Hello everyone, fellow fans of good cinema, lovers of more movies, I hope you are all doing super well, this time I come to bring you another real one, after putting it off for quite some time, and with my thermos of coffee full, I decided to watch: The Brutalist... I finally got to see that movie that had a ton of Oscar nominations... and yes, I was so excited! Adrian Brody playing this super visionary architect, Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian refugee who tries to rebuild his life and leave his mark in the United States after the war? It sounded epic... the truth is, with so much hype, I always try to lower my expectations by two notches, you know how it is today, everything is the "new masterpiece" and half the time it is... meh, just passable.

People love to “put a lot of cream on their tacos,” as I read somewhere (I loved that phrase!).. so I went in calmly, ready for anything, let me tell you, prepare myself for three and a half hours – yes, you heard right!, three and a half hours!, and wow! Simply… I know I read a review somewhere that said that they almost fell asleep, that the story was a “brick” that sent you to sleep… well, I understand where they’re going if you expect pure non-stop action, but for me… nothing to do with it, maybe lowering my expectations helped, it totally won me over… I was totally hooked! First, let’s talk about the technical side, because holy God!, this movie is a work of art! In that, it’s an experience for all the senses…

You have to see it on the biggest screen you can find, the director, Brady Corbet, and his cinematographer, Lol Crawley (who deserves all the awards!), shot this in the old VistaVision format – that super wide, epic, 50s look – and then they cut it to 70mm… every frame is a painting you could hang! It’s striking, awe-inspiring, at times mind-blowing, it’s spectacular, the way they use architecture and locations to show what the characters are feeling… it leaves you speechless! And the music… Daniel Blumberg’s score is incredible! – sometimes there’s almost no music, minimalist, and other times it swells with raw, almost brutal emotion, which suits it perfectly! Visually, it gets inside you... the editing, the montage by David Janso, equally precise, often cutting to the rhythm of the music, making everything feel so deliberate!, so well done, like a craftsman!

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos del buen cine, amantes de más películas, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión les vengo a traer otra reales, luego de estarlo postergando por bastante tiempo, y con mi termo de café lleno, decidí ver: The Brutalist.. por fin pude ver esa película que tuvo un montón de nominaciones al Óscar.. y sí, yo estaba ¡emocionadísimo! ¿Adrian Brody haciendo de este arquitecto súper visionario, Laszlo Toth, un refugiado húngaro que intenta rehacer su vida y dejar su marca en Estados Unidos después de la guerra? Sonaba épico.. la verdad, con tanto hype, yo siempre trato de bajarle dos rayitas a mis expectativas, ha saben cómo es hoy, todo es la "nueva obra maestra" y la mitad de las veces es... meh, pasable nomás.

A la gente le encanta "echarle mucha crema a sus tacos", como leí por ahí (¡me encantó esa frase!).. así que entré tranquilo, listo para lo que fuera, déjenme decirles, prepararme para tres horas y media – ¡sí, escucharon bien!, ¡tres horas y media!, Y ¡wow! Simplemente... yo sé que leí por ahí una crítica que decía que casi se duermen, que la historia era un "ladrillo" que te mandaba a dormir.. bueno, entiendo por dónde van si esperas pura acción sin parar, pero para mí... nada que ver, capaz que bajarle a las expectativas, ayudó, totalmente me terminó de convencer.. yo quedé ¡totalmente atrapado! Primero, hablemos de lo técnico, porque ¡Dios santo!, esta película es una ¡obra de arte! en eso, es una experiencia para todos los sentidos..

Tienen que verla en la pantalla más grande que encuentren, el director, Brady Corbet, y su director de foto, Lol Crawley (¡que se merece todos los premios!), filmaron esto en el formato viejo VistaVision – ese look súper amplio, épico, de los 50 – y después lo pasaron a 70mm.. cada imagen es un cuadro que podrías colgar! Es impactante, imponente, a veces te vuela la cabeza, es espectacular, la forma en que usan la arquitectura y los lugares para mostrar lo que sienten los personajes.. te deja sin palabras! Y la música.. la banda sonora de Daniel Blumberg es ¡increíble! – a veces casi no hay, minimalista, y otras veces crece con una emoción ¡cruda!, casi brutal, que le queda ¡perfecto! a lo visual, se te mete adentro.. la edición, el montaje de David Janso, igual de preciso, cortando muchas veces al ritmo de la música, haciendo que todo se sienta ¡tan a propósito!, tan bien hecho, ¡como de artesano!

And it seems like they made this visual marvel with only ten million, people! You start to think about those giant 200 million movies that all look the same, kind of boring, and you say, 'Where does all that money go?!' Right? Seriously, someone should send the AFIP (Financial Assistance Tax) to the Hollywood studios, man! If this guy, Corbet, can make this beauty with that kind of money, clearly someone is screwing us... it's a giant achievement for an independent film! Now, Adrian Brody... the guy is phenomenal! As Laszlo, easily, one of the performances that most moves you of his entire career... the weight he carries, the story he has in his eyes!

