Grief, love and second chances

The popular day set aside to celebrate love—Valentine's Day—is past until next year, of course, yet imagine my surprise when I see the trailer of a fine romance-comedy featuring a star cast: Priyanka Chopra, Sam Heughan and the iconic Celine Dion! Recently I read that Dion cancelled her concert tour because of health issues which is sad. Seeing her in this movie fanned the flames of love I've always had for her music. I believe most romantics will agree with me.

Love Again (2023) is a rom-com of second chances. The opening scene reveals Mira Ray (played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas), a children’s book illustrator, meeting her boyfriend, John (played by Arinze Kene). They kiss and she says goodbye only to lose him in a car accident right before her eyes. She is devastated and heartbroken. Two years later, John's phone is recycled and given to Rob Burns (played by Sam Heughan), a music critic for a media organisation as a work phone.

To help with her grief, Mira begins to talk to John by sending messages on the phone. Rob reads them and gradually begins to fall in love with the writer. He finds out about her love for Orpheus And Eurydice, and goes to the opera a few times until he finally meets her. They start to date and spend the night together. Mira discovers that Rob had John's phone all along and had read her messages. Will she forgive Rob for lying to her?

Review

The plot of this film is lovely and enchanting. It follows the usual route of romcoms but there's more romance than comedy. It makes us root for Mira's love connection with Rob Burns while also wondering what it could have been like with John, her ex-boyfriend.

The cast of this film is impressive. I am enthralled by the duo performance of Priyanka Chopra and Sam Heughan because they are fascinating together. Seeing them on the film poster, I wondered how their chemistry would be. It turned out a little awkward at first but in no time, they put forward their acting skills and made their audience fall in love with them.

I saw a bit of the same awkwardness with Priyanka and Arinze Kene at the beginning, most likely because Arinze was thrust into the film just like that. He already existed and sadly viewers did not get to know him. The first scene was about him and Mira, then an accident happens and he dies.

Priyanka did a great job filling her viewers in on Arinze's character with her grief performance. It was excellent. I'm sure like most people that saw this film, it was Celine Dion's character that was the most compelling. I loved Priyanka since the spy thriller series, Quantico and Sam Heughan from the historical drama, Outlander. But I was more interested in the iconic singer.

Celine Dion plays herself as she prepares to go on a new tour. Her interaction with Rob Burns, a music critic, is interesting because she tells a story that some of her fans may not know about her marriage with her real-life husband, René. I don't know if the things she said in the movie are true but Celine portrays the part of a woman who truly loved. Through her experience, she passes words of wisdom and advice to Rob Burns and Mira Ray, leading to their love connection. Those scenes are sweet and heartfelt.

The only part I would fault this film for is the fast pace. The character development is great but the storytelling is a bit hurried. There are scenes where it seems the cast is a bit awkward with each other. The chemistry between the two leads would have fallen short or been sloppy if not for their acting skills.

I'm not sure if it's the time allotted for film production but everything feels rushed. For a movie that features a popular singer whom the world relates with love, I believe the director and screenwriters should have devoted more time and resources to ensuring it turns out perfectly. If they did, this film could have been a classic and rated side by side with the popular, The Notebook.

I very much enjoyed the soundtracks which were mainly Celine Dion's love songs. There was also the feature of the opera, Orpheus And Eurydice by Christoph Willibald Gluck. The visuals and editing are not bad and the way they interlaced Priyanka and Sam's scenes with the soundtracks is delightful.

Overall, Love Again is a delightful film worth watching. I'll rate it 3.9 stars out of 5.
