If you decide to watch it, you have to go in completely, one hundred percent, blind. I'm serious, don't watch the trailer... don't read the two-line synopsis on whatever streaming platform you find it on.

Don't look up reviews or comments... the best possible way to experience this film is to arrive without the faintest idea of anything. I hope my sheer excitement is enough to convince you, because the experience is so much more powerful when you let the movie take you on its own path. It's quite a journey, and discovering it for yourself is half the magic. So, what can I tell you without spoiling the surprise? Let's start with the basics. Some people say it's a horror movie, and I've seen it in that category, but honestly, I don't feel that's the most accurate description.

Don't go in expecting jump scares or a film whose sole purpose is to scare you to death, not at all. It is, at its heart, a thriller with an incredible edge. It's a super tense, super gripping cat-and-mouse game that gets quite violent at times. It's the kind of movie that gets under your skin with pure suspense and psychological tension, rather than with cheap scares. If you're a bit sensitive, there are a couple of moments with fairly graphic practical effects that might make you wince, but it's all in service of the story; it's not shock for shock's sake.

Es una de esas joyitas escondidas, una peli que simplemente aparece de la nada.. ese hallazgo increíble e inesperado que te deja con una sonrisa gigante y genuina en la cara.. Esa película es Strange Darling, y es una auténtica joya. Ahora, antes de decirles cualquier otra cosa —y pónganme atención porque esto es lo más importante que les voy a decir—, necesito que me prometan algo, si deciden verla, tienen que entrar a verla completamente, pero al cien por ciento, a ciegas.. se los digo en serio, no vean el tráiler.. no lean la sinopsis de dos líneas en la plataforma de streaming donde la encuentren.

No busquen reseñas ni comentarios.. la mejor manera posible de vivir esta película es llegar sin tener ni la más remota idea de nada.. espero que mi pura emoción sea suficiente para convencerlos, porque la experiencia es muchísimo más potente cuando dejas que la peli te lleve por su propio camino. Es todo un viaje, y descubrirlo por tu cuenta es la mitad de la magia, entonces, ¿qué les puedo contar sin arruinarles la sorpresa? Arranquemos por lo básico.. hay gente que dice que es una película de terror, y la he visto en esa categoría, pero la verdad es que no siento que sea lo más preciso, no vayan esperando los sustos de la nada o una película que su único objetivo sea dejarlos muertos de miedo, para nada.. es, en su corazón, un thriller con un filo increíble.

Es un juego del gato y el ratón súper tenso, súper atrapante, que a ratos se pone bastante violento.. es el tipo de película que se te mete bajo la piel con el puro suspenso y la tensión psicológica, más que con sustos baratos, si son un poco sensibles, sí hay un par de momentos con efectos prácticos bastante gráficos que quizás los hagan arrugar la cara, pero todo está al servicio de la historia, no es para impactar por impactar y ya.

But what truly makes Strange Darling brilliant, what elevates it from being a good thriller to something incredible, is its structure. The director, JT Molner, made a very specific and, frankly, very clever decision: the story is told in six chapters, but they are thrown at you in a completely jumbled order. I mean, when the movie starts, you will be totally lost. I'm talking about a "what the hell am I watching?" level of confusion. You'll ask yourself a million questions, trying to figure out who these people are and what on earth is happening. But trust me, that's precisely the point. Hang in there, be patient... because once the film starts showing its cards and you begin to connect the dots, all that initial confusion transforms into a spectacular "Aaaah, so that's what this was about!" feeling.

It's like being given all the pieces of a puzzle mixed up and, little by little, piece by piece, you start to see the full picture, and it's stunning. The best comparison I can think of is a film like Memento. This is a movie where the order in which things are shown changes everything. If this story were told in chronological order, from beginning to end, it would still be interesting, yes, but it wouldn't hit half as hard, I assure you. Molner uses our ignorance as his greatest weapon. He plays with the information he gives us, constantly subverting what you think is going to happen and keeping you completely glued to the screen.

It's a masterful exercise in storytelling that makes you feel like part of the investigation, as if you were solving the mystery yourself. But of course, a clever structure alone can't save a film. You need actors, and the performances here are the heart of it all; they're the reason this works so, so well. We have Willa Fitzgerald as "The Lady," and her performance is, simply put, insane. It's an impressive role that establishes her as a total star. The range of emotions and everything she does with the character leaves you breathless. She has to be cunning, terrified, hurt, sarcastic, and imposing, sometimes all within a matter of minutes. You can't believe a word she says, yet she communicates so much without speaking, just with a look or a slight change in her tone of voice. It's one of the best performances of last year, in my opinion.