You see the pain of being a genius that no one understands, the guilt of having survived, that quiet strength... all with his gaze alone, with the wrinkles on his face, he doesn't need to say much; it's all there, subtle, but incredibly powerful! Yes, it might remind you a little of The Pianist – that depressing vibe – but here it feels deeper, more seasoned… they say I spent months working on the Hungarian accent, just like Felicity Jones who plays his wife, Erzsébet, and it feels super natural! (in the original version, of course!) On top of that, the rest of the cast is awesome! Guy Pearce as Harrison Van Buren, the rich guy who gives Laszlo his big opportunity… he’s a super complex character – powerful, insecure, like he’s hiding a void inside, one of the best I’ve seen him play, and look, Memento is one of my favorite movies ever, eh!

And Felicity Jones is incredibly good! as Erzsébet… The story itself… ugh!, it’s huge!, it spans decades… it goes way beyond just building buildings, eh? It deals with artistic creation, with what it means to be an immigrant, with the exploitation that often lies behind success, the enormous personal sacrifices that people make, and the whole complicated, sometimes somewhat false, vibe of the American Dream... It talks about the shadow of the Holocaust without showing you the horrible things directly, but rather focusing on the wounds left in the heads of those who survived. It touches on capitalism, corruption, that feeling of being lost, alone, even when it seems like everything is going well.

Y parece que hicieron esta maravilla visual con solo diez millones, gente! ¡Te pones a pensar en esas pelis gigantes de 200 millones que se ven todas iguales, medio sin gracia, y decís ¿a dónde se va toda esa plata?!', ¿no? En serio, que alguien les mande la AFIP a los estudios de Hollywood, loco! Si este tipo, Corbet, puede hacer esta belleza con esa plata, claramente alguien nos está jodiendo.. es un logro gigante para una peli independiente! Ahora, Adrian Brody.. el tipo está ¡fenomenal! como Laszlo, fácil, una de las actuaciones que más te llegan de toda su carrera.. el peso que lleva encima, la historia que tiene en la mirada!

Le ves el dolor de ser un genio que nadie entiende, la culpa por haber sobrevivido, esa fuerza callada... todo con la mirada nomás, con las arrugas de la cara, no necesita hablar mucho; está todo ahí, sutil, pero ¡potentísimo! Sí, capaz te recuerda un poco a El Pianista – esa onda deprimente – pero acá se siente más profundo, como más curtido por la vida.. dicen que trabajo meses con el acento húngaro, igual que Felicity Jones que hace de su esposa, Erzsébet, ¡y se siente súper natural! (¡en la versión original, claro!).. encima, ¡el resto del elenco es brutal! Guy Pearce como Harrison Van Buren, el ricachón que le da la gran una oportunidad a Laszlo.. es un personaje súper complejo – poderoso, inseguro, como que esconde un vacío adentro, de lo mejor que le he visto hacer, ¡y miren que Memento es una de mis pelis favoritas de la vida, eh!

Y Felicity Jones está ¡increíblemente bien! como Erzsébet.. La historia en sí... ¡uff!, es ¡gigante!, abarca décadas.. va mucho más allá de solo construir edificios, ¿eh? se mete con la creación artística, con lo que es ser inmigrante, con la explotación que muchas veces hay detrás del éxito, los sacrificios personales ¡enormes! que hace la gente, y toda esa onda complicada, medio falsa a veces, del Sueño Americano.. habla de la sombra del Holocausto sin mostrarte las cosas horribles, directo, sino enfocándose en las heridas que quedan en la cabeza de los que sobrevivieron, toca el capitalismo, la corrupción, esa sensación de estar perdido, solo, aunque parezca que todo va bien.

There's an image at the beginning: the Statue of Liberty, upside down! It's a powerful symbol! For the entire film: that promise of freedom, of welcome... upside down! For Laszlo, and perhaps for many immigrants, is the United States truly freedom, or just another kind of cage? As his wife says in a letter, quoting Goethe, something like, 'No one is more enslaved than he who believes himself free without being so'... they throw that idea at you all the time. The architecture itself—the Brutalism of the title—isn't just what Laszlo does; it's embedded up to its neck in the film! If you don't quite get it, Brutalism is that style from after World War II: think of those giant buildings made of pure concrete, functional, without much adornment. It came about because they needed to rebuild quickly and cheaply, but many people see it as cold, intimidating, you know?

In the film, this style is reflected... exactly! of how Laszlo is inside, he is heavy, full of wounds, perhaps beautiful in his own tough way, that does not bend... it is as if he were throwing all his trauma, all his complicated soul... there, in the cement! The buildings feel like part of his head: they intimidate you, perhaps they let you see a little light, of hope through some small cracks, but in the end they are hard, isolated... Now, the story... this is where I think the film can divide the waters, and from there come those comments that he is a 'brick'... it is slow, on purpose... it does not rush, it lets the scenes breathe, sometimes to the point of making you uncomfortable. The first two hours put everything together carefully, showing you Laszlo's problems and his big opportunity, the second part becomes perhaps even heavier, more involved in the drama of the people and what they go through because of the decisions they made. Some will feel that after all the work, it doesn't give you a 'normal' ending, it leaves you feeling... unsatisfied.

