¡Hola Hola Comunidad! ✨, después de una mala racha de películas románticas vistas en diciembre, comenzamos el año con buen pie, pues la película de la que hablaremos hoy era uno de esos estrenos que llevaba tiempo esperando, desde que se anunció y ví el primer tráiler sabía que los valores tradicionales estaban por regresar, en ese momento no sabía que se trataba de una adaptación de libro, y mucho menos que dicho libro era de semejante autora, no obstante para juzgar bien la película decidí no leer el libro, por lo que solo detallaré aspectos relacionados exclusivamente al producto audiovisual que nos trajo Netflix, así que sin más que añadir vamos con la reseña de Gente que Conocemos en Vacaciones 💖🏖️.
Hello Hello Community! ✨, After a string of disappointing romantic films in December, we started the year off on the right foot, as the film we'll be discussing today was one of those releases I had been eagerly awaiting. From the moment it was announced and I saw the first trailer, I knew that traditional values were making a comeback. At the time, I didn't know it was a book adaptation, let alone that the book was by such an author. However, in order to judge the film fairly, I decided not to read the book, so I will only detail aspects related exclusively to the audiovisual product brought to us by Netflix. Without further ado, let's get on with the review of People We Meet on Vacation 💖🏖️.
💖 SINOPSIS || SYNOPSIS 🏖️
Poppy y Alex han sido mejores amigos desde hace años, para sorpresa de ellos y de todos pues parecen sacados de dos mundos diferentes, mientras Poppy es caótica, aventurera y de espíritu libre, Alex es ordenado, meticuloso y amante de la rutina. Sin importar qué tan alejados estén, han prometido siempre reencontrarse para hacer viajes en vacaciones, una semana al año es suficiente para recordar y vivir experiencias nuevas que hagan de su amistad cada vez más y más fuerte… o quizás más débil. Porque cuando un momento de quiebre toca a Poppy, sus acciones ponen a tambalear el delicado equilibrio de ésta amistad, y lo que para el resto era obvio, para ellos siempre ha sido una posibilidad incómoda que no se atreven a afrontar ¿Realmente podrían ser una pareja ideal?
Poppy and Alex have been best friends for years, much to their surprise and everyone else's, as they seem to come from two different worlds. While Poppy is chaotic, adventurous and free-spirited, Alex is organised, meticulous and loves routine. No matter how far apart they are, they have promised to always meet up again for holiday trips. One week a year is enough to remember and live new experiences that make their friendship stronger and stronger... or perhaps weaker. Because when a turning point comes for Poppy, her actions shake the delicate balance of their friendship, and what was obvious to everyone else has always been an uncomfortable possibility for them that they dare not face. Could they really be an ideal couple?

Las buenas costumbres han regresado a las RomCom, no hay otra manera de empezar ésta reseña que dejando claro que así es como se hace una comedia romántica 🤣. Como bien dije al inicio, ésta película es una adaptación del libro homónimo de Emily Henry, y sé por otros que no es del todo fiel a la historia original, sin embargo como yo decidí no leer el libro antes de ver la película, realmente no puedo dar fé de ésto que estoy comentando, por lo que solo me centraré en juzgar éste producto de forma independiente.
Honestamente desde el inicio sabía que esta película me gustaría, pese a que el cliché de Friends to Lovers a mí no me gusta porque siempre hay un tercero que queda mal parado, la elección del cast protagónico fue una conquista inmediata para mí, pues a ambos actores los conozco de proyectos anteriores en donde justamente había destacado su actuación por lo bien llevada que estaba, teniendo así a un Tom Blyth que representó a la perfección al joven Snow y a Emily Bader siendo la elocuente Jane…, así que de entrada sabía que al menos la actuación me la iba a creer.
Good manners have returned to RomComs. There is no other way to begin this review than by making it clear that this is how a romantic comedy should be done 🤣. As I said at the beginning, this film is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Emily Henry, and I know from others that it is not entirely faithful to the original story. However, as I decided not to read the book before seeing the film, I cannot really vouch for what I am saying, so I will just focus on judging this product independently.
Honestly, I knew from the start that I would like this film, even though I don't like the Friends to Lovers cliché because there is always a third person who ends up in a bad position. The choice of the lead cast was an immediate win for me, as I know both actors from previous projects where their performances stood out for how well they were carried out, with Tom Blyth perfectly portraying the young Snow and Emily Bader being the eloquent Jane... so from the outset, I knew that at least the acting was going to be believable.
En éste sentido, la historia está contada en saltos temporales, en la actualidad Poppy y Alex ya no se hablan desde hace 2 años, pero para entender porqué han llegado a ese punto, la película nos lleva a varios veranos anteriores donde podemos ver un poco de la dinámica en la amistad que éstos manejaban. Los saltos temporales están identificados, es decir al espectador se le dice cuando es el tiempo actual, y cuando estamos en el pasado, a mí particularmente eso me gusta que lo hagan porque yo fácilmente me pierdo cuando hay manejo de varias líneas temporales, así que lo agradezco.
