Evil Dead Rise me salió justo como yo esperaba después de tanto tiempo esperando otra película de esta franquicia que tanto me gusta y una de estas noches paseando por streaming me dije conchale si esta peli yo la vi porque no hablé nunca de ella, así que la volví a ver para refrescar porque aunque tiene algunas cosas que no me gustaron para nada en sí la peli me la disfruté. Esta nueva entrega de Evil Dead trajo muchax cosas interesantes y nuevas a este mundo infernal que, la historia funciona bien combinando el humor negro con efectos prácticos brutales y creando escenas de gore originales y muy bien hechas que me dejaron con la boca abierta. Los personajes a pesar de que no son gran cosa si funcionan bien dentro del contexto de la película y digamos que cumplen con su función sin problemas, aunque las actuaciones se sintieron raras y débiles más que todo las de los niños que fueron bastante malas, además las decisiones de los personajes fueron muy estúpidas e ilógicas solamente para generar suspenso barato y eso es algo que me molestó bastante. Sin embargo me gustó mucho esta película y el final fue absolutamente brutal y sangriento, espero que hagan más películas de Evil Dead porque esta franquicia tiene mucho potencial todavía.

Esta nueva película de Evil Dead definitivamente es diferente a las anteriores pero mantiene esa esencia sanguinaria y violenta que uno esperamo de esta saga, el cambio de la cabaña tradicional hacia un edificio fue me pareció una decisión muy inteligente porque le dió un aire fresco y claustrofóbico que funciona muy bien para este tipo de historias. Lee Cronin hizo un trabajo decente como director y más si uno considera que este es apenas su segunda peli después de The Hole in the Ground, a mí me parece que logró crear una atmósfera tensa y opresiva de esas que te mantienen incómodo durante toda la película y eso es lo que necesita una buena película de horror. Los efectos especiales son probablemente lo mejor de toda la película, el maquillaje y los efectos prácticos están increíblemente bien hechos y realmente se nota el presupuesto y el cuidado que pusieron en cada detalle gore, desde las heridas hasta las transformaciones de los demonios todo se ve brutal y realista. También tengo que hablar del sonido porque ayuda a construir esa sensación de desesperación y caos que domina la película, cada ruido extraño y cada silencio incómodo está bien puesto para causar impacto en uno.

La historia en si misma es bastante simple y directa, dos hermanas que se reencuentran después de mucho tiempo y terminan luchando por sus vidas cuando los demonios salen de su escondite gracias a que un niño curioso decidió reproducir unas grabaciones malditas que encontró en un banco abandonado debajo del edificio. Beth que se dedica a trabajar con sonido ha estado viajando por el mundo con una banda de rock y regresa a Los Angeles para reconectarse con su hermana Ellie quien está criando sola a sus tres hijos después de que su esposo las abandonara, la dinámica familiar se sirelacuón famliar que hay entre ellos es bastante autentica y creíble hasta que todo se va al carajo y comienza la masacre. Danny es el hijo mayor que encuentra el libro maldito y accidentalmente desata el mal al reproducir las grabaciones del sacerdote, Bridget es la hija adolescente rebelde y Cassie es la niña pequeña que se convierte en el corazón emocional de la película, todos estos personajes tienen personalidades definidas aunque no muy profundas pero están bien desarrollados para que te importe lo que les pasa. Algo que le da puntos extra es que el apartamento se siente como un lugar real donde vive una familia de clase trabajadora y no como un set de película artificial, todos los detalles desde los muebles hasta la ropa están y como uo me fijo mucho en esas cosas eso hace que uno se sienta más metido en la historia.

Los demonios en esta película son bien brutales y despiadados, no hay compasión ni humanidad restante en ellos y eso los hace mucho más aterradores que en entregas anteriores donde a veces tenían un toque cómico, aquí son pura maldad concentrada y su único objetivo es causar el máximo sufrimiento posible. Alyssa Sutherland hace un trabajo excepcional interpretando a Ellie una vez que se convierte en demonio porque su transformación va poco a poco y esto es lgo perturbador y realmente logra crear un personaje aterrador que te pone los pelos de punta cada vez que aparece. La forma en que los efectos prácticos se combinan con actuaciones convincentes hace que las escenas de posesión se vean más reales y viscerales, digame esa parte cuando Ellie comienza a aterrorizar a su propia familia de formas cada vez mas creativas y sádicas. El clímax de la película donde todos los demonios se fusionan en una monstruosidad gigante es completamente loco y excesivo pero funciona bien dentro del contexto de la franquicia, es el tipo de locura que esperas de Evil Dead llevada al extremo con efectos espectaculares. Para mí yo creo que la escena del ascensor lleno de sangre es probablemente una de las escenas mejores de toda la película, porque te genera muchas cosas como claustrofobia, repugnancia y es aterradora al mismo tiempo, eso demuestra la habilidad de Cronin para crear tensión.

