[Animation review] [Eng | Esp] Earwig and the Witch
Welcome my dear witchy travelers of the internet and thank you very much for having made a temporary stop in my post, it has been a long time since I saw an animated film by Ghibli, one of my favorite Japanese animation studios, looking for something to watch I came across the film “Earwig and the Witch” seemed somewhat interesting and caught my attention mainly due to the fact that it was relatively recent, which is why I didn't think about it any further and decided to enjoy it. Without further ado, get ready to learn some magic because we are about to begin.
Bienvenidos mis queridos viajeros brujos del internet y muchas gracias por haber hecho una parada temporal en mi post, ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que vi un filme animado de Ghibli uno de mis estudios de animación japonesa favoritos, buscando algo que ver me topé con la cinta “Earwig and the Witch” que parecía algo interesante y que me llamo la atención más que todo por el hecho de ser relativamente reciente, es por ello que no le di más vueltas al asunto y me dispuse a disfrutar de la misma. Sin más que agregar prepárense para aprender algo de magia pues estamos por comenzar.
Earwig and the Witch is based on the novel of the same name by Diana Wynne Jones, it was released in 2020, directed by Gorō Miyazaki, produced by Studio Ghibli and NHK, and has a duration of 1 hour and 22 minutes. It is an animated fantasy film, the story focuses on Earwig, a girl who was left in an orphanage by her mother. As time went by, she became fond of the place to the point that she did not want to be adopted under any circumstances, however. One day everything changes when Bella Yaga and Mandrake visit the site and decide to adopt her. Reluctant to do so, the girl tried to resist as best she could but it was a useless effort. However, all her opposition dissipated when she realized that her adoptive mother She was a witch and her adoptive father was a demon, making her whole new experience that much more interesting.
Earwig and the Witch se encuentra basada en la novela homónima de Diana Wynne Jones, fue estrenada en 2020, dirigida por Gorō Miyazaki, producida por Studio Ghibli y NHK, cuenta con una duración de 1 hora y 22 minutos. Es un filme animado de fantasía, la historia se centra en Earwig, una niña que fue dejada en un orfanato por su madre, con el pasar del tiempo le agarro cariño al sitio al punto de que no quería ser adoptada bajo ningún concepto, no obstante, un día todo cambia cuando Bella Yaga y Mandrake visitan el sitio y deciden adoptarla, renuente al hecho la niña trato de resistirse como pudo pero fue un esfuerzo inútil, sin embargo, toda su oposición se disipó cuando se dio cuenta de que su madre adoptiva era una bruja y su padre adoptivo un demonio, haciendo de toda su nueva experiencia algo mucho más interesante.

The animation is strange, the above is because it is the first film made by computer, the issue is that the film, although it presents a good fluidity, lacks an interesting level of detail, which results in many scenes looking empty and boring. , is a quite striking contrast, especially when compared to the rest of the studio's films, which have stood out for their extremely beautiful and detailed sets.
La animación es extraña, lo anterior se debe a que es la primera película realizada por computadora, el asunto es que el filme si bien presenta una buena fluidez carece de un nivel de detalle interesante lo que deriva en que muchas escenas se vean vacías y aburridas, es un contraste bastante impactante sobre todo si se compara con el resto de filmes del estudio que han destacado por sus escenografías sumamente hermosas y detalladas.
The soundtrack is quite dull, it doesn't really have any interesting point or moment worth highlighting, it is a section that is not used in any way and for which there is never a situation that can accompany it in a good way.
La banda sonora es bastante sosa, no tiene realmente ningún punto interesante ni momento que valga la pena destacar, es un apartado que no es aprovechado de ninguna forma y para el cual nunca existe una situación que pueda acompañar de buena forma.
The construction of the world is extremely forgettable, throughout the film there are hints of a certain degree of fantasy but this theme is never explored nor is there any mention of how it relates to its setting, for a brief moment an attempt is made to delve into it. although it doesn't dare at all so it doesn't amount to anything, leaving all this as a great element that is not explored in any way, making its context feel insipid and completely wasted.
La construcción del mundo es sumamente olvidable, a lo largo del filme se dan indicios de cierto grado de fantasía pero nunca se explora dicho tema ni se hace mención de cómo se relaciona la misma con su ambientación, por un breve momento se intenta ahondar al respecto aunque no se atreve del todo por lo que no se llega a nada dejando todo esto como un gran elemento que no se explora de ninguna forma haciendo que su contexto se sienta insípido y completamente desaprovechado.
The plot is completely boring, you never get anywhere or establish any kind of objective, this only leaves the film feeling improvised and without a fixed direction, the only thing that half saves it are some moments of comedy that make it a bit of grace. Narratively it is disorganized, throughout the film only data is released that do not seem to have a logical cohesion with each other, at the same time, the fact that its protagonist is a kind of Mary Sue does not help its premise at all. Fortunately, its duration is short, despite this it gives enough time to be able to appreciate all the errors it harbors and that make it feel disastrous.
La trama es completamente aburrida, nunca se llega a ningún sitio ni se establece alguna clase de objetivo, esto solo deja que el filme se sienta improvisado y sin un rumbo fijo, lo único que lo medio salva son algunos momentos de comedia que hacen un poco de gracia. Narrativamente es desordenada, a lo largo del filme solo se van soltando datos que no parecen tener una cohesión lógica entre sí, a su vez, el hecho de que su protagonista sea una especie de Mary Sue no ayuda en absolutamente nada a su premisa. Afortunadamente, su duración es poca, pese a ello da el tiempo suficiente como para poder apreciar todos los errores que alberga y que la hacen sentir desastrosa.
As I mentioned previously, the main trait of the protagonist is that everything turns out well for her, this added to her quite unpleasant personality makes her an easily detestable character, apart from the fact that she has the power of the script on her side and that it is somewhat insufferable, she has nothing else that makes it stand out; The rest of the characters are completely forgettable, flat and inconsequential.
Como mencione previamente el rasgo principal de la protagonista es que todo le sale bien, esto sumado a su personalidad bastante desagradable la hacen un personaje fácilmente detestable, fuera de que tiene el poder del guion de su lado y que resulta algo insufrible no tiene más nada que la haga destacar; el resto de personajes son completamente olvidables, planos e intrascendentes.
Earwig and the Witch makes the serious mistake of not having a goal to aim for, the film feels like a complete aimless nonsense because nothing interesting or anything even halfway entertaining ever happens throughout it, all of this only gets worse. due to its moderately insufferable protagonist and the rest of the characters lacking any iota of something that makes them interesting. It is for all of the above that it deserves 1.5 stars out of 7, although the studio dared to use a different animation style, they completely forgot to add that magic and charm that characterizes their films, the above being the main reason why which is why this film feels so dissonant with the artwork previously produced by Ghibli.
Earwig and the Witch comete el grave error de no tener una meta a la cual apuntar, el filme se siente como un completo despropósito sin objetivo debido a que a lo largo de este nunca sucede nada interesante ni nada mediamente entretenido, todo esto solo se agrava debido a su protagonista medianamente insufrible y al resto de personajes carentes de cualquier ápice de algo que los haga interesantes. Es por todo lo anterior que merece 1.5 estrellas de 7, pese a que el estudio se atrevió a utilizar un estilo de animación diferente se les olvidó por completo el añadir esa magia y encanto que caracteriza a sus filmes, siendo lo anterior la principal razón por la que esta cinta se siente tan disonante con las obras de artes producidas previamente por Ghibli.
