[Movie] An exceptional gift (2017) When love can do anything
I just saw a touching film where a man has a seven-year-old niece in his care. She was entrusted to him by her mother before she committed suicide. The girl turns out to be gifted, and her uncle wants her to live a normal life away from intellectualism and an overwhelming scientific environment; he just wants her to be a normal child.
But the grandmother wants to prevent the girl from being under her son's guardianship and does everything possible to take custody away from him. The film is based on their dispute over custody of the girl. The uncle will fight for her with the sole objective of taking care of her, protecting her, and ensuring she has a normal childhood. However, the grandmother only wants custody to showcase the girl as a brilliant mind.
As the plot unfolds, we learn the reasons for the girl's mother's suicide. I suppose she was living under immense pressure from her mother to solve a math problem she hadn't been able to figure out. Faced with this pressure, she decided to take her own life, but not before entrusting her brother with custody and begging him to raise her like a normal child, with the happy childhood she herself had longed for but couldn't have because of her mother's pressure.
The brother initially agreed to take the girl out of obligation, but little by little he grew fond of his niece and began to raise her. The girl and her uncle developed a very beautiful father-daughter relationship.
The grandmother initiated a legal battle, and both were forced to agree to place the girl in a foster home for her well-being. However, it all turns out to be a farce: the new adoptive parents are conspiring with the grandmother to have her live next door so they can maintain total control over the little girl. Upon realizing this, the uncle decides to break a promise he made to his sister. Before she died, she had given him the manuscript containing the solution to the mathematical problem she had worked on her entire life, a problem for which her mother had exerted so much pressure, asking him to publish it only after her death. But driven by the looming fear of losing his niece, and in order to win her back, he gives the manuscript to the grandmother so she can reveal it to the world and achieve the fame she so desperately craved.
The grandmother accepted the proposal because it was the only thing that truly interested her: solving that math problem at all costs. First, she tried through her daughter, and then through her granddaughter, taking advantage of the little girl's exceptional talent for mathematics.
A wonderful drama that helps you understand the role parents play in their children's lives and how our decisions influence them. A movie every parent should see. I highly recommend it.
