Weapons (2025) - Reseña (ESP/ENG)
Weapons terminó siendo una película diferente a lo que yo esperaba, yo creía que iba a ser algún tipo de terror clásico con sustos y todo eso pero no, es más un terror psicológico auqnue resulta bastante interesante. Aunque para mí la peli tiene sus problemas con el ritmo en algunas partes, tiene una premisa bien interesante que me mantuvo enganchada tratando de resolver el misterio hasta que finalmente todo se reveló. Zach Cregger que es el director y escritor trae esta historia donde desaparecen unos niños de una escuela en un pueblo pequeño y muestra como eso afecta a toda la comunidad de forma perturbadora, me gustó que la película está dividida en capítulos donde cada personaje es el protagonista entonces pasan el mismo evento desde cada punto de vista. Julia Garner es Justine la maestra que todos culpan por lo que pasó, Josh Brolin es Archer un padre desesperado buscando a su hijo y varios otros personajes que van apareciendo a medida que avanza la trama y cada uno le da algo diferente a la historia. A mí me gustó eso de que sigues diferentes perspectivas y vas armando el rompecabezas poco a poco aunque puede que se sienta como que se alarga demasiado y quizás pudieron haber cortado algunas partes que no son tan importantes.
La película tarda como una hora en revelar que todo esto es obra de una bruja llamada Gladys que la verdad se parece al payaso Pennywise, ella usa magia oscura para controlar a las personas del pueblo para curarse de alguna enfermedad terminal, absorbiendo la energía vital de los niños que tiene encerrados en un sótano comiendo sopa todo el día. Lo que no me gustó de Weapons es que pasa mucho tiempo construyendo este misterio y lo pone a uno a pensar en teorías locas sobre lo que está pasando, yo pensé que iba a ser sobre un tiroteo escolar encubierto después que vi la escena del sueño con el rifle gigante en el cielo yo creía que iba por ahí pero luego resulta que no tiene nada que ver con eso, también pensé que era una vaina extraterrestre con todos los niños corriendo al mismo tiempo a la misma hora como zombies al mismo lugar. Cuando se descubre que es brujería y vudú y toda esa mierda paranormal fue como un alivio y una decepción al mismo tiempo porque por un lado está bien hecho y tiene sentido dentro del contexto de la película pero por otro lado sentí que me hicieron perder tiempo con todas esas pistas falsas que no llevaban a ninguna parte. Los actores klo hacen bien auqnue Julia Garner está en un papel que no le permite brillar tanto como debería tomando en cuenta que es una de las actrices principales y tiene el peso de la película encima, Josh Brolin también lo hace bien interpretando a un padre desesperado que cruza todas las líneas tratando de encontrar a su hijo, ignora a la policía que es bien incompetente.
Aunque el verdadero protagonista es Alex el único niño que no desapareció de la clase y resulta que el sabía todo desde el principio porque la bruja Gladys es supuestamente su tía y llegó a vivir con su familia diciendo que estaba enferma y necesitaba un lugar donde quedarse, ella toma el control de los padres de Alex convirtiéndolos en zombies obedientes y amenaza al niño diciéndole que puede hacer que se coman el uno al otro si el dice algo a alguien. El actor que hace de Alex esta increíble y eso que es un niño pequeño actuando escenas bien fuertes donde tiene que alimentar a sus papás y a todos los niños secuestrados en un sótano y aguantarse la bruja loca esa viviendo con el, hay una escena donde Gladys hace que los padres agarren tenedores y empiecen a apuñalarse la cara ellos mismos solo para demostrarle a Alex que ella va en serio con sus amenazas y esa vaina es perturbadora. Lo que no puedo dejar de decir es que la policía del pueblo es bien inútil durante toda la investigación, tienen a un niño que está actuando raro comprando como 30 latas de sopa todos los días caminando solo por el pueblo y nadie piensa que tal vez deberían investigar las coda más a fondo, Justine la maestra va a la casa de Alex y ve a los papás sentados en la oscuridad como maniquies sin hacer nada y su primera reacción es llamar al director en lugar de llamar a la policía inmediatamente eso no tiene ningún sentido y más si está preocupada por la seguridad del niño y sus padres.
El final es donde la peli pierde un poco el toque para mi porque después de construir toda esa tensión y misterio todo se resuelve muy rápido es como que tarda mucho la primera parte y al final tod se terina en cinco minutios. Justine y Archer trabajan juntos y van a la casa de Alex donde son atacados por el policia y el drogadicto poseído, que se supone debe ser una escena que intenta ser tensa pero termina siendo casi comica. La parte donde Archer baja al sotano y ve a todos los niños incluyendo a su hijo debería ser el momento emocional más fuerte de toda la película pero pasó muy rápido. Alex termina siendo el héroe cuando le devuelve su hechizo a la bruja de Gladys y hace que la persigan los niños esa parte fue satisfactoria después de todo el infierno que hizo pasar esa vieja loxa, la ironía de que ella amenazara con hacer que los padres de Alex se comieran el uno al otro y termina siendo comida ella misma por los niños es bastante bueno y me parece que fue la mejor decisión que tomo el director en este final.
