After I watched the thrilling mystery, Enola Holmes (2020) which I reviewed a few days ago, I was excitedly looking forward to another two hours plus of mystery, fun, humour and action. I'm happy to write that I was not disappointed but more impressed. The Holmes mystery flicks keep getting better and from the way this sequel ended, there are good indications that another sequel will be released soon.

This sequel continues a few years from the first film and focuses yet again on Enola Holmes and her efforts to start her detective agency. Set in the Victorian era, no one was willing to employ a young lady (who should be in a finishing school) to execute a job that could prove dangerous. Some potential clients who stop by her office request her brother, Sherlock Holmes, instead.

Enola gives up and is packing her things into a box when a client, a young girl, steps into her office and asks her to help find her missing sister. Our young detective then goes undercover with her client as a new employee in the Match factory where the missing girl worked before she disappeared.

In her investigations, she discovers a murdered match girl and finds herself in the sights of a murderer bent on killing for some incriminating documents. While on the run, she bumps into Sherlock. They discover how their cases were connected and how dangerously close to death they were. Will they survive in their joint investigations?

Review

This is one delightful mystery I recommend for the family to watch. Though it is action-packed and fascinating, it delivers an inspiring message especially for young girls to find the courage to be themselves, strive for independence and if possible, fight for what they want. We see this play out in the fight of the Match Girls against their employers for better working conditions.

Like the previous, Millie Bobby Brown is the heart of the film’s wit and joy and her acting is excellent. There are fewer scenes of Millie facing the camera to explain herself and more attention is given to action and mystery. The plot, settings, and twists are delightful. The visual effects are outstanding as well.

Once again, the cast of the sequel is impressive and so were their performances. The addition of new faces like Hannah Dodd, David Thewlis and Sharon Duncan-Brewster made the film more thrilling. I'll say the villain, Grail, is very annoying which means he played his part well and Mira Troy was superb. These characters gave Enola and Sherlock quite a hard task figuring out their plans.

I thoroughly enjoyed Millie and Henry Cavill's scenes together. They share significant amounts of screen time in this film than they did in the previous. Their chemistry is smooth, likeable and the way they solve the mysteries in their own ways are worth watching. This time around, Mycroft Holmes (played by Sam Claflin) in the first film is not among the cast in this sequel and we do not miss him at all. His character was not so likeable in the first film anyway.

Millie's performance with the handsome Lord Tewkesbury (played by Louis Partridge) was romantic.

In the previous film, the director gave us a tease about these two and in this sequel we watch their young love bloom. The two characters declare their love for each other and actually share a kiss. The scene was swooning and romantic.

Overall, Enola Holmes 2 is watchworthy. I give it 4.6 stars out of 5. If you want a delightful family film to see on a weekend or any day, then I recommend you watch this sequel.
