Reseña del filme "La vida por delante"/Review of the film "The Life Ahead" (Esp-Eng
Hello, my friends. Happy Sunday to everyone.
A few days ago, a film was broadcast on Cuban television that made me cry more than once. I am a "crybaby," I admit it; I've had this "gift" since I was little. Maybe it's an excess of sensitivity, but I am one of those who gets emotional and vibrates with a simple love scene (in any of its variants) or with an undeserved death, whether it's fiction or based on a real event.
I like to think of human betterment as something real and tangible, and with this film, I had the opportunity to confirm it once again. This Italian drama marks the return to the cinema of the great Sophia Loren, this time directed by her own son. It is based on the French novel "The Life Before Us." In addition to Sophia, it features the performance of Spanish actress Abril Zamora, who plays the role of Lola, a unique transgender character who is the sweetest and most tender of all.
The film addresses themes such as immigration (which touches me closely), orphanhood, personal trauma, and old age, among others. It is set in a coastal town in Italy and tells us the moving story of a woman and a boy. Madame Rosa, the protagonist, played by Sophia Loren, is an elderly Holocaust survivor (from the Auschwitz concentration camp), which left her with deep trauma.
As an additional detail, I'll tell you that this woman, during her youth, was a prostitute, and now, in the twilight of her life, she has a small business caring for the children of other sex workers. Her life is transformed when she meets Momo, a 12-year-old orphaned Senegalese immigrant boy, who survives on the streets doing whatever it takes, including selling drugs, and who, coincidentally, had tried to rob her shortly before.
The relationship between the two begins conflictively. Momo is a "street kid," a "thief" with a rebellious and rude character, while Madame Rosa is a proud and temperamental woman, but despite carrying the scars of a past, she has not lost the ability to love and to offer shelter to the destitute; she possesses great wisdom and a generous heart, despite her apparent roughness.
As the film progresses, the conflicts between Momo and Rosa, who remains reluctant to accept him, grow. However, their coexistence creates an unexpected bond that strengthens, and they find in each other comfort and a powerful reason to move forward. Rosa becomes a kind of grandmother for Momo, guiding him, and Momo becomes Rosa's caregiver when her health worsens. Momo, knowing his "grandmother's" panic of hospitals, makes her a promise: to avoid at all costs her being admitted to one. I could keep talking about this film, but I think I've already given away a lot; now it's your turn to enjoy the memorable scenes I won't tell you about.
"The Life Ahead" is a beautiful and sentimental film worth seeing. It is a tale about love, loss, and redemption that demonstrates that sometimes family is not the one you are born into, but the one you choose, the one we create ourselves. If you decide to watch it, keep a handkerchief handy to dry your tears.
