Movie Review: Me Before You
Me Before You is truly one of the more emotional romantic films I've ever seen. The film follows the adventures of a happy and helpful young woman named Louisa Clark, who has a job working with a young, wealthy man named Will Traynor who was paralyzed by a terrible accident. They don't get along right away, with Will's hope in life being broken, and Louisa's constant smile-making. Over time they become great friends; their friendship gradually turns into love.

This is a wonderful film, and one thing I really appreciate is the lesson that this film imparted on me: Love is a beautiful thing, and it can change people. Louisa is Will's chance for happiness, helping him rediscover joy in the little things. She escorts him on trips, makes him laugh and tells him that life can still have significance. Meanwhile, Will works to make Louisa feel more confident and introduces her to a new way of dreaming: a bigger one than the one she's always dreamed of living in. I believe both characters have had some impact on each other's life.
The acting in this film is fairly good. The emotion of the actors was believable; I was able to feel the emotion of the characters. Louisa was dressed in bright colors and was cheerful, Will was quiet and sad, there was a lot of pain inside him. The chemistry between them was genuine and so was the love story from start to finish.
The film also addresses challenging issues such as disability, hope, sacrifice and personal decisions. Love story isn't just love story. It makes the viewer reflect upon the change in life and their response to suffering. I felt sorry for Louisa as well, though, for giving her heart to someone she truly loved, I know of Will's struggles, and I was sorry for him.
I also liked the cinematography. Beautiful scenes, soothing music and gentle lighting made many scenes even more heart-wrenching. The music is well suited to the story, and helps the viewers relate to the characters. I can only say that some scenes were so touching that I remember them even after the movie.
But I wasn't particularly fond of the ending. Emotionally strong and powerful, but made me feel sad. I was hoping the story would have been different as I wanted the two main characters to have a happy life together. While the movie's ending might not be to everyone's taste, it's one of what makes it so memorable. It is a reminder to us that love often does not always end in the way we think it will.
This movie taught me a valuable lesson, too. I knew that I need to respect people that I love, and never take life for granted, because in a moment everything could have changed. It also made me realize to get out of my shell and take advantage of anything I could, like Louisa did.
Me Before You is a romantic drama, overall, with a lot of love, laughter, sadness and lessons in life. It's a film which to be honest can get you smiling, crying and thinking hard at the same time. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who loves emotional romance films with characters with meaning and a story which will stay forever in the heart of the viewer after the credits.
