There are movies you can’t help seeing with zero expectations. Because that’s the thing, you do not have expectations. Maybe except simply enjoying yourself or at most, passing time. When my friend decided we should see this animation as a way to unwind, I jumped at it. More because of the name than anything else. A full film dedicated to seeing Plankton fail for the umpteenth time? Sign me up!

Plankton: The Movie (2025)

But that was not the dynamic this movie took. At least not in this direct sense. Sure, Plankton, as always, is trying to steal the secret formula. But this time, we see things from Karen, Plankton’s computer wife’s point of view, and also given a glimpse into how her relationship with Plankton evolved into the closed knit union we see now.

But now, Karen is disgruntled. Because Plankton has failed to remember she’s his wife, and mostly sees her now as a means to an end. She tries to proffer her own idea, and even implements it, to making the Chum Bucket better, but in a fit of rage, Plankton destroys everything, and now Karen is done. In more ways than one. And Plankton is about to see that hell hath no fury, than a computer woman scorned.

Yeah, I guess you can tell I was happy typing that last sentence, lol. Anyway, this is not your regular Spongebob or Plankton movie. It explores the need to visit the past if you want to rectify changes in the present, or even the future. For Plankton to get Karen back to how she was before, he needs to visit their history together, and explore the possibility of remembering why she was important to him in the first place.

Even though there are some things that feel out of place, as to be expected from a movie like this, there were a lot more values I picked up that showed that this is not just your regular movie to while away time. You learn the virtues of honesty, love, and not taking for granted the devotion a person has for you just because you’re used to it. And it’s this value in itself that shows that this is not just some cartoon for children, but a film everyone can learn from.

Because how many times in our adult lives does this happen, where we’re so used to the constant presence of a person in our lives that they no longer feel relevant? Such is the case of the couple: Plankton and Karen, and now they must rediscover their love for each other, and take steps before it’s too late.

Of course, there’s the pacing which was swift and just right to me, and the comedy was the fun, light-hearted type that will make you giggle once or twice. It really is an alright movie if you don’t plan on taking it too seriously. It may look like I did, but that’s not the case. Most of this reflection is retrospective, and only came to mind as I wrote this. So, it’s indeed a good one for the whole family to enjoy. Not the kind of film I’ll necessarily want to see again, but it will keep you moderately glued to your seat.

Is there a need to rate this? Maybe a good 6.5/10. Totally recommend.

Lol, I just saw this movie as well two days ago. I watched it with my daughter and it was just a light hearty comedy film. Something you'd know if you watch SpongeBob SquarePants on a regular basis 😁😁

Al principio a mi sobrinita no le gustaban los personajes, decía que se veían feos pero le fui convenciendo con la historia y poco a poco fue entrando en ella... y ahora es uno de sus preferidos.
Gracias por traer a Plankton a la plataforma.✍️