Pero lo que de verdad hace que Strange Darling sea una genialidad, lo que la saca de ser un buen thriller y la convierte en algo increíble, es su estructura.. el director, JT Molner, tomó una decisión súper específica y, la verdad, muy inteligente, la historia te la cuentan en seis capítulos, pero te los tiran completamente desordenados.. o sea, cuando la película empieza, van a estar totalmente perdidos.. me refiero a un nivel de confusión de "¿pero qué carajos estoy viendo?". Se van a hacer un millón de preguntas, tratando de entender quién es esta gente y qué diablos está pasando, pero créanme, esa es justo la idea. Aguanten, tengan paciencia.. porque una vez que la película empieza a mostrar sus cartas y uno comienza a atar cabos, toda esa confusión del principio se convierte en una sensación de “¡Aaaah, con que de esto se trataba!” que es espectacular, es como si te dieran las piezas de un rompecabezas todas revueltas y, de a poquito, pieza por pieza, empiezas a ver la imagen completa y es impresionante.

La mejor comparación que se me ocurre es con una película como Memento.. esta es una peli donde el orden en que te muestran las cosas cambia todo, si esta historia te la contaran en orden, del principio al fin, seguiría siendo interesante, sí, pero no pegaría ni la mitad de fuerte, se los aseguro. Molner usa el hecho de que no sabemos nada como si fuera su mejor arma.. juega con la información que nos da, le da la vuelta a lo que crees que va a pasar a cada rato y te mantiene completamente pegado a la pantalla.

Es un ejercicio de narración magistral que te hace sentir parte de la investigación, como si tú mismo estuvieras resolviendo el misterio.. pero claro, una estructura inteligente por sí sola no te salva una película. Necesitas actores, y las actuaciones aquí son el corazón de todo, son la razón por la que esto funciona tan, pero tan bien. Tenemos a Willa Fitzgerald como "La Dama", y su actuación es, sencillamente, una locura.. es un papel impresionante que la consagra como una estrella tota, el rango de emociones y todo lo que hace con el personaje te deja sin aire.. tiene que ser astuta, estar aterrada, herida, ser sarcástica e imponente, y a veces todo eso en cuestión de minutos. No puedes creerle nada de lo que dice, y te comunica un montón de cosas sin hablar, solo con una mirada o un pequeño cambio en su tono de voz, es una de las mejores actuaciones del año pasado, en mi opinión.

And opposite her is Kyle Gallner as "The Demon." Look, I've been a fan of Kyle Gallner for a while now. He's one of those actors who, whenever he appears in something, you know he's going to be good, from indie horror films to supporting roles in things like Smile. But this... this is the best thing he has ever done. By far. He brings an intensity and complexity to this role that I had never seen from him before. Yes, he's scary, he's menacing, but there's so much more going on underneath. Together, he and Willa Fitzgerald completely own the screen. For a film that relies so heavily on its two protagonists, they don't just carry the movie on their shoulders; they make it soar. And you know what the craziest part is?

This movie looks spectacular, something you wouldn't expect from a low-budget indie thriller. It had a budget of about 4 million dollars, which is nothing in Hollywood, it's pocket change. But they squeezed every last cent out of it. The cinematography is incredible; the work here is insane. It gives the film a brutal style, with amazing framing and a use of color that isn't just there for show. Pay close attention to the color red; it's everywhere—in the lighting, in the clothing—and it's used to evoke emotions and add more layers of meaning to the story. It's a visual feast that is both beautiful and super intentional. Speaking of which, this is a film you have to listen to as much as you watch.

So, perk up your ears. It turns out the director, JT Molner, also composed the music, and it really shows. The music is super important. The soundtrack is filled with songs whose lyrics are literally telling you what's happening in the plot, adding another layer to the story. The main song, a cover of "Love Hurts," isn't just a cool track they threw in; its lyrics are a direct commentary on the film's themes, turning the whole thing into a very dark morality tale. My only "issue" is that when I watched it, the song lyrics weren't subtitled, and for me, that's a mistake, because they add a ton of value to what you're being told.

Y enfrente de ella está Kyle Gallner como "El Demonio".. miren, yo soy fan de Kyle Gallner desde hace un buen rato, es de esos actores que siempre que aparecen en algo, sabes que van a estar bien, desde pelis de terror independientes hasta papeles secundarios en cosas como Smile.. pero esto… esto es lo mejor que ha hecho en su vida. Por mucho, le mete una intensidad y una complejidad a este papel que nunca antes le había visto.. sí, da miedo, es amenazante, pero hay muchísimo más pasando por debajo, juntos, él y Willa Fitzgerald se comen la pantalla por completo.. para una película que depende tanto de sus dos protagonistas, no es que solo se echen la película al hombro, es que la hacen volar.. saben qué es lo más loco de todo?

Que esta película se ve espectacular, algo que uno no se esperaría de un thriller independiente de bajo presupuesto.. tuvo un presupuesto de como 4 millones de dólares, que para Hollywood no es nada, es un vuelto, pero le sacaron el jugo a cada centavo.. la fotografía es increíble, es un trabajo aquí es una locura.. le da a la película un estilo brutal, con unos encuadres increíbles y un uso del color que no está ahí porque sí. Pónganle mucha atención al color rojo, está por todos lados —en la iluminación, en la ropa— y lo usan para provocar emociones y darle más capas de significado a la historia. Es un manjar visual que es hermoso y al mismo tiempo súper intencional.. hablando de eso, esta es una película que hay que escuchar tanto como ver.