Ahora cual es el problema que tengo con la película o mejor dicho que fue lo que no me gustó es que las actuaciones de los niños no están a la altura de los demás, y esto se ve muco en los momentos mas dramáticos donde necesitas creer realmente en las emociones que están sintiendo estos personajes, y me pareció que era muy artificial y sobreactuado en varias ocasiones importantes. Además hay demasiados momentos donde los personajes toman decisiones completamente estúpidas solo para avanzar la trama o crear situaciones de suspenso forzado, como cuando Kassie abre la puerta para dejar entrar a su mamá que obviamente está poseída o cuando no aprovechan oportunidades claras para escapar del edificio. La película también sufre de algunos momentos donde el ritmo se vuelve lento y y eso hace que pierdas el momento, esto más que yodo pasa a mitad de la peli donde parece que no sabe muy bien hacia donde ir con la historia y se queda estancada por unos minutos. Sin embargo estos problemas no arruinan la experiencia porque cuando la película funciona realmente funciona bien y te mantiene pegado a la pantalla esperando a ver que locura va a pasar después, por esto yo le doy un 7/10, además que no es tan mala porque la vi por segunda vez jajaja y el final es bastante salvaje y compensa por la mayoría de los defectos que pueda tener la película en general.

Evil Dead Rise came out just as I expected after so long waiting for another movie of this franchise that I like so much and one of these nights walking through streaming I said to myself conchale if this movie I saw it because I never talked about it, so I watched it again to refresh because although it has some things that I didn't like at all I enjoyed the movie itself. This new installment of Evil Dead brought a lot of interesting and new things to this hellish world that, the story works well combining black humor with brutal practical effects and creating original and very well done gore scenes that left me with my mouth open. The characters, although they are not great, they work well within the context of the film and let's say that they fulfill their role without problems, although the performances felt weird and weak, especially those of the children who were pretty bad, also the decisions of the characters were very stupid and illogical just to generate cheap suspense and that is something that bothered me a lot. However I really liked this movie and the ending was absolutely brutal and bloody, I hope they make more Evil Dead movies because this franchise still has a lot of potential.

This new Evil Dead movie is definitely different from the previous ones but it keeps that bloodthirsty and violent essence that one expects from this saga, the change from the traditional cabin to a building was I thought a very smart decision because it gave it a fresh and claustrophobic air that works very well for this kind of stories. Lee Cronin did a decent job as a director and even more if one considers that this is only his second movie after The Hole in the Ground, I think he managed to create a tense and oppressive atmosphere that keeps you uncomfortable during the whole movie and that's what a good horror movie needs. The special effects are probably the best of the whole movie, the makeup and practical effects are incredibly well done and you can really notice the budget and the care they put in every gore detail, from the wounds to the demons transformations everything looks brutal and realistic. I also have to talk about the sound because it helps build that sense of desperation and chaos that dominates the film, every strange noise and awkward silence is well placed to make an impact on you.

The story itself is pretty simple and straightforward, two sisters who meet again after a long time and end up fighting for their lives when the demons come out of hiding thanks to a curious boy who decided to play some cursed recordings he found in an abandoned bench under the building. Beth who works in sound has been traveling the world with a rock band and returns to Los Angeles to reconnect with her sister Ellie who is raising her three children alone after her husband abandoned them, the family dynamic between them is quite authentic and believable until it all goes to hell and the massacre begins. Danny is the oldest son who finds the cursed book and accidentally unleashes evil by playing the priest's recordings, Bridget is the rebellious teenage daughter and Cassie is the little girl who becomes the emotional heart of the film, all these characters have defined personalities although not very deep but they are well developed to make you care about what happens to them. Something that gives it extra points is that the apartment feels like a real place where a working class family lives and not like an artificial movie set, all the details from the furniture to the clothes are there and since I pay a lot of attention to those things it makes you feel more involved in the story.

The demons in this movie are very brutal and ruthless, there is no compassion or humanity left in them and that makes them much more terrifying than in previous installments where sometimes they had a comic touch, here they are pure concentrated evil and their only goal is to cause as much suffering as possible. Alyssa Sutherland does an exceptional job playing Ellie once she becomes a demon because her transformation goes little by little and this is somewhat disturbing and she really manages to create a terrifying character that makes your hair stand on end every time she appears. The way the practical effects are combined with convincing performances makes the possession scenes look more real and visceral, say that part when Ellie starts terrorizing her own family in increasingly creative and sadistic ways. The climax of the movie where all the demons merge into one giant monstrosity is completely insane and over the top but it works well within the context of the franchise, it's the kind of insanity you expect from Evil Dead taken to the extreme with spectacular effects. For me I think the elevator scene full of blood is probably one of the best scenes in the whole movie, because it generates you a lot of things like claustrophobia, disgust and it's terrifying at the same time, that shows Cronin's ability to create tension.

Now what is the problem I have with the movie or rather what I didn't like is that the performances of the children are not up to par with the others, and this is seen a lot in the most dramatic moments where you need to really believe in the emotions that these characters are feeling, and I thought it was very artificial and overacted in several important occasions. There are also too many moments where the characters make completely stupid decisions just to advance the plot or create forced suspenseful situations, like when Kassie opens the door to let her obviously possessed mom in or when they don't take advantage of clear opportunities to escape the building. The film also suffers from some moments where the pace becomes slow and you lose the momentum, this mostly happens in the middle of the movie where it doesn't seem to know where to go with the story and gets stuck for a few minutes. However these problems don't ruin the experience because when the movie works it really works well and keeps you glued to the screen waiting to see what crazy thing is going to happen next, for this I give it a 7/10, plus it's not that bad because I saw it for the second time hahaha and the ending is pretty wild and makes up for most of the flaws the movie may have in general.
