[Movie review] [Eng | Esp] the Novice | A lot of something isn't good, including effort

Welcome my dear obsessive internet travelers and thank you very much for having made a temporary stop in my post, I am not a fan of sports films since many are repetitive especially those based on the most well-known sports, fortunately the film that brings us together today is not generic and focuses on a not so well known sport, I'm talking, of course, about the movie called "The Novice" which touches on quite interesting and not so well-known topics in this world. Without further ado, get ready to paddle a lot because we are about to start.
Bienvenidos mis queridos viajeros obsesivos del internet y muchas gracias por haber hecho una parada temporal en mi post, no soy fanático de los filmes deportivos puesto que muchos son repetitivos sobre todo los que se basan en los deportes más conocidos, afortunadamente la cinta que hoy nos reúne no resulta genérica y tiene como foco un deporte no tan conocido, estoy hablando por supuesto de la película titulada "The Novice" que toca temas bastante interesantes y no tan conocidos de este mundillo. Sin más que agregar prepárense para remar mucho pues estamos por comenzar.
The Novice was released in 2021, directed by Lauren Hadaway, produced by Picture Movers Anonymous and H2L Media Group, has a running time of 1 hour and 34 minutes. It is a psychological sports film, it focuses on Alex Dall, a very obsessive college student who decides to join the rowing team, later she is completely determined to be the best without caring about the fact that she has to commit herself both physically and mentally, this determination to risk whatever it takes in order to achieve her goal will bring many inconveniences sooner rather than later.
The Novice fue estrenada en 2021, dirigida por Lauren Hadaway, producida por Picture Movers Anonymous y H2L Media Group, cuenta con una duración de 1 hora y 34 minutos. Es un filme psicológico de deportes, se enfoca a Alex Dall una estudiante universitaria muy obsesiva que decide unirse al equipo de remo, posteriormente se encuentra completamente decidida a ser la mejor sin importarle el hecho de tener que comprometerse tanto física como mentalmente, esta determinación de arriesgar lo que haga falta a fin de conseguir su objetivo traerá muchos inconvenientes más temprano que tarde.

The soundtrack maintains that melancholic essence expressed in very well implemented instrumental music, it manages to make that feeling of intrigue and uncertainty feel more palpable and contributes productively to the atmosphere of the film.
La banda sonora mantiene esa esencia melancólica expresada en música instrumental muy bien implementada, está logra que ese sentimiento de intriga e incierto se sienta más palpable y contribuya productivamente a la atmósfera del filme.
The construction of the world presents the typical and stereotyped scenario of the American university, however this focuses on it from the point of view of a student who does not like most of that type of thing, in turn, it also focuses on how sports are important for many students who need to obtain scholarships to be able to continue with their careers, As well as all the corruption that can exist in this world in order to be obtained by the person they consider most "deserving" of it, this gives an interesting and somewhat depressing context to the film. The setting is quite chaotic and gloomy in equal parts, this is a success because it aligns with the obsessive vision that the protagonist has, in addition, interesting camera angles are used that only contribute to that strange perspective that is maintained throughout the film.
La construcción de mundo presenta el escenario típico y estereotipado de la universidad estadounidense, no obstante esto lo enfoca desde el punto de vista de una estudiante que no gusta de la mayoría de ese tipo de cosas, a su vez, también enfoca el como los deportes son importantes para muchos estudiantes que necesitan obtener becas para poder seguir con sus carreras, así como toda la corrupción que puede haber en este mundillo a fin de que la obtenga la persona que ellos consideren más "merecedora" de ello, esto le da un contexto interesante y algo deprimente al filme. La ambientación es bastante caótica y lúgubre a partes iguales esto es un acierto debido a que se alinea con la visión obsesiva que posee la protagonista, además, se utilizan ángulos de cámara interesante que solo contribuyen con esa perspectiva extraña que se mantiene a lo largo del filme.
The plot is quite dense and even uncomfortable at times, it does not seek to show the glory of the sport but the way of living it of a mentally unbalanced person, this makes the film give another meaning to the effort and dedication by showing it as harmful elements if taken to the extreme, the above is based on the fact that much of something is not good (Reference to Karate Kid jajaja). As I mentioned previously the film has a good dose of chaos and the narrative is no exception to it, it tells the story in a slightly messy way and deserves attention to fully understand it, the issue of why this is a success is the fact that it seeks to imitate the erratic state of mind of its protagonist so it gives the film a unique touch. The duration is successful, throughout the film the information is condensed to be able to adapt to the short time it has, despite this it fulfills the fact of giving the necessary data to be able to understand the different events that the film hosts and the general message that it tries to give.