Así que paren la oreja, resulta que el director, JT Molner, también es el que compuso la música, y se nota un montón.. la música es súper importante. El soundtrack está lleno de canciones que la letra, literal, te está contando lo que pasa en la trama, añadiéndole otra capa más a la historia, la canción principal, una versión de "Love Hurts", no es solo una canción cool que pusieron ahí; la letra es un comentario directo sobre los temas de la película, convirtiendo todo en una especie de cuento de moraleja bien oscuro. Mi único "pero", es que cuando la vi, las letras de las canciones no tenían subtítulos, y para mí eso es un error, porque le suman un montón de valor a lo que te están contando.

Beneath all the action and style, Strange Darling delves into super deep and complicated ideas about relationships, identity, and love. It's about the games and roles we all play, not just to survive, but to feel alive. The characters don't even have names; they're like concepts, "The Lady" and "The Demon," and their roles are constantly shifting, creating an incredible vibe of not knowing who the villain is and who the victim is. The film isn't so much about what's said outright, but about everything happening underneath: the manipulation, the unspoken desires, the chaotic and inexplicable nature of attraction. It suggests that love, or at least that initial spark, is something that simply can't be explained or manufactured.

It's a mess and often born from nothing, from chaos, existing in those gray areas we almost always try to ignore. Now, I have to be honest with you about something. Since much of its power comes from the unique experience of discovering everything and untangling the timeline, I'm not sure it's a movie to be watched many times, at least not in the same way. The magic of that first viewing, that shock and surprise when the pieces start to fit together, is something that only happens once. Watching it again is interesting for catching the clues you missed, but it will never hit you with the same force. But please, don't let that discourage you. That first experience is so incredibly good, so satisfying, and so memorable, that it's worth every second. So, I am absolutely fascinated by this film.

It's a tremendous display of intelligent, to-the-point, and hard-hitting cinema. It's a film that trusts its audience to be smart, that respects the thriller genre while pushing it into new territory. It has a ton of personality, a lot of style, and is anchored by two performances that are easily the best of both actors' careers. For me, it's a solid 8.5/10. It's not perfect, it's not a flawless masterpiece—the script could have perhaps been polished a bit more in some parts—but for what it achieves with its budget and for the sheer audacity of its idea, it's a gem. It's one of those small films that teaches you a lesson about what can be accomplished with a great idea and a passionate team. Debajo de toda la acción y el estilazo que tiene, Strange Darling se mete con ideas súper profundas y complicadas sobre las relaciones, la identidad y el amor.. es sobre los juegos y los papeles que todos actuamos, no solo para sobrevivir, sino para sentirnos vivos, los personajes ni siquiera tienen nombres, son como ideas, "La Dama" y "El Demonio", y sus roles van cambiando todo el tiempo, creando una onda increíble de no saber bien quién es el malo y quién es la víctima. La película no es tanto sobre lo que se dice de frente, sino sobre todo lo que pasa por debajo: la manipulación, los deseos que no se hablan, lo caótico y lo inexplicable que es la atracción, te plantea que el amor, o por lo menos esa chispa del principio, es algo que simplemente no se puede explicar ni fabricar.

Es un desastre y muchas veces nace de la nada, del caos, existiendo en esas zonas grises que casi siempre tratamos de ignorar.. ahora, les tengo que ser sincero con algo. Como gran parte de su poder viene de la experiencia única de ir descubriendo todo y desenredando la línea de tiempo, no estoy seguro de que sea una película para verla muchas veces, por lo menos no de la misma manera.. la magia de esa primera vez, ese shock y esa sorpresa de cuando las piezas empiezan a encajar, es algo que solo pasa una vez, verla de nuevo es interesante para cachar las pistas que te perdiste, pero nunca te va a pegar con la misma fuerza. Pero, por favor, no dejen que eso los desanime.. esa primera experiencia es tan increíblemente buena, tan satisfactoria y tan memorable, que vale toda la pena del mundo, así que, estoy absolutamente fascinado con esta película.

Es una demostración tremenda de cine inteligente, que va al grano y te pega fuerte.. es una película que confía en que su público es inteligente, que respeta el género del thriller pero al mismo tiempo lo empuja a nuevos lugares, tiene muchísima personalidad, mucho estilo y está sostenida por dos actuaciones que son, fácil, las mejores de la carrera de ambos. Para mí, es un sólido 8.5/10. No es perfecta, no es una obra sin fallas —el guion quizás se pudo pulir un poquito más en algunas partes—, pero por lo que logra con el presupuesto que tenía y por la pura audacia de su idea, es una joya.. es una de esas pelis chiquitas que te da una lección de lo que se puede lograr con una gran idea y un equipo apasionado.. es una película para la gente a la que le encanta que la desafíen, que la sorprendan y que la dejen completamente atrapada.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuidense!
