Lately, I've been in the mood for comedy movies, something light, fun and easy to enjoy. And of course as someone who occasionally falls into the "watching entire movies in parts on Tiktok" trap. (Anha I've done that before, no shame 😂). I stumbled upon She's the man, a 2006 teen comedy starring Amanda Bynes. Lets get started..

The Plot
Voila Hastings(Bynes) is a football-loving high school girl whose world is turned upside when her school cuts the girls' team. But here's the twist: Her twin brother Sebastian, ditches Illyria boarding school to compete in a music contest in London with his band and begs Voila to cover for him with their divorced parents. (Sibling favours😉).

But Viola? She sees this as the perfect opportunity. Instead of just making excuses, she transforms into Sebastian with the help of stylist BFF Paul. Her transformation is a comedic masterpiece, she wears a wig with glued on sideburns and clothes from her brother's laundry. Her squad becomes her boy bootcamp for dude-etiquette drilling her on everything from voice-deepening to awkward guys mannerisms.

The messy, Hilarious Triangle(Or should I say Square?)
Things gets complicated fast as

  • Sebastian(Voila) becomes roommates with Duke( the dreamy Football star who's totally her type).
  • Catches feelings for Duke while he is clueless she's actually a girl
  • Gets Olivia (Dukes crush) falling for her thinking she's a guy
  • Deals with Monique ( Sebastian clingy ex gf who is still in denial).
  • Avoids Malcolm an annoying guy who's also obsessed with Olivia and now hates Sebastian(Voila).

The Chaos is next level

There's a scene at a carnival where Viola has to keep switching between her real self and her Sebastian disguise- lol pure comedic gold 🫴🏾.that scene was fire 😂

Rival Schools and Big game Drama

Of course Voila's old school Cornwall is Illyria biggest rival and her ex Justin is on the team and yes he plays the final match, awkwardness guaranteed. The build up to the final soccer showdown is packed with tension, hilarious misunderstandings and some surprisingly heartfelt moments.

Why I loved this movie despite my initial doubts

I'll admit, I thought 2006? This might be outdated or cringe, but I was SO wrong. The humour holds up perfectly. And Amanda Bynes performance is legendary, she delivers a masterclass in comedic acting nailing every note whiles keeping voila's emotional moments feel raw and real. Plus romance is cute without being cheesy and friendships feels real.

Final thoughts.
If you are looking for a "feel good, laugh out loud" movie with a touch of romance "She's the man" is a must watch. It's one of those movies you get hooked on at that start even if you technically watched it halfway on tiktok 😂

Thabks for reading. 😊
