Me gustan las películas de fantasía más que todo por los efectos visuales y el vestuario, ya que todo está diseñado para transportarnos a ese lugar y ser parte de la historia, por lo menos así lo veo yo, así que vi Damsel pero no sé si catalogarla del genero fantasía como tal más bien me pareció que es una mezcla de muchas cosas. No sé si esperaba otra cosa pero no me pareció muy buena, lo que cambia s que no es el típico caballero que salva a la damisela, aquí la damisela sabe cuidase. Elodie vive en un reino pobre y nevado con su padre Lord Bayford, su madrastra y su hermana pequeña, su reino tiene problemas económicos, así que cuando llega una propuesta de matrimonio de un rico reino vecino, parece la solución perfecta a sus problemas. Elodie acepta casarse con este príncipe para salvar a su pueblo, a pesar de que no quería y tampoco lo conocía, quizás esto parezca el mismo cuento de siempre de una princesa que hace un sacrificio por un bien mayor pero no es tan común como creemos y las cosas pasan algo diferente ya que después de la ceremonia se celebra un extraño ritual en el que Elodie es llevada a una caverna, y aqui se revela la verdad, no está allí para ser novia sino para ser sacrificada a un dragón que vive en la montaña.

Esta familia real ha mantenido su prosperidad mediante un pacto con el dragón, al que le ofrecen novias reales como sacrificio durante generaciones, cuando Elodie es encerrada en la cueva la película pasa de ser un romance de cuento de hadas a una historia de supervivencia, todo lo demás es ella tratando de escapar del dragón utilizando su ingenio y los recursos que pueda encontrar. Por el camino, descubre la verdad sobre el pacto entre el dragón y la familia real, hay pruebas de que otras princesas fueron sacrificadas antes que ella. Es una trama sencilla pero tiene algunas escenas de acción y la protagonista Millie Bobby Brown hace un buen trabajo y puede mostrar su talento, desde Stranger Things ha ido construyendo su carrera como actriz principal y creo que Damsel es un buen papel para ella, aunque también me gustó mucho en Enola Holmes, cuidado y si no más. La mayor parte de la película, está sola en la pantalla y de verdad llega a transmitir el miedo que tiene y el ingenio por sobrevivir. También hay otros actores secundarios como Angela Bassett como Lady Bayford aunque tiene muy pocas escenas, Ray Winstone en su papel de padre de Elodie, pero no se le da mucha profundidad. El príncipe Enrique, interpretado por Nick Robinson, es algo tonto y su personaje no me convenció mucho.

Por un lado me gusta Damsel pero por otro tengo mis criticas, lo que me gusta es que en lugar de esperar a que un caballero la salve Elodie tiene que salvarse a sí misma, utilizando su inteligencia y determinación para superar obstáculos que parecen imposibles, esto creo que es algo muy común en las mujeres de esta época no nos quedamos sentadas a esperar que alguien nos salve como nuestras abuelas por ejemplo sino que tenemos que salir adelante y darle vuelta a la cabeza para lograr las cosas, así la situación se ponga difícil. El diseño visual también es bueno hablando del dragón, del vestuario y de la cueva. Lo que critico es el guión es que no sé como decirlo me pareció escaso y poco desarrollado, sentí que los personajes no se desarrollaron bien y que los diálogos son como estúpidos, además la película tarda demasiado en llegar a la acción principal, es casi la mitad de la película antes de que Elodie sea arrojada a la cueva y aunque las secuencias de supervivencia son tensas y algo repetitivas, también tiene su mensaje feminista de forma demasiado obvia, y creo que eso no hace falta, hubiese quedado mejor algo sutil donde se muestre la fuerza de Elodie sin tener quie contarlo de forma tan explícita.

El final de Damsel es algo predecible, Elodie durante toda la película trata de sobrevivir a numerosos encuentros con el dragón y además descubre la verdad sobre el pacto, se entera de que el dragón fue traicionado una vez por un rey que prometió casarse con ella en forma humana, pero intentó matarla cuando reveló su verdadera naturaleza. Desde ese momento el dragón ha exigido sacrificios reales como venganza, obligando al reino a continuar el ciclo de traición y muerte, Elodie deja claro que el ciclo de sacrificios termina con ella. Regresa a su casa junto con su hermana que también iba a ser usada como sacrificio tras haber roto la maldición y liberado a las generaciones futuras de la venganza del dragón. Yo le doy a Damsel un 6/10 porque es una película de fantasía aceptable que intenta hacer algo diferente y Millie Bobby Brown demuestra que es capaz de llevar adelante una película, aunque el material no siempre le dé lo suficiente para trabajar. Aunque las secuencias del dragón son tensas y tiene buenos efectos visuales el mayor problema de la película es el enfoque tonto de sus temas y el poco dialogo, la idea de una película de fantasía con una protagonista que no necesite ser rescatada, puede ser interesante pero si decides verla mantén una expectativa baja, seguro disfrutas el tiempo que ves Damsel pero se te olvidará en cuanto termine.

What I criticize is the script is that I don't know how to say it, I felt that the characters were not well developed and that the dialogues are kind of stupid, also the movie takes too long to get to the main action, It's almost half of the movie before Elodie is thrown into the cave and although the survival sequences are tense and somewhat repetitive, it also has its feminist message in a too obvious way, and I think that's not necessary, it would have been better something subtle where Elodie's strength is shown without having to tell it in such an explicit way.

The ending of Damsel is somewhat predictable, Elodie throughout the film tries to survive numerous encounters with the dragon and also discovers the truth about the pact, she learns that the dragon was once betrayed by a king who promised to marry her in human form, but tried to kill her when she revealed her true nature.
