CineTV Contest: Someone Great - movie review
Hello guys, we need best friends that we can always rely on to be around us when everything gets rough and tough and just people we can love and trust in our space. So here’s a movie about that.
Someone Great, is a 2019 Rom-com directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, it’s a very lovely movie that shows how good having good friends can be. It’s about Jenny, a music journalist who’s gotten her dream job in San Francisco. What should be the happiest moment of her life quickly becomes heartbreaking when her boyfriend of nine years, Nate, breaks up with her because of distance. Rather than the movie being about Jenny trying to get her boyfriend back, it's about one last wild day in New York City with her two best friends, Erin and Blair.
What truly stood out to me and what stayed with me after watching was the way these three women showed up for each other. The moment Jenny called, hurting and lost, her friends didn’t hesitate to try to show up for her. They dropped everything. There was no sighing, no complaint or awkwardness about the timing. They just came. And they didn’t just show up physically they were emotionally too put everything in it. They gave her their full attention, their presence, their humor, and their heart.
That kind of friendship is rare and powerful. It wasn’t about fixing each other, but about holding their friend and being there for her as she tried to bring herself up again. And what’s even better is how, through supporting Jenny, both Erin and Blair were also made to confront the messy parts of their own lives.
Erin starts the movie by trying to avoid the fact that she's in love with her girlfriend and runs away from too many feelings. But as she sees Jenny bravely deal with heartbreak and move forward, Erin is inspired to face her own fears and consider what it really means to be vulnerable and present in a relationship.
Blair, who initially seems like the more “responsible” one, is stuck in an unhappy relationship. As the very chaotic day goes by she too begins to detach herself from the expectations she’s been keeping for herself. With her friends at her side, she finds the courage to come out of her comfort zone.
The movie showed that friendship isn’t just about comfort but it is about helping the other grow and pulling them up when they are down.
Jenny’s heartbreak brought them together in that moment but their connection helped them resolve everything they were going through.
To sum it up, Someone Great isn’t about finding “the one” or getting over a man. It’s about realizing that the most important relationships in our lives aren’t always romantic. It’s about growing through pain, letting go of what’s familiar, and realizing that you’re capable of standing on your own but also that you don’t have to do it alone.
If you’ve ever cried on a friend’s shoulder, laughed until your stomach hurt with people who just get you, or had someone tell you the truth you didn’t want to hear but needed to, this movie is something you can relate to. It reminded me that healing doesn’t always come from closure with a partner, it often comes from the people who refuse to let you forget who you are when you’ve lost sight of yourself.
This movie showed me that it doesn’t matter the depth of the mess you are in or how tough things are at the moment as long as you have the right people around, they’ll always be a way to heal and patch yourself up.
RECOMMENDATION
I would recommend Someone Great to anyone who loves movies about best friends and who hasn’t watched it yet. I’ll rate it a 9/10.
