The Spirit of Ponyo is Here

There is a famous scene from Studio Ghibli's animated film, Ponyo, in which a lady cooks some Ramen for the children, who are beyond thrilled by the treat. This scene encapsulates the genius of Hayao Miyazaki, whose work is full of scenes from daily life mixed with the fantastical world of Japanese supernatural folklore. I just happened to have the ingredients necessary to recreate this comfort dish, at least visually if not culinarily. I purchased the ramen from a Japanese store, then added ham, boiled eggs, and scallions. I find Japanese ramen subtle in its flavour, so it doesn't overwhelm the other ingredients. Very tasty. There's a reason why the Japanese named noodles as the best invention of the 20th century.

That looks good (except for the scallions 😄--not my favorite garnish)

except for the scallions 😄

Sacrilege!

I actually don't know if they're scallions in the animation but I added them for the looks anyway. :)

Just for the record, I had to go find something to eat after scrolling upon that glorious photo of yours, YUMMMM!!!

Also, at our house we are firmly in the camp that pretty much everything tastes better with scallions on it lol, hope your beautiful meal was as enjoyable as a Ghibli flick, (which I adore all of them!).

We're so easily persuaded. When I saw the animation of the ramen, that's all I could think about until I decided to do it. I could have used less ham but I wanted to recreate the look, and it was yummy.

So happy to see you're a Ghibli fan. Their films have high re-watch value because of all the little details they crammed in them.

I get struck with foodspiration like that too! Your recreation was just so spot on, I'm so glad it was yummy even if it was a bit on the hammy side lol.

I was a teenager when Princess Mononoke came out, been hooked on Miyazaki's work ever since.😊

That said, I definitely think it's time for a SG film fest, complete with some ramen to slurp on hahaha! Thank for the wonderful idea my friend!