Ahora bien, de todos los saltos temporales que se hacen siento que mi favorito es el primero, que es cuando nos llevan al inicio de la amistad, ese período de tiempo me parece muy significativo porque te dejan ver en un primer plano qué personalidad adopta cada uno, es la primera vez que nos muestran que son literalmente, dos polos opuestos. Me da la sensación, que es la secuencia de escenas que mejor llevaron y en la que más se esforzaron, y ésto lo menciono porque las demás sí se sienten más flojas, de hecho de más demás vacaciones solo se alcanza a ver un día, cuando en teoría ellos pasaban una semana juntos, y creo eso influyen de forma negativa en la narrativa de “mejores amigos de años”, porque la interacción que vemos de ellos en los momentos donde estaban juntos, es muy poca.

Currently, Poppy and Alex have not spoken to each other for two years, but to understand why they have reached this point, the film takes us back to several previous summers where we can see a little of the dynamics of their friendship. The time jumps are identified, meaning that the viewer is told when it is the present and when we are in the past. I particularly like that they do this because I easily get lost when there are multiple timelines, so I appreciate it.
Now, of all the time jumps, I feel that my favourite is the first one, which is when we are taken to the beginning of the friendship. I find that period of time very significant because it allows us to see in close-up what personality each one adopts. It is the first time we are shown that they are literally polar opposites. I get the feeling that this is the sequence of scenes that they handled best and put the most effort into. and I mention this because the others feel weaker. In fact, of all the other holidays, we only get to see one day, when in theory they spent a week together, and I think that has a negative influence on the narrative of “best friends for years”, because the interaction we see between them in the moments when they were together is very little.
¿Hace ésto que no nos creamos el romance? Para nada, porque como bien dije los actores hacen un trabajo increíble, la química que manejan es imposible de ignorar, y ellos mismos se encargan de transmitir esa complicidad propia de la clase amistad que buscan reflejar, sabes que entre ellos hay millones experiencias, anécdotas, secretos, risas compartidas y todo es gracias a la actuación. Ahora, como personajes en sí, creo que me identifico más con Alex que con Poppy porque la verdad ella me estresaba un poco, su indecisión o falta de horizonte es lo que inicia todo, es lo que hace que ella y Alex se distancien, y cuando llega el momento en sí del romance, es ese detalle el que también hace que casi acabe antes de tiempo.
Me parece que la confrontación que Alex le hace es sumamente acertada porque él sí tenía muy claro lo que quería, y no es que Poppy no lo tuviese, sino que quería seguir evadiendo decisiones que tenía que empezar a tomar, en un principio me quedó la sensación de que ella renunció a quien era por él, pero la verdad es que analizando a profundidad entendí que ella necesitaba un hogar, si continuaba por el rumbo que llevaba, inevitablemente acabaría perdiéndose.
Does this mean we don't believe in the romance? Not at all, because as I said, the actors do an incredible job, the chemistry between them is impossible to ignore, and they themselves convey the complicity of the friendship they seek to portray. You know that between them there are millions of experiences, anecdotes, secrets, shared laughs, and it's all thanks to their acting. Now, as characters themselves, I think I identify more with Alex than with Poppy because, to be honest, she stressed me out a bit. Her indecision or lack of direction is what starts everything, it's what causes her and Alex to drift apart, and when the moment of romance arrives, it's that detail that also causes it to end prematurely.
I think Alex's confrontation with her is extremely accurate because he was very clear about what he wanted, and it's not that Poppy didn't have that clarity, but rather that she wanted to continue avoiding the decisions she had to start making. At first, I was left with the feeling that she gave up who she was for him, but the truth is that, upon deeper analysis, I understood that she needed a home, and if she continued on the path she was on, she would inevitably end up losing it.
Claramente no todo es perfecto, es una película que tiene sus fallos importantes, a mí el que principalmente me hizo ruido es la falta de interacción de personajes secundarios, la familia de Alex y de Poppy es básicamente inexistente, a los padres de Poppy solo los vemos al inicio en una escena bastante incómoda de ver por cierto, al papá de Alex a duras penas y lo vemos, la mamá (quien falleció cuando él era un niño) solo la mencionan una vez, y el hermano de Alex es quien podríamos decir que tiene más interacción y aún así se siente como adorno, un personaje utilizado simplemente para que se dé cierta situación en donde ambos deben estar, y ni hablar de la novia de Alex que se menciona durante toda la película y solo aparece dos veces en pantalla.
Entiendo que lo que se quiere es una historia centrada en la pareja principal, pero siento que fue muy excluyente en cuanto a involucrar más personas dentro de la narrativa, sobre todo porque son los personajes secundarios los que muchas veces hacen que los protagonistas vean el panorama que se abre ante ellos, los hacen muchas veces entender cosas que están a simple vista, pero que obviamente no logran ver, y aquí desafortunadamente no tenemos esa clase de interacciones.
Clearly, not everything is perfect. It's a film that has its significant flaws. What bothered me the most was the lack of interaction between secondary characters. Alex and Poppy's families are basically non-existent. We only see Poppy's parents at the beginning in a scene that is quite uncomfortable to watch, to be honest. We barely see Alex's father, his mother (who died when he was a child) is only mentioned once, and Alex's brother is the one who could be said to have the most interaction, yet he still feels like a prop, a character used simply to create a certain situation where both of them must be present. Not to mention Alex's girlfriend, who is mentioned throughout the film but only appears on screen twice.
I understand that the intention is to have a story centred on the main couple, but I feel that it was very exclusive in terms of involving more people in the narrative, especially because it is often the secondary characters who make the protagonists see the bigger picture, who often make them understand things that are obvious but that they obviously fail to see, and here, unfortunately, we do not have that kind of interaction.
