CineTV Contest #31: Lex and Tim in my Favorite Movie with a Young Lead.

As a lover of 90's cinema, I have to be honest and tell you that when I read the submission for contest #31 of the great CineTV community, I couldn't help but remember these guys, a pair of brothers who had gone through the loss of their father and loved their grandfather John Hammond very much. The detail is that the grandfather was leading the most ambitious project of the time and had enough money to make it happen: a park full of dinosaurs, but not plastic or metal, but real dinosaurs of flesh and blood.

It is, of course, the 1993 film Jurassic Park, by American director Steven Spielberg. One of the highest-grossing films of all time, with several sequels. But specifically, in that first installment of the saga, there was the special participation of two children, brothers Alexis (Ariana Richards) and Timothy Murphy (Joseph Mazzello), who are affectionately known as Lex and Tim, 13 and 10 years old respectively. Well, like all children, they go to have fun, but they have something very particular and that is how studious they are.

While it is true that Lex and Tim are not announced as the linear protagonists of the film, it is also true that from the moment they appear on the scene, the real adventure begins. So much so, that they become the central characters of the film, taking into account that this is the most promising park for all kinds of audiences, although we all know that the central audience of all entertainment are children. That is why their beloved grandfather invites them before the approval and opening of the project.

Then, with the arrival of the grandchildren and the personalities of each of them, the entire team is established for the pilot tour of the island. Dr. Ellie's (Laura Dern) and everyone's attention is focused on taking care of the kids, except for the lawyer Gennaro, who abandons them in the Jeep when the T-Rex shows up. That scene moved me, because being empathetic with them, they came from a forced abandonment by the death of their parents and for that same reason, I always imagined that they saw that figure in Alan and Ellie; who end up exercising that role, in the development of the film.

It was fun to watch Lex activate the security doors from the computer, since none of the adults present knew how to operate the system. Today when I watch it, I laugh because it was the 1990s and the technological age was just beginning. That is to say, without her they would not have been able to activate the security systems. For his part, Tim went through the toughest situations, from falling into the Jeep from a tree, to receiving a big electric shock that left him very dazed ha,ha,ha.

However, after going through so many dangers together, Alan, Lex and Tim strengthen their bonds of friendship and because of the experiences they lived through in those critical days, the children end up changing the perception that Dr. Grant (Sam Neill) had. Since he had no children and had always shown himself to be very repellent to infants. For that reason, I perceived feelings of nostalgia and joy, when they all managed to leave the island safely and Alan carried the children in his arms, while they slept next to him in the helicopter.

Those images of the positive change that Alan, Ellie, Lex and Tim experienced are etched in my mind; with the classic instrumental music as the helicopter crossed the ocean. It's a sign that we can all change and become better people. Definitely, having included these excellent child actors was a great success, so much so that it is what I remember most about this movie.

Thanks for the detail,
They are still actors, although Ariana (Lex) is also a professional painter.

I agree with you, this film left a mark in my life and I regret that Tim and Lex did not continue in the saga.

Regards

Lex and Tim are very interesting characters, I remember that I always found the dynamic between these two siblings very funny, because they were pretty smart kids and Jurassic Park was one of the movies I watched the most as a kid 😁

True, in fact when little Tim meets Dr Grant in person, he tells him that he read his book and identifies with him, seeing perhaps a father figure that Alan then plays very well, by taking care of him since the Jeep falls in the middle of the jungle.

Thanks for your comment @spardaryodan
