Favourite Movie About Royals —The Young Victoria (2009)

I'm sure you will agree with me that the life of royals holds a certain mystery and appeal that gains the world's interest. Most people want to know how the royals live, what they think of every morning when they wake up, what drives them, if they are happy being wealthy etc.

This is mostly because we aspire to live like them. Well, I am included among the number of those obsessed with the royals, particularly the British royals. Sorry, I'm an Anglophile.

One of my favourite royals movies is The Young Victoria (2009), mostly because Queen Victoria is played by Emily Blunt, one of my favourite actresses. In this movie, Ms Blunt splendidly brought to life the rise of Queen Victoria to the throne and her love life. I mean, who doesn't enjoy a heartwarming romance story even though the ending may not be what we want?

The movie depicts a noble, young Princess barely eighteen, bullied by her parents only to become the monarch of the greatest empire ever known some few days later after her uncle, King Williams died. With her position, power and love of an equally young, nobleman, she rises above domestic and public abuse to become one of the greatest monarchs.

I love how this royal was depicted in this movie: a normal, sheltered girl with crushes who writes love letters to her pen pal.

She resented her parents for her lack of independence and freedom. The movie further explored how the Queen stood strong in the face of the activities of the royal court and English politics involving the parliament, the prime minister and the throne.

The storytelling, the cast, the costumes and the cinematography of this movie are reasons why I love it. The screenplay was written by Julian Fellowes. I have watched other British period dramas written by some other screenwriters but Fellowes' work is just the best.

There is a sophistication and finesse to his plays and movies become outstanding when he directs them as well. Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age are some of his beautiful works.

The location and settings are lovely and picturesque. The views of castles, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey are some of the reasons English architecture is unique and a thing of beauty.

I enjoy the passion of this movie and would definitely recommend it to historical drama lovers.
