Caitlin Cronenberg debuto como directora en la película Humane del 2024 yo me imagino que esta mujer tenía toda la presión del mundo por ser la hija de David Cronenberg y la hermana de Brandon Cronenberg, nada fácil para ella pero creo que se las arregló bastante aunque la historia te deja con varios huecos y preguntas. La película trata sobre una familia que se reúne para una cena especial cuando el padre Charles interpretado por Peter Gallagher le dice a todos sus hijos que él y su esposa Dawn van a inscribirse en un programa gubernamental de eutanasia voluntaria porque el mundo se está acabando y necesitan reducir la población, pero cuando llegan los tipos para hacer el procedimento la esposa ya se largó y ahora necesitan otro cuerpo. El concepto está bien interesante porque el gobierno subcontrata compañías para que hagan estas eutanasias y les pagan por cada cuerpo que colecten, así que Bob el tipo que llega interpretado por Enrico Colantoni no se va a ir sin sus dos cuerpos prometidos, Charles ya aceptó morir pero ahora los hermanos tienen que decidir quién será el segundo cuerpo y allí empieza toda la mierda entre ellos. Todos los hermanos son un completo desastre, está Rachel interpretada por Emily Hampshire que es una estafadora que desarrolló unas medicinas que no funcionaban, Jared que es Jay Baruchel es antropólogo y trabaja para el gobierno y por supuesto defende el programa, Ashley es una actriz frustrada interpretada Alanna Bale y Noah el hermano adoptivo Sebastian Chacon que es un adicto en recuperación, cada uno tiene sus propios problemas y todos se odian.

Algo que no me gustó de esta película es que se suponía que iba a ser una crítica social sobre como el gobierno controla todo y como la gente rica siempre encuentra maneras de salvarse pero terminó siendo solo una familia de pendejos tratando de matarse unos a otros, la primera parte de la película está bien porque te va presentando a cada personaje y sus problemas pero cuando llega Bob todo se vuelve muy obvio y predecible. Es super claro que van a tratar de matar a Noah porque es el hermano adoptivo y el adicto pero cuando la cosa se pone física resulta que el tipo sabe defenderse mejor que sus otros hermanos así que se arma el saperoco. A mi parecer el mensaje de la película se pierde completamente cuando se convierte en una pelea de hermanos en lugar de ser una crítica seria sobre los programas gubernamentales y como afectan a la gente normal, no sé si Caitlin quería hacer algo como Black Mirror pero no tenía el material ni la visión para llevarlo hasta el final. Las actuaciones son normales nada del otro mundo, Peter Gallagher hace lo que puede con un personaje que es un cobarde que prefiere morir antes que ser llamado cobarde públicamente, Enrico Colantoni es divertido como Bob el tipo que hace las eutanasias pero su personaje me pareció muy cómico para una película que se supone es seria, Emily Hampshire trata de hacer a Rachel como una psicópata pero no da mucho miedo más bien da lastima. Todos estos personajes son tan detestables y la verdasd al final no importa quien muera, para mí Noah es el único medio simp+ático pero tampoco es que sea un santo.

Hablando de la parte visual la dirección de Caitlin Cronenberg es decente, algunas tomas están bien pensadas y el ritmo no se siente pesado hasta que llega la parte donde todos se vuelven locos, pero me parece que le falta experiencia para manejar este tipo de temas tan complicados sin caer en cliches, los efectos especiales estan bien y la casa donde pasa todo se ve convincente como el hogar de una familia rica. Ahora en el guion es donde la película se cae bien feo porque trata de ser una sátira negra, un thriller de supervivencia y un drama familiar disfuncional y nunca se decide por alguno. Lo peor es que hay momentos donde trata de ser divertida pero los chistes no funcionan y cuando trata de ser seria es muy forzado, esa parte del colapso ambiental y el programa de reducción de población suena interesante en teoría pero no lo desarrollan bien solo dan pedazos de información por las noticias en la television pero no se llega a entender bien como funciona parece que lo metieoron allpi solo para justificar la situacion de la familia y no como parte importante de la historia. El final no me gustó porque después de toda la pelea terminan dando el cuerpo de Ashley que muere accidentalmente y el cuerpo de la novia de Noah que matan los matones de Bob, asi que todo fue por nada porque al final no tuvieron que elegir.

Esta peli tenia potencial para ser interesante pero se quedó en la superficie de todos los temas que toca, el concepto de las familias ricas tratando de escapar de los programas gubernamentales mientras la gente pobre no tiene opción pudo haber sido una crítica social buena pero se convitió en una pelea familiar común, no me gusyó eso de terminar viendo a una familia de millonarios tratando de decidir quien va a morir como si fuera un juego macabro. Los hermanos actúan como niños malcriados incluso cuando se supone que sus vidas estan en peligro y parece que no entienden lo grave del asunto, más Jared que cree que porque tiene contactos en el gobierno lo van a salvar hasta el final. Bob como personaje esta bien actuado pero es el tipico malo que disfruta su trabajo demasiado y que tiene toda la informacion personal de la familia para chantajearlos, pero nunca entiendes como funciona ese trabajo o por que el gobierno permite esto y el programa de eutanasia nunca se explica lo suficiente, entendí que la gente se inscribe voluntariamente a cambio de dinero para sus familias pero nunca supe como es la selección o quien califica y que pasa si alguien cambia de opinión o como el gobierno maneja a las familias que se niegan a participar.