Lo triste fue que después de que matan a la bruja los papás de Alex siguieron en un estado de trance y no le vi la explicación lógica a eso o al menos pensé que iban a volver a la normalidad. Al final de la película se dice que esto paso hace dos años en su pueblo y que algunos niños incluso volvieron a hablar otra vez lo cual muestra que no todos se recuperaron completamente del trauma y la posesión y eso es bastante oscuro si lo piensas bien, esto me hixo pensar que tal vez algo de la bruja todavía vive dentro de ellos y no los deja recuperarse bien pero bueno esto es simple especulación mía. En general Weapons es interesante y tiene buenos momentos pero mezclados con decisiones cuestionables que bajan la calidad del producto final, tiene una premisa interesanre, buenas actuaciones mi favorita fue la de Alex, algunos sustos son buenos y siempre se creó esa atmósfera de tensión que te mantiene pendiente durante toda la peli pero al mismo tiempo tiene problemas de ritmo, personajes innecesarios que no aportan nada importante, fallas en las reglas de la magia y un final apresurado, yo le doy un 7/10 a pesar de sus fallas porque la versdad me dejó pensando días después de verla y eso es algo importante.

Weapons ended up being a different movie than what I expected, I thought it was going to be some kind of classic horror with jump scares and all that but no, it's more psychological horror although it turns out pretty interesting. Although for me the movie has its problems with the pacing in some parts, it has a really interesting premise that kept me hooked trying to solve the mystery until everything was finally revealed. Zack Cregger who is the director and writer brings this story where some kids disappear from a school in a small town and shows how that affects the whole community in a disturbing way, I liked that the movie is divided into chapters where each character is the protagonist so they go through the same event from each point of view. Julia Garner is Justine the teacher that everyone blames for what happened, Josh Brolin is Archer a desperate father looking for his son and several other characters that appear as the plot progresses and each one gives something different to the story. I liked that you follow different perspectives and you piece together the puzzle little by little although it might feel like it drags on too long and maybe they could have cut some parts that aren't that important.
The movie takes like an hour to reveal that all of this is the work of a witch named Gladys who honestly looks like Pennywise the clown, she uses dark magic to control the town's people to cure herself of some terminal illness, absorbing the life energy of the kids she has locked up in a basement eating soup all day. What I didn't like about Weapons is that it spends a lot of time building this mystery and makes you think about crazy theories about what's happening, I thought it was going to be about a covered-up school shooting after I saw the dream scene with the giant rifle in the sky I thought it was going that way but then it turns out it has nothing to do with that, I also thought it was an alien thing with all the kids running at the same time at the same hour like zombies to the same place. When it's discovered that it's witchcraft and voodoo and all that paranormal shit it was like a relief and a disappointment at the same time because on one hand it's well done and makes sense within the context of the movie but on the other hand I felt like they made me waste time with all those false clues that didn't lead anywhere. The actors do it well although Julia Garner is in a role that doesn't let her shine as much as she should considering she's one of the main actresses and has the weight of the movie on her, Josh Brolin also does it well playing a desperate father who crosses all the lines trying to find his son, he ignores the police who are pretty incompetent.
Although the real protagonist is Alex the only kid who didn't disappear from the class and it turns out he knew everything from the beginning because the witch Gladys is supposedly his aunt and came to live with his family saying she was sick and needed a place to stay, she takes control of Alex's parents turning them into obedient zombies and threatens the kid telling him she can make them eat each other if he says anything to anyone. The actor who plays Alex is incredible and he's a little kid acting in really strong scenes where he has to feed his parents and all the kidnapped kids in a basement and put up with that crazy witch living with him, there's a scene where Gladys makes the parents grab forks and start stabbing themselves in the face just to show Alex that she's serious with her threats and that shit is disturbing. What I can't stop saying is that the town's police are really useless during the whole investigation, they have a kid who's acting weird buying like 30 cans of soup every day walking alone around town and nobody thinks that maybe they should investigate things more thoroughly, Justine the teacher goes to Alex's house and sees the parents sitting in the dark like mannequins doing nothing and her first reaction is to call the principal instead of calling the police immediately that doesn't make any sense especially if she's worried about the kid's and his parents' safety.
The ending is where the movie loses its touch a bit for me because after building all that tension and mystery everything gets resolved too fast it's like the first part takes too long and at the end everything ends in five minutes. Justine and Archer work together and go to Alex's house where they're attacked by the cop and the possessed drug addict, which is supposed to be a scene that tries to be tense but ends up being almost comical. The part where Archer goes down to the basement and sees all the kids including his son should be the strongest emotional moment of the whole movie but it happened too fast. Alex ends up being the hero when he returns the spell to the witch Gladys and makes the kids chase her that part was satisfying after all the hell that crazy old lady put him through, the irony that she threatened to make Alex's parents eat each other and ends up being eaten herself by the kids is pretty good and I think it was the best decision the director made in this ending.
The sad part was that after they kill the witch Alex's parents stayed in a trance state and I didn't see the logical explanation for that or at least I thought they were going to go back to normal. At the end of the movie it says this happened two years ago in their town and that some kids even started talking again which shows that not everyone fully recovered from the trauma and possession and that's pretty dark if you think about it, this made me think that maybe something of the witch still lives inside them and won't let them recover properly but well this is just my speculation. Overall Weapons is interesting and has good moments but mixed with questionable decisions that lower the quality of the final product, it has an interesting premise, good performances my favorite was Alex's, some scares are good and they always created that atmosphere of tension that keeps you watching during the whole movie but at the same time it has pacing problems, unnecessary characters that don't contribute anything important, flaws in the magic rules and a rushed ending, I give it a 7/10 despite its flaws because the truth is it left me thinking days after watching it and that's something important.
