Apocalypse Z (2024): The Beginning Of The End

At first, I mistook this movie for World War Z because of the “Z” in the title. I thought maybe either of them was a prequel or a sequel. But when I hopped in to watch Apocalypse Z, I found it to be a very different movie entirely, although it shares some similarities with others in its genre.

Again, I'm a very big fan of zombie movies. I love to see detailed explanations about the genesis of the virus and people’s reactions to it.

This movie started well, with a glimpse of life before the pandemic. Manel, the main character, lost his wife, and even after a year, the memories of her never left him. He was struggling to survive the trauma, living alone with his dear cat, Luculo. When the virus broke out, all hell was let loose. Initially, they thought it was going to be something like the COVID-19 pandemic where a simple quarantine would be all that was needed—but this situation was far beyond their expectations.

A real survival mode was switched on, and I love how the movie gave attention to small but important details—especially how people stormed malls to cart away food items because they had no idea how long the situation would last. You don't call that stealing, do you? No!

Manel tried to play the one-man hero by staying put, even after announcements were made instructing people to vacate and go to the refuge centers that had been provided. He was managing to survive until the infected gave him a serious run for his life.

He had some wild, crazy moments—especially a mad chase with his cat—and he managed to survive. Eventually, he stumbled upon a group of people surviving on a boat out at sea.

At this point, I knew it was going to be a battle, because from zombie movies I’ve watched, most times, the biggest threat to survival isn't the dead but the living. Just as we predicted, Manel didn’t last long before a fight broke out. One of the group members, Viktor, joined him to fight for justice, and that’s how they both ended up running for their lives again.

It continues like that, from one survival scene to another.

Opinions, Criticism, and Ratings

I must say, I really loved the behavior and reactions of the zombies in this movie. They were far more dangerous than the ones in shows like The Walking Dead. These ones were completely insane in the sense that the virus had infused a gene in them that made them run very fast.

They were also quite intelligent, able to climb fences just to continue their chase. The craziest scene of them all, in my opinion, was when they were pushing Manel on a bike. Mehn, their speed was almost equal to that of the bike! They could be killed too, and I liked that aspect.

The character development for all of them wasn’t bad at all. They all did excellently, and I must give a special mention to Luculo, the cat...very talkative.

Now to the storyline. This is where I think they got it wrong—there was no explanation of the cause of the virus, and there was also no conclusion to the story. Oh yes, there are talks of having a sequel, but I honestly don’t think that’s going to happen. We’ve seen many movies like this that end in suspense and never return. World War Z, which I mentioned earlier, falls into this category. It sucks a lot to watch a movie without a defined ending.

With all this considered, I would rate it a 6/10. A sequel is surely going to make It 10/10 but for now, let it remain like that.😎

Thanks for reading.