Para mí Humane se queda como una película que tenia buenas intenciones pero que no logra mostrar ninguna de sus ideas principales de manera satisfactoria, esto es chimob porque el concepto es interesante para mantenerse viendo la peli pero resulta ser tan floja que lo que me pareció fue que perdí el tiempo. La actuación de todos está bien dentro de lo que les dieron pero ninguno sobresale y Peter Gallagher merecía un mejor desarrollo de su personaje considerando que es el que genera toda la situacion. No digo que Caitlin Cronenberg no tenga potencial como directora pero si necesita trabajar más en desarrollar sus ideas antes de llevarlas a la pantalla, esta película parece un primer borrador de algo que pudo haber sido mucho mejor. Así que si estas buscando una crítica social sobre el colapso ambiental y los programas de gobierno esta no es la película corecta, creo que aquí solo verás una familia disfuncional peleando por dos horas, yo le doy un 5/10 se olvida muy rápido y no aporta nada nuevo a los temas que trata de tocar, así que lo siento por esta vez.

Caitlin Cronenberg made her directorial debut in 2024's Humane I imagine this woman had all the pressure of being David Cronenberg's daughter and Brandon Cronenberg's sister, not easy for her but I think she managed quite well even though the story leaves you with a lot of holes and questions. The movie is about a family getting together for a special dinner when father Charles played by Peter Gallagher tells all his kids that he and his wife Dawn are going to sign up for a government program of voluntary euthanasia because the world is ending and they need to reduce the population, but when the guys arrive to do the procedure the wife has already taken off and now they need another body. The concept is pretty interesting because the government subcontracts companies to do these euthanasias and they get paid for each body they collect, so Bob the guy who arrives played by Enrico Colantoni is not going to leave without his two promised bodies, Charles already agreed to die but now the brothers have to decide who will be the second body and that's where all the shit starts between them. All the siblings are a complete mess, there is Rachel played by Emily Hampshire who is a con artist who developed some drugs that didn't work, Jared who is Jay Baruchel is an anthropologist and works for the government and of course defends the program, Ashley is a frustrated actress played Alanna Bale and Noah the adopted brother Sebastian Chacon who is a recovering addict, each one has his own problems and they all hate each other.

Something I didn't like about this movie is that it was supposed to be a social critique about how the government controls everything and how rich people always find ways to save themselves but it ended up being just a family of assholes trying to kill each other, the first part of the movie is ok because it introduces you to each character and their problems but when Bob arrives everything becomes very obvious and predictable. It is super clear that they are going to try to kill Noah because he is the adoptive brother and the addict but when it gets physical it turns out that the guy knows how to defend himself better than his other brothers so the saperoco is armed. In my opinion the message of the movie is completely lost when it turns into a sibling fight instead of being a serious critique about government programs and how they affect normal people, I don't know if Caitlin wanted to do something like Black Mirror but she didn't have the material or the vision to see it through to the end. The performances are average nothing to write home about, Peter Gallagher does what he can with a character who is a coward who would rather die than be called a coward publicly, Enrico Colantoni is funny as Bob the guy who does the euthanasias but I found his character too comical for a movie that is supposed to be serious, Emily Hampshire tries to make Rachel as a psychopath but she is not very scary rather pitiful. All these characters are so obnoxious and in the end it doesn't really matter who dies, for me Noah is the only half sympathetic one but he's not a saint either.

Talking about the visuals Caitlin Cronenberg's direction is decent, some shots are well thought out and the pace doesn't feel heavy until the part where everyone goes crazy, but I think she lacks experience to handle this kind of complicated themes without falling into cliches, the special effects are ok and the house where everything happens looks convincing as the home of a rich family. Now in the script is where the film falls down badly because it tries to be a black satire, a survival thriller and a dysfunctional family drama and never decides on any of them. The worst thing is that there are moments where it tries to be funny but the jokes don't work and when it tries to be serious it is very forced, that part of the environmental collapse and the population reduction program sounds interesting in theory but they don't develop it well they just give bits of information from the news on TV but you don't really understand how it works it seems that they put it allpi just to justify the situation of the family and not as an important part of the story. I didn't like the ending because after all the fight they end up giving the body of Ashley who dies accidentally and the body of Noah's girlfriend who is killed by Bob's thugs, so it was all for nothing because in the end they didn't have to choose.

This movie had potential to be interesting but it stayed on the surface of all the issues it touches, the concept of rich families trying to escape government programs while poor people have no choice could have been a good social critique but it turned into a common family fight, I didn't like that of ending up watching a family of millionaires trying to decide who is going to die as if it was a macabre game. The brothers act like spoiled children even when their lives are supposed to be in danger and they don't seem to understand the seriousness of the matter, more Jared who thinks that because he has contacts in the government they will save him until the end. Bob as a character is well acted but he is the typical bad guy who enjoys his job too much and has all the family's personal information to blackmail them, but you never understand how that job works or why the government allows this and the euthanasia program is never explained enough, I understood that people sign up voluntarily in exchange for money for their families but I never knew how the selection is or who qualifies and what happens if someone changes their mind or how the government handles families who refuse to participate.

For me Humane remains as a movie that had good intentions but fails to show any of its main ideas in a satisfactory way, this is chimob because the concept is interesting to keep watching the movie but it turns out to be so weak that what I felt was that I wasted my time. Everyone's acting is fine within what they were given but none stand out and Peter Gallagher deserved better character development considering he's the one who generates the whole situation. I'm not saying that Caitlin Cronenberg doesn't have potential as a director but she does need to work more on developing her ideas before bringing them to the screen, this film feels like a first draft of something that could have been much better. So if you are looking for a social critique about environmental collapse and government programs this is not the right movie, I think here you will only see a dysfunctional family fighting for two hours, I give it a 5/10 it is very quickly forgotten and doesn't bring anything new to the issues it tries to touch, so I'm sorry for this one.
