I personally believe that composing or choosing the right music for a movie is a very important job. Because the film music can change or tamper the entire tone and feel of a film. The right music for each scene help to bring it to life.

As a movie lover there are certain things I've come to realize about movie. Apart from being a means by which I relax or entertain myself movies have a great effects too on our attitude, feeling emotions and most times movies are educating too.

Now recently I noticed that the soundtrack in movies has its special effects. For a movie to either get your eye teary or your adrenaline pumping, believe me the soundtrack played a whole lot of part in it.

Music as we know has astonishing and surprising effects on humans and their psychology. It can either boost immune systems, reduce seizures, evoke memories, and even assist in repairing brain damage.

According to University of California Berkeley researchers, the subjective experience of music falls within thirteen feelings: amusement, joy, eroticism, beauty, relaxation, sadness, dreaminess, triumph, anxiety, scariness, annoyance, defiance, and feeling pumped up.

Okay look at it this way.

At times in some occasions we aren't even seeing a movie but just the songs banging on our speakers. You'll agree with me that some songs get you happy and dancing but some can literally change your mood and you become emotional. That is exactly how it is when the right song is selected in a movie.

How did I understand this? Just last week a video was played online by a friend and it had heal the world by Michael Jackson as a soundtrack. I found myself crying but later in the week I saw the same video but this time no music was added to it and I realized that I didn't really feel a thing much as I did earlier. There were no tears. Then I got to realize that it was the music added to it that did the magic and got me teary.

Now I did some research and found that there are two major components of film music: the score and the soundtrack.

What is a film score?
A film score is simply the original music that accompanies a film. In most cases, movie music is written by a film composer hired for the production. The movie score helps to heightened the film's emotion, creating an aural mood for each scene, along with sound effects and dialogue. A film score is part of a film's soundtrack and can refer to any musical composition ranging from climactic moments to the background music.

What is a soundtrack?
Soundtracks also known as an original soundtrack (OST) typically feature vocal music and compilation of songs and sounds that comprise all of the film's music. This musical selection can include original songs or pre-existing songs that played during the film or were specifically recorded for the film. Unlike film scores, the soundtrack may feature music that was not recorded for the film but fits its overall mood and tone.

Beautiful effects of soundtrack on a viewer movie experience

Have you ever been watching a horror movie and turned the sound off? If you're a real good movie freak you'll understand the above experience. That added tension and excitement that goes with it, almost if not all instantly go away. You might still be scared, but it’s not as intense as with the sound. You know why? It is mainly because the creepy scores which are used to heighten, build suspense and jump scare you. It shows that the soundtrack has a notable effect on the mood you are supposed to have as a viewer.

In the movies, music serves as a connection between the audio and the visual. It lets the audience know what they are supposed to feel, except and when.

Example, If a couple just walked out of their wedding, the director might pick a beautiful romantic song to play over the scene and you'll find yourself smiling, aww-ing and most times wanting to fall in love . That is because that particular song brought out the romance, the loving-ness of that scene, and at the same time gave you a clue of how the couple in the movie is feeling. A happy feeling.

Now let's use another logic. Imagine the same scene being played with music that sounds or was haunting, immediately you're gonna feel that something bad will happen or that the marriage is a bad thing or that the couples doesn't love themselves. It would change the entire feel of that particular scene. That's the effect of the soundtrack.

Most times we really don't pay attention to the soundtrack. The soundtrack is what gives us that experience, adrenaline rush as movie lovers.

Bad movies are made more tolerable with an interesting soundtrack, and good movies are made that much more better.
