Maria (2024) - Reseña (ESP/ENG)
En la película Maria 2024 de Pablo Larraín, Angelina Jolie es la protagonista y hace un trabajo increíble como Maria Callas, este director es el mismo de Jackie y Spencer que son otras dos películas que también hablan de mujeres icónicas en momentos difíciles de sus vidas y ahora cierra esta trilogía con la historia de la cantante de ópera más famosa del mundo en sus últimos días en París durante los años 70. Cuando escuché el nombre de esta peli sin saber de que trataba ni ver trailer ni nada me recordé de una viejisima, Maria Full of Grace claro esta peli no es lo que crees si te dejas llevar por el título esta peli habla del narcotráfico y es muy buena la he visto ya como unas tres veces, me recordé por el título pero obviamente no es nada parecido. Esta peli es algo muy visual y artístico, Angelina se ve espectacular y cuando estaba cantando ópera yo me quedé como hipnotizada porque la mujer realmente se preparó para este papel, tomó clases de canto por meses y se nota el esfuerzo que hizo. Lo único chimbo es que la película salta mucho en el tiempo y entre realidad y fantasía que a veces me perdí un poco, esto me pasó más en los primeros treinta minutos donde no sabía muy bien qué estaba pasando, no sabía si lo que estaba viendo era real o estaba en la cabeza de Maria.
Lo que más me gustó de Maria fue ver a Angelina Jolie actuar otra vez después de años de hacer películas más comerciales, porque aquí se nota que está dando todo de sí misma para crear este personaje que es bastante complejo, Maria Callas en la película está luchando por recuperar su voz después de años de deterioro vocal, me pareció muy triste ver a esta mujer que una vez fue la reina de la ópera desesperada y tratando de cantar aunque sea para ella misma. Los flashbacks nos muestran su relación con Aristotle Onassis, el hombre que supuestamente le prohibió cantar y también hay escenas de su juventud en Grecia durante la época de los nazi donde su madre la prostituía a ella y a su hermana para sobrevivir. Estas escenas me parecieron super fuertes y entendí por qué Maria es como es en sus últimos días, aunque me hubiese gustado que la película tratara un poco más en estos traumas y no los pasara de forma superficial. El personaje más humano de toda esta historia es Pier Francesco Favino como su mayordomo, realmente se nota que quiere a Maria a pesar de lo extravagante que es y debo decir que como personaje en si no me cayó bien Maria aunque llegué a entender su dolor me pareció que era muy caprichosa y prepotente con las personas que la cuidaban.
Yo creo que Larraín se arriesgó con esta hisotria porque la cuenta a través de una entrevista que Maria está dando a un periodista llamado Mandrax, que resulta ser el nombre de las pastillas que ella toma entonces allí caí en cuenta que todo esto está pasando en su cabeza y quizás esto puede funciona pero a veces me pareció que le faltó enfocarse en mantener la coherencia y no estar tan pendiente de la parte visual. Las escenas donde Maria está cantando en el pasado son demasiado buenas, el vestuario es increíble y la producción te hace sentir como si estuvieras en La Scala viendo a la verdadera Maria Callas y sentí pena por ella cuando está luchando por alcanzar las notas altas. Me gustó que Angelina aprendió a cantar para este papel y es obvio que no está al nivel de una cantante de ópera profesional pero su esfuerzo se nota y eso es algo que respeto y debo mencionar, bueno yo no canto bien ni en el baño por eso a mí esto me parece algo que hay que resaltar, claro ahora todo el mundo es cantante con un auto tune todo es posible pero la ópera es otro nivel. Lo que no me gustó mucho es que la película nunca termina de explicar claramente por qué Maria dejó de cantar, si fue por Onassis, por su salud o por una combinación de factores, me quedé con ganas de saber más sobre eso.
El final de Maria es lo más emotivo de toda la película, porque finalmente esta mujer acepta su destino y canta una última vez desde su apartamento en París, con toda la ciudad escuchándola en silencio. Maria colapsa después de cantar y aunque sabía desde el principio de la película que iba a ver sus últimos días, cuando llegó el momento fue bastante triste pero no fue tan devastador como debió ser y creo que es porque que la película pasó más tiempo tratando de ser artística y bella y se olvidó de hacer que realmente importara el personaje como persona. Las escenas reales de Maria Callas que aparecen durante los créditos son un recordatorio de lo increíble que era la verdadera cantante y honestamente me dieron más ganas de buscar videos de ella en YouTube que de volver a ver la película. Yo le doy un 6.5/10 a Maria y no es porque sea mala, pero sentí que es más algo de estilo que una historia realmente conmovedora. Angelina definitivamente merece reconocimiento por su actuación porque se nota que se entregó completamente al papel y la dirección de Larraín es buena pero al final me pareció que es una película más para admirar que para disfrutar.
