[Movie review] [Eng | Esp] Brujería | Every culture has its dark side
Welcome my dear internet traveling witches and thank you very much for having made a temporary stop in my post, I have to admit that due to the title of the film I expected it to be a horror film since there is nothing more to speculate when they say "Brujería" You don't think about very good things. Without further ado, prepare to act like Indians because we are about to begin.
Bienvenidos mis queridos brujos viajeros del internet y muchas gracias por haber hecho una parada temporal en mi post, he de admitir que por el título de la película esperaba que fuese un filme de terror puesto que no hay más para especular cuando te dicen "Brujería" no se piensa en cosas muy buenas. Sin más que agregar prepárense para actuar como indios pues estamos por comenzar.
Brujería was released in March of this year, directed by Christopher Murray, produced by Bord Cadre Films and Match Factory Productions, and has a duration of 1 hour and 40 minutes. It is a story of drama and fantasy, everything takes place on the island of Chiloé at the end of the 19th century, where there lives an indigenous girl named Rosa who, together with her father, works on a farm owned by Germans, after a strange event with The cattle on the farm accuse her father and brutally murder him. This little girl seeks justice through conventional means but they fail her, so she decides to go to the king of a group of Indians who practice witchcraft so that justice can be done for the crime committed in cold blood.
Brujería fue estrenada en marzo de este año, dirigida por Christopher Murray, producida por Bord Cadre Films y Match Factory Productions, cuenta con una duración de 1 hora y 40 minutos. Es una historia de drama y fantasía, todo se desarrolla en la isla de Chiloé a finales del siglo XIX, en esta vive una niña indígena llamada Rosa la cual en conjunto con su padre trabajan en una finca propiedad de alemanes, tras un suceso extraño con el ganado de la finca acusan a su padre y lo asesinan brutalmente, esta pequeña busca justicia mediante los medios convencionales pero estos le fallan por lo que decide acudir al rey de un grupo de indios que practican la brujería para que hagan justicia ante el crimen cometido a sangre fría.

The soundtrack is fine, it is nothing spectacular but it fulfills its purpose of being present and accompanying all the events of the plot in a good way.
La banda sonora está bien, esta no es nada espectacular pero cumple su cometido de estar presente y acompañar de buena forma a todos los acontecimientos de la trama.
The world building is very beautiful in terms of its scenery, showing countless completely beautiful landscapes that perfectly represent the beauty of nature. Looking at the world it presents, it is noteworthy that at all times you can perceive the tension that exists between the Indians and the Aryans, since these range from religion to culture. This conflict has a good presence within the film and although it has good presence within the film, it is boring that it only victimizes the Indians without exploring their culture and so on to feel something more for them that only hurts.
La construcción de mundo es muy hermosa en cuando a su escenografía, muestran un sin número de paisajes completamente hermosos que representan perfectamente la belleza de la naturaleza. De cara al mundo que plantea es de destacar que en todo momento se puede percibir esa tensión que existe entre los indios y los arios siendo que estás van desde lo religioso hasta la cultura, este conflicto tiene una buena presencia dentro del filme y si bien tiene buena presencia dentro del filme resulta aburrido que solo victimice a los indios sin explorar su cultura y demás para sentir algo más por ellos que solo lastima.
The plot seeks to reflect the cruelty and inequality of that time to the point of leaving the most unspeakable acts unpunished, this perfectly reflects the countless conflicts that arose as a result of colonization. Something that does not have as much presence is witchcraft and traditions of the Indians, being a supposedly focal point of the film, it was necessary to focus and expand this concept more so that its importance was perfectly captured. The length of the film is not the problem but rather the way in which it decides to develop the events, with many ideas left in the pipeline and some others being explained unsatisfactorily.
La trama busca reflejar la crueldad e inequidad de ese tiempo al punto de dejar impune los actos más inenarrables, esto refleja perfectamente ese sin número de conflictos surgidos producto de las colonizaciones. Algo que no tiene tanta presencia es la brujería y tradiciones de los indios, siendo un punto supuestamente focal del filme era necesario enfocar y expandir más este concepto para que su importancia quedase perfectamente plasmada. La duración del filme no es el problema sino la forma en que decide desarrollar los acontecimientos siendo que muchas ideas quedan en el tintero y algunas otras son explicadas insatisfactoriamente.
Rosa is a protagonist, she is a girl frustrated with the various injustices that occur and go unpunished, at the same time, she also has a certain identity and religious crisis, a product of having been closely related to the Germans despite being of Indian descent, this makes her have a certain degree of depth, the issue is that despite the above, many of the elements that are supposed to give it character are left without a correct exploration, only adding data to the air. The rest of the characters are only there to reinforce these concepts rather than to be notable as individuals, leaving him as cannon fodder without personality.
Rosa es una protagonista decente, es una niña frustrada con las diversas injusticias que transcurren y quedan impunes, a su vez, también tiene cierta crisis de identidad religiosa, producto de haber estado muy relacionada con los alemanes pese a ser de ascendencia india, esto hace que tenga cierto grado de profundidad, el asunto es que pese a lo anterior muchos de los elementos que se supone le dan carácter quedan sin una correcta exploración solo añadiéndose como datos al aire. El resto de personajes solo están para reforzar esos conceptos más que para ser destacables como individuos, dejándolo como carne de cañón sin personalidad.
Brujería has an interesting premise that focuses on post-colonization conflicts resulting from wanting to superimpose things on top of others, making the advent of discrepancies and desires for justice inevitable, its characters reflect those desires either on one side. or on the other hand, the problem with this is the lack of exploration regarding witchcraft and Indian culture, which are important factors within the film but with very little presence, which ends up weighing negatively on the main conflict. It is for all of the above that it deserves 2.5 stars out of 7, a curious film that is interesting for the fact that it represents many differences with respect to the settlers and the indigenous people, although it does not exploit their strengths, being a blunder.
Brujería tiene una premisa interesante que se enfoca en los conflictos posteriores a la colonización producto de querer superponer cosas por encima de otras, haciendo que el advenimiento de las discrepancias y los deseos de justicia sean inevitables, sus personajes reflejan esos deseos bien sea de un lado o del otro, el problema con esto es la falta de exploración con respecto a la brujería y de la cultura de los indios que son factores importantes dentro del filme pero con muy poca presencia, lo que termina pesando para mal en el conflicto principal. Es por todo lo anterior que merece 2.5 estrellas de 7, una película curiosa que resulta interesante por el hecho de representar muchas diferencias con respecto a los colonos y los indígenas aunque no explota sus puntos fuertes siendo un error garrafal.