La trama es bastante densa e incluso incómoda en algunos momentos, está no busca mostrar la gloria del deporte sino la forma de vivirlo de una persona desequilibrada mentalmente, esto hace que el filme le dé otro sentido al esfuerzo y dedicación al mostrarlo como elementos perjudiciales si se llevan al extremo, lo anterior se sustenta en el hecho de que mucho de algo no es bueno (Referencia a Karate Kid jajaja). Como mencioné previamente la cinta tiene una buena dosis de caos y la narrativa no es la excepción a ello, está cuenta la historia de una forma un poco desordenada y amerita atención para comprenderla del todo, el asunto de porque esto es un acierto es por el hecho de que busca imitar el estado mental errático de su protagonista por lo que le da al filme un toque único. La duración es acertada, a lo largo de la cinta la información es condensada para poder adaptarse al poco tiempo que tiene, pese a ello cumple con el hecho de dar los datos necesarios para poder entender los diferentes acontecimientos que alberga la cinta y el mensaje general que se intenta dar.
The protagonist from the beginning shows that she is not a normal person since she is capable of reaching the last instances in order to fulfill her goal regardless of whether she self-destructs in the process, it is denoted how toxic behaviors affect her both physically and mentally, however the problem with her is that the film does not give itself the time to explore her beyond her problems and that the viewer can understand the journey she takes and thus be able to feel empathy for her and not simply pity, if this option had been chosen she would have had a very interesting and even complex three-dimensional character, having ignored this crucial part leaves a character who only suffers as a result of her obsession; Does this mean he's a bad character? Not entirely, but it does express a character who is defined by his problem and not that the problem is part of the personality of the problem. At the end of the film she seems to have a catharsis but it is not developed or explained in any way so it is left to the viewer's interpretation. Personally I think that she did not learn anything from her experiences and I am not aware of how harmful her behavior is. obsessive behavior, maybe if you saw it we can debate about it in the comments box.
La protagonista desde el vamos deja ver que no es una persona normal puesto que es capaz de llegar hasta las últimas instancias con tal de cumplir con su objetivo sin importar que se autodestruya en el proceso, denotanse como los comportamientos tóxicos le afectan tanto física como mentalmente, no obstante el problema con ella es que el filme no se da el tiempo para que explorarla más allá de sus problemas y que el espectador pueda comprender el recorrido que lleva y así poder sentir empatía por ella y no simplemente lástima, si se hubiese optado por esta opción se habría tenido un personaje tridimensional muy interesante e incluso hasta complejo, el haber obviado esta parte crucial deja a personaje que solo sufre producto de su obsesión; ¿Quiere decir esto que es un mal personaje? No del todo, pero si expresa a un personaje que lo define su problema y no que el problema forma parte de la personalidad del mismo. Al final del filme esta parece tener una catarsis pero está no es desarrollado ni explicada de ninguna forma por lo que queda a interpretación del espectador, en lo personal pienso que ella no aprendió nada de sus vivencias y no tomo consciencia de lo perjudicial que resulta su comportamiento obsesivo, igual si la vieron podemos debatir al respecto en la caja de comentarios.
The Novice presents an interesting perspective of sports in which athletes are willing to exceed their limits in a bad way by putting their physique and their mind at risk in order to reach a goal, at the same time, the realistic way in which it shows favoritism over effort and good abilities is captivating. As negative points is precisely the same point, the fact of not taking the time to develop its protagonist beyond his obsession in order to give him a character of a person, this does not end up ruining the film as such but it is a point that could have been developed in a better way. It is because of all the above that it deserves 3.5 stars out of 7, despite all the mistakes mentioned it is still captivating to see one of the darkest sides of sports, so I recommend watching it at least once to be uncomfortable with the decisions and actions of the protagonist.
The Novice plantea una perspectiva interesante de los deportes en la que los atletas están dispuestos a sobrepasar sus límites de mala forma poniendo su físico y su mente en riesgo con tal de llegar a una meta, a su vez, resulta atrapante la forma realista en que muestra el favoritismo por encima del esfuerzo y de las buenas capacidades, como puntos negativos se encuentra precisamente el mismo punto, el hecho de no tomarse el tiempo para desarrollar a su protagonista más allá de su obsesión a fin de darle un carácter de persona, esto no termina arruinando el filme como tal pero si es un punto que pudo haberse desarrollado de mejor forma. Es por todo lo anterior que merece 3.5 estrellas de 7, pese a todos los desaciertos mencionados igual resulta atrapante el hecho de ver uno de los lados más oscuros de los deportes por lo que recomiendo verla al menos una vez para incomodarse con las decisiones y acciones de la protagonista.