Si te animas a verla no esperes una biografía tradicional sobre Maria Callas o una película que te explique claramente quién era esta mujer y por qué era tan importante porque te vas a quedar con ganas de más. Para mí Maria es de esas películas que respeto más de lo que me gusto, porque aunque está muy bien hecha y Angelina da una actuación buenisma, no me logré conectar emocionalmente de la manera que esperaba y aunque es muy ambiciosa a nivel artístico no es de esas películas que volvería a ver.

In the movie Maria 2024 by Pablo Larrain, Angelina Jolie is the main character and does an incredible job as Maria Callas, this director is the same of Jackie and Spencer which are two other movies that also talk about iconic women in difficult moments of their lives and now closes this trilogy with the story of the most famous opera singer in the world in her last days in Paris during the 70s. When I heard the name of this movie without knowing what it was about or see trailer or anything I remembered an old one, Maria Full of Grace of course this movie is not what you think if you go by the title this movie talks about drug trafficking and is very good I've seen it about three times, I remembered by the title but obviously it is nothing like it. This movie is something very visual and artistic, Angelina looks spectacular and when she was singing opera I was like hypnotized because the woman really prepared for this role, she took singing lessons for months and you can see the effort she made. The only thing is that the film jumps a lot in time and between reality and fantasy I sometimes got a little lost, this happened to me more in the first thirty minutes where I didn't know what was happening, I didn't know if what I was seeing was real or was in Maria's head.
What I liked most about Maria was to see Angelina Jolie acting again after years of doing more commercial movies, because here you can tell she is giving all of herself to create this character which is quite complex, Maria Callas in the movie is struggling to recover her voice after years of vocal deterioration, I found it very sad to see this woman who was once the queen of opera desperate and trying to sing even if it is for herself. Flashbacks show us her relationship with Aristotle Onassis, the man who supposedly forbade her to sing and there are also scenes from her youth in Greece during the Nazi era where her mother prostituted her and her sister to survive. I found these scenes super strong and I understood why Maria is the way she is in her last days, although I would have liked the film to deal a bit more with these traumas and not pass them over in a superficial way. The most human character in this whole story is Pier Francesco Favino as her butler, you can really tell that he loves Maria despite how extravagant he is and I must say that as a character I didn't like Maria although I came to understand her pain I found her to be very capricious and overbearing with the people who took care of her.
I think Larraín took a risk with this story because he tells it through an interview that Maria is giving to a journalist called Mandrax, which happens to be the name of the pills she takes so I realized that all this is happening in her head and maybe this can work but sometimes it seemed to me that he lacked focus on maintaining coherence and not being so dependent on the visual part. The scenes where Maria is singing in the past are too good, the costumes are amazing and the production makes you feel like you are at La Scala watching the real Maria Callas and I felt sorry for her when she is struggling to reach the high notes. I liked that Angelina learned to sing for this role and it is obvious that she is not at the level of a professional opera singer but her effort is noticeable and that is something I respect and must mention, well I don't sing well even in the bathroom so I think this is something that should be highlighted, of course now everyone is a singer with a car tune everything is possible but opera is another level. What I didn't like very much is that the film never ends up explaining clearly why Maria stopped singing, if it was because of Onassis, her health or a combination of factors, I was left wanting to know more about that.
Maria's ending is the most touching of the whole film, because finally this woman accepts her fate and sings one last time from her apartment in Paris, with the whole city listening to her in silence. Maria collapses after singing and even though I knew from the beginning of the movie that I was going to see her last days, when the moment came it was quite sad but it wasn't as devastating as it should have been and I think it's because the movie spent more time trying to be artistic and beautiful and forgot to really make the character matter as a person. The actual scenes of Maria Callas that appear during the credits are a reminder of how amazing the real singer was and honestly made me want to look up videos of her on YouTube more than re-watch the movie. I give Maria a 6.5/10 and it's not because it's bad, but I felt like it's more of a stylistic thing than a truly moving story. Angelina definitely deserves credit for her performance because you can tell she gave her all to the role and Larrain's direction is good but in the end I found it to be a film more to admire than to enjoy.
If you dare to see it, don't expect a traditional biography about Maria Callas or a film that clearly explains who this woman was and why she was so important because you will be left wanting more. For me Maria is one of those movies that I respect more than I like, because although it is very well made and Angelina gives a great performance, I did not manage to connect emotionally in the way I expected and although it is very ambitious artistically it is not one of those movies that I would watch again.
