People We Meet On Vacation - Movie Review
In the spirit of trying to watch more movies this year than I did last year, I recently watched and thought it's truly a blessing to have someone in your life that you can be your true self with. No filter, no caution, just the ability to be free and happy with this person around.
ABOUT THE MOVIE
People we meet on vacations is a 2026 American romance-comedy about two polar opposite friends, Poppy and Alex. Poppy is New York based travel writer who even though her current life has been her dream from since she could remember, doesn't want to be happy or content with it anymore, hence it's affecting her work-writing flow.
The movie is a series of flashbacks starting from nine summers ago when they met till the current time. Poppy is invited for Alex's brother's wedding and tries to decline because of work related inconvenience but David is not taking NO for an answer so she decides to go after she convinces her boss to let her go.
The next summer they go for a hiking trip because Alex's then girlfriend broke up with him and he needs something to distract him from the heart break, during this trip they meet a group of campers and instead of having causal sex with other people they end their night in their own tent promising each other that no matter where they are or who they are with, they'd always meet for a one week vacation during the summer.
In the current time, Alex's and Poppy's friendship is strained- to say the least -but Poppy still calls to let him know that she will be going for the wedding.
On landing, Poppy and Alex meet each other and it's awkward- imagine going from friends who talk everyday to becoming strangers who have to talk about the weather to fill in the tension brewing - they both share a ride to their destination.
They recall the trip to New Orleans, so summers ago where they both pretended to be engaged to get free things, despite having people they were with at the time. When they reach Poppy's house, Alex helps.her carry her bags up and discovers that her AC isn't working, he tries to help her fix it despite her refusing his help and then he gets a back spasm.
Recalling the time when they were to travel to Norway but Poppy got sick and Alex not being able to go on his own decided to meet her at her home and take care of her, she says she's taking care of him as payback for that.
He invites her for the dinner rehearsal, where he discovers that she lied about coming because she had a job to do there, and asks her why she came. She says she misses their friendship and that she wants them to go back to how things were before Tuscany but Alex says he can't go back to that.
Now two.years earlier, during their trip to Tuscany with their partners at the time Poppy has a pregnancy scare and tells Alex, after they've confirmed that she isn't, in the same moment they kiss, Poppy tells him that it's a mistake and then he storms off.
The next morning Alex proposes to his girlfriend, Poppy tells Alex that the life he is going to live with his fiance is setting, Alex doesn't agree and tells Poppy that that would be their last trip.
Present time, Poppy presses Alex on the reason he and his fiance broke up and he tells her it's because of her. They declare their love for each other and attend the wedding together.
During their dance at the wedding, Alex asks Poppy, Alex asks about their future and gets offended that Poppy still needs time to think about it, accusing her of not ever knowing what she wants and always running away from things while Poppy asks him why he insists on staying in their hometown, Linfield.
Poppy goes back to NY and after thinking for a while she decides to quit her job and travels to Linfield then explains all her fears of being too much and how much she loves him. Alex accepted her and they live happily ever after.
One of the reasons I love this movie is because of the character Poppy, how free spirited, lively, and open she was even though she had her insecurities she didn't allow it dim her. I also loved the tension.
I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a nice romance with some comedy and I'd like to know if you loved it too.
Lots of love from jhymie 🥰