Hay una imagen al principio: ¡la Estatua de la Libertad, pero al revés! es un símbolo ¡potente! para toda la peli: esa promesa de libertad, de bienvenida.. dada vuelta! Para Laszlo, y capaz para muchos inmigrantes, ¿Estados Unidos es libertad de verdad, o nomás otro tipo de jaula? Como dice la esposa en una carta, citando a Goethe, algo así como 'Nadie está más esclavo que el que se cree libre sin serlo'.. esa idea te la tiran todo el tiempo, la arquitectura misma – el Brutalismo del título – no es solo lo que hace Laszlo; ¡está metida hasta los huesos en la peli! Si no le cachan mucho, el Brutalismo es ese estilo de después de la Segunda Guerra: piensen en esos edificios gigantes de puro concreto, funcionales, sin mucho adorno, salió porque había que reconstruir rápido y barato, pero mucha gente lo ve como frío, que te intimida, ¿viste?

En la peli, este estilo es el reflejo.. exacto! de cómo está Laszlo por dentro, es pesado, lleno de heridas, capaz que lindo a su manera dura, que no se dobla.. es como si estuviera tirando todo su trauma, toda su alma complicada... ¡ahí, en el cemento! Los edificios se sienten como parte de su cabeza: te intimidan, capaz te dejan ver un poquito de luz, de esperanza por unas rendijas chiquitas, pero al final son duros, aislados.. Ahora, la historia.. acá es donde creo que la peli puede dividir las aguas, y de ahí salen esos comentarios de que es un 'ladrillo'.. es lenta, a propósito.. no va a las apuradas, deja que las escenas respiren, a veces hasta que te incomoda. Las primeras dos horas van armando todo con cuidado, mostrándote los problemas de Laszlo y su gran oportunidad, la segunda parte, se pone capaz hasta más pesada, más metida en el drama de la gente y lo que pasa por las decisiones que tomaron. Algunos van a sentir que después de tanto armar la cosa, no te da un final 'normal', te deja medio... flotando, como insatisfecho.

For me, the pacing was perfect, it reflects exactly that slow, fucked up process of putting together a life, of dealing with trauma, of following your artistic vision against all odds... it's like a giant, long character study that demands patience but, ugh, how it rewards you in the end. It didn't bore me too much, just a little at times, but I got fully into it, I felt like everything was super well put together, like each scene had a reason for the overall picture. It doesn't fall into cheap drama, it treats the characters, even when they're suffering, with respect... so, is The Brutalist for everyone? Of course not, if you're looking for something quick, pure action or easy answers, this isn't your movie. It's long, it's heavy, it demands you, it hits you emotionally hard, and there are parts that are hard to watch, it leaves you with a feeling that's... well, kind of brutal, you know?

It’s a sad movie, in the end, that starts with a glimmer of hope but crashes you against the harshest reality, but if you’re willing to get into it, to immerse yourself in its world and to think about how complicated it is, it will give you an incredible cinematic experience! It’s ambitious, visually it blows your mind and the performances are incredible! It feels like a movie that will last, that people will analyze and discuss for years… so, my score? I give it a 9/10, it’s not perfect – maybe it had a couple of minutes too many in some parts – but what they dared to do and how they did it is great, especially with that budget! Para mí, el ritmo estuvo perfecto, refleja justo ese proceso lento, jodido, de armar una vida, de lidiar con los traumas, de seguir tu visión artística contra todo.. es como un estudio de personaje gigante, largo, que te pide paciencia pero ¡uf!, cómo te recompensa al final, a mí no me aburrió mucho, solo un poquito a veces, pero me metí de lleno, sentí que todo estaba súper bien armado, como que cada escena tenía un porqué para el cuadro general. No cae en el dramón barato, trata a los personajes, incluso cuando sufren, con un respeto.. entonces, ¿es The Brutalist para cualquiera? Por supuesto que no, si buscan algo rápido, pura acción o respuestas fáciles, está no es tu película, es larga, es pesada, te exige, te pega emocionalmente fuerte, y hay partes que son duras de ver, te deja con una sensación que es... bueno, medio brutal, ¿saben?

Es una peli triste, al final, que arranca con una lucecita de esperanza pero te estrella contra la realidad más dura, pero si están dispuestos a meterse, a sumergirse en su mundo y a darle vueltas a lo complicado que es, les va a dar una experiencia de cine increíble! Es ambiciosa, visualmente te deja loco y las actuaciones son ¡increíbles! Se siente como una peli que va a durar, que la gente va a analizar y discutir por años.. así que, ¿mi puntaje? Le doy un 9/10, no es perfecta – capaz le sobraron un par de minutos en algunas partes – pero lo que se animaron a hacer y cómo lo hicieron esta genial, más con ese presupuesto!
