Review Of About Fate (2022)

When I am impressed with an actor's performance in a movie, I look forward to watching him or her in other movies. I first watched Emma Roberts (Julia Roberts' niece, in case you are trying to make the connection) in the horror anthology, American Horror Story and have since admired her.

On Sunday, in a relaxed mood, I searched for something heartwarming to watch and settled on About Fate (2022), a rom-com featuring Emma Roberts and Thomas Mann as its main cast. The movie begs the question of whether there can be coincidences in love and if it can be called "fate".

Margot (played by Emma Roberts), a real estate agent, meets Griffin (played by Thomas Mann), a public defender, at a restaurant after they were both disappointed by their partners. Margot was hoping for a proposal but instead got a breakup while Griffin proposed but his girlfriend asked him to do it better at the New Year Eve's party.

Coincidentally, Margot and Griffin live in the same housing estate. He gets drunk and crashes into her bed after finding the key under the flower pot. She finds him in her apartment, threatens to call 911 and eventually they come to an understanding that he will escort her to her sister's wedding as her boyfriend.

At the wedding, when Margot's real boyfriend shows up, things go awry. Everyone becomes confused as to who the real boyfriend is.

Fall In Love In Two Days?

This is one of those cheesy or ordinary rom-coms that you can watch to pass the time. There was nothing remarkable about it which was kind of disappointing for me since I'd looked forward to Emma Roberts' performance in it. But it was not bad.

But realistically, is it possible for two people to connect and fall in love in just two days of meeting each other? Yes, fate can work to bring people together but not make them fall in love that fast. On the other hand, I remember there's the 'love at first sight' experience which may make sense but not in the case of Margot and Griffin. They saw each other for the first time outside the restaurant but were not starstruck.

It was little coincidences like being in the same restaurant, disappointment from their partners, living in the same housing unit, their love for the 1961 movie Breakfast At Tiffany's, having cats with similar colouring and the tattoo of a Griffin on Margot's back that made the star couple conclude they are made for each other. I doubt if this would work in reality but it was convincing enough in the movie.

Attempt At Comedy

Remember the part where I said it's a rom-COM? Well, the cast made some attempts at funny scenes but it wasn't humorous. It seemed more like the actors making a fool of themselves or trying to be funny. In my opinion, they could dispense with those scenes and stick to romance only and the movie would be okay.

Overall, the movie is easy and predictable if you have watched a good number of rom-coms. The cast performance is average. I enjoyed the chemistry between the lead actors and the visual effects are not bad. As I said, this movie is an easy rom-com to pass the time.

Reading your review, I think this movie is going to be enjoyable and relaxing to watch. I will add it to my watchlist for this weekend. This movies reminds me of a song titled 'I found by Amber Run'. It's all about finding love where it wasn't suppose to be. I enjoyed reading your review. Thank you for sharing!.
