What is the likely connection between an art dealer, a hitman and a baker? I'll tell you soon enough. Most often, we watch films and want the protagonist to win while the villain goes down. Like ninety percent of film plots are like this. Then I saw this recent release featuring these talented actors: Samuel L. Jackson, Joe Manganiello and Uma Thurman and I knew I would enjoy it. They are A-list actors and their films are never boring. After seeing the bad guys in The Kill Room (2023) walk free, I nod in admiration that this film is worth watching.

This American dark comedy thriller/mystery focuses on an art dealer, Patrice (played by Uma Thurman) who is broke. Her gallery is dying. No collector is buying any of her displayed pieces until Gordon (played by Samuel L. Jackson), a Black Jewish deli and bakery owner in league with a mob, approaches her with an offer to launder money for them in exchange for her cut.

Patrice explains that she can't launder money unless there's art involved. Gordon asks their hitman, Reggie (played by Joe Manganiello) to make paintings for Patrice to keep in her gallery and not sell them. The deal is struck. Reggie paints under the alias 'The Bagman' and it's hung in the gallery. Cheques bearing sizable sums are exchanged between the parties until Patrice's intern posts pictures of Reggie's paintings and they become a sensation. The mob leaders are unhappy. How will Patrice get out of the situation without destroying her reputation?

Review

Though this movie started slow, it picks up pace when the art dealer becomes the money launderer. I enjoyed the plot because it's nothing complex but an unusual one—the bad guys make it out alive while offering the worst guys on the altar of justice. It's like a game of survival between the bad guys. The smart ones make it out alive and walk free while the terrible ones are dealt with.

The storytelling is great and so are the visuals. The most interesting part of the movie for me was the finale. Director Nicol Paone gives the audience (in the film and theatres) a stunning show of bloodlust performance. The anticipation was so high and the delivery satisfactory that the art lovers gave them a loud ovation. I think that part was clever and a fine way to end the film.

The cast's performance is wonderful and entertaining. Uma Thurman walks, talks and speaks like a principled art dealer until the arrival of the Bagman. She's convincing and has great chemistry with Joe Manganiello. For a moment, I expected the two actors to have a sort of fling but I'm glad that didn't happen. The focus was purely on art and making money.

Samuel L. Jackson delivers excellently on the comedy part with witty remarks and some vulgarities. Together with Uma Thurman and Joe Manganiello, they embody their characters in a relatable way. We see them as flawed people in the underworld, fighting by all means necessary, for their survival. Though Samuel Jackson wasn't given much screen time, he still shone through as only he can.

Overall, The Kill Room is a fine dark comedy thriller and worth watching. There are no dull moments in the film. I'll give it 3 stars out of 5.
