me what you thought if you see it... Pero gente, más allá de cualquier cosita que le pueda encontrar, "Smile" me dejó incómodo.. como les dije, es de esas pelis que se te meten en la cabeza y, por un rato después, anduve medio cagado –no necesariamente de un demonio sonriente, sino más bien de lo frágil que es la mente, de lo fácil que se puede pudrir todo–. Y eso, para mí, es la posta de un terror que funciona.. no fueron solo los sustos; fue esa sensación de miedo que no se te va y las preguntas jodidas que te deja picando sobre el trauma y cómo le hacemos frente (o no le hacemos).

Así que, ¿cuál es mi veredicto? Y... es complicado, tiene sus fallas, obvio.. usa muchos trucos que ya vimos mil veces, y el ritmo podría estar más ajustadito, pero también es innegable que te asusta, tiene una atmósfera increíble y se mete con temas jodidos de una forma que te perturba y te deja pensando.. para mí, la parte del terror psicológico y cómo actuó Sosie Bacon la levantaron un montón.. no es perfecta, pero te la acuerdas y te deja una sensación rara.. yo creo que a "Smile" le pongo un 7.5/10, no va a ser para todos, y entiendo perfecto por qué divide tanto las aguas. Si ya estás cansado de los jump scares o buscas algo mega original, capaz esta no te va.. pero si quieres una peli de terror que te dé mal rollo en serio, que te haga sentir incómodo y se te quede dando vueltas después de que terminen los créditos, entonces mira "Smile". Eso sí... no la veas solo y a oscuras si te asustan fácil las sonrisas creepy.. ni hablar, después me cuentan qué les pareció si la ven.. pronto les haré reseña de al secuela.. y bueno, hasta aquí todo por hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense mucho!
