I have a rule when I came to this community not to see reviews of movies that I might see, but I came across one of this movie from @jcrodriguez that left me enchanted! and I told myself that I had to see it! which couldn't have been more right because I was really amazed with it.

As a person who loves rock music since I was very young, I obviously knew the King of Rock and Roll for some time, but I never really got to detail who the artist was, his voice seemed beautiful to me as it was so deep and I love those voices in any style of music; although I must be honest, it seemed a little quirky with that wardrobe and that hairstyle.

But there was one thing that caught my attention, I didn't understand why, even though he was so famous, I hadn't known so much about him. It may seem strange, but I know a lot of music from that era, even though I wasn't even close to appearing on planet earth at that time.

My mom was very fond of Rock and Roll and since I was born I remember listening to a lot of groups like the Beatles or the Rolling Stone, but I never thought about why if Elvis Presley was closer, since I lived in North America and those groups were English, why didn't I know him so much? Why didn't that music reach my mom who loved rock? The reason is quite sad and they tell you in the movie, you have to see it to know it and it is something crucial in the life of the King of Rock and Roll.

I apologize in advance and there are too many things I liked about the movie, so many! that I don't know how to organize this post, I'll do what I can, although it might look a bit messy.

For example, I love that it is an autobiographical movie and that it is being released just for the 45th anniversary of Elvis' death, because I feel that nowadays we should give credit to those great artists that came out long before this time, that became true musical references and established the basis for the good music we listen to today.

I'm talking about real music, I agree that Elvis looked a bit overdone aesthetically at first glance for the time when most of you here knew him, but one thing most of us can agree on is that he had one of the best voices we will ever hear in our lifetime.

This movie is about the rise to fame, what it took to stay at the top and the rapid decline that the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley had, a story that perhaps many ignorant of culture like me, did not know and did not give the importance of knowing, although they should have.

But apart from all that, I must emphasize that what I liked most about the movie was not only knowing the life of the King of Rock, but the whole movie is a true audiovisual marvel! I love the 50's and 60's, all the fashion, the costumes, the high contrasts of textures, colors and above all the pop art is truly wonderful to watch.

But besides the fact that they recreated the era to perfection with that setting that for me was impossible to ignore, the direction knew how to make it excellent! I did not know this director Baz Luhrmann, maybe I have seen some of his films, because later I read that he is the same of Mouling Rouge and The Great Gatsby, which I did see and I loved them equally, but as I do not know much about cinema I had not detailed it, the only thing I know is what he did with this film, I was fascinated! I've already become a fan and I need to see more of him!

I loved the kind of narration he used, there is something about non-linear narrations that always catch my attention, it's a film that starts from the end, a reverse narrative structure, an ending that probably many already know, where Elvis Presley's Manager, named Tom Parker acts as a first person narrator telling the story of Elvis' life and why people blame him for what happened to him in his life and career.

In between the director adds special narrative elements that are sometimes associated with the pop art that I love so much, like the beautiful comic book style narrations, which for me makes the film even more striking, all that mixed with the spectacular music of Elvis, modifying the narrative structure and making it now non-linear, with jumps in time every so often and doing it in a spectacularly artistic way!

Picsart_22-06-20_22-02-40-329.png

For me the decade of the 50's and 60's was one of the most characteristic eras and every time I see it represented in the movies, it fascinates me! I feel that culturally speaking it was one of the richest in many arts, in fact, I could say that it is one of the eras that contributed the most to today's popular culture.

Learning about Elvis through this movie made me appreciate that era even more and made me analyze again how it is so incredible that beauty standards can change so radically without even realizing it over time.

That's exactly what Elvis Presley did and what the movie is based on, how this man comes out of nowhere in American culture, breaking all the stereotypes of music in the US that was being listened to up to that point, where most of what was on display was country music. Suddenly out comes this man so outgoing, with eyeliner, an extra colorful wardrobe, a nice hairstyle, an incredible voice, but above all, not at all like the rest! someone who might seem ridiculous to many, but to many more was a total cause of revolution.

Watching the movie made me remember a little bit the actuality and analyze the effect of some new music genres like Kpop, maybe I will be criticized a little bit, not to say too much! here, because they will say that it has nothing to do, but even though the genre of music is totally different from each other, kpop does exactly what Elvis did, a mix of good vocals, revolutionary movements, flashy costumes, exaggerated hairstyles and makeup, so, after all, there are quite a few similarities between that era and this one which is currently quite flooded with that style of Korean music.

The point is not to compare Kpop to Elvis Rock and Roll, it's the amazing thing to keep analyzing how societies are so resistant to change, even though we've been through so many, like at the time when Elvis Presley came up seeing such a hip movement was considered completely obscene and could even be labeled as immoral and even illegal.

As well as the fact that lying on stage while singing could generate so much euphoria in women and how that ended up being so shocking to the conservationist groups of that time, so much so that they even threatened to put him in jail, the worst? The worst part is that this is still happening today in many countries.

There are still cultures where artists, in any art form, are not allowed to make certain movements, wear certain clothes or show certain parts of the body, and it has been almost 90 years since the rise of Elvis Presley. How is it that we still haven't gotten used to the changes and artistic freedom in so many countries? Rambling through the almost 3 hours of film I got to thinking about that and how people criticize so much the fans of some musical genre, some independent film directors, sculptors and conceptual art painters, etc., even when the emergence of great artists in the world is due to just that, to do something completely different from the rest!

This film shows us how Elvis allowed the beautiful tones of African-American gospel and blues music to become even more widely known, but from a white-skinned man with blue eyes like he was. It is impressive to see how this man really stood out so much from the rest of his group from such a young age, how a love for his music emerged in groups that no one with his racial characteristics in their right mind would have noticed at the time.

Elvis mixed musical genres, cultures, body movements and special sounds, created beautiful lyrics that had so much of what he had learned in the past, as well as the thoughts of his present, he revolutionized the music of his culture, his time, his country and his influence expanded more than he could even appreciate sadly before he died.

He thought he would die and his music would never be remembered, but what he never knew is that he became the idol of an entire generation and even today he is considered one of the greatest sources of inspiration for many artists in the world.

I didn't know much about this man, I admit it, I only heard his music in some movies here and there and I saw him in one or another video, I saw him as a characteristic image of Las Vegas and nothing more, I even thought he was born there, but now that I know him a little more I admire him too much! for everything he had to face to do what made him happy at a time when the struggles for change were very intense in North America, a thing completely admirable! And all this I was able to observe through this wonderful film, so you have to see it!

ELVIS PRESLEY (Austin Butler)

Picsart_22-08-30_21-55-13-760.jpg

Picsart_22-06-20_22-02-40-329.png

I must start by saying that as a connoisseur of American showbiz hahaha, I knew when they chose this actor Austin Butler as the one who was going to play Elvis, and when he was announced I was disappointed, and I knew Butler mainly from Disney movies and some Nickelodeon series where he didn't stand out much, so I was quite predisposed.

However, now I recognize that it was a big mistake on my part! because this guy really knew how to play his part! I started thinking while watching him how amazing it is how these actors grow up in front of our screens and you don't even realize what they become until they are given a good role and directed by a good director.

Butler left it all in that performance, he really did! You could see the radical change from who he is to become the King of Rock, we all know that Elvis was very unique and in order to portray him you have to fully capture his essence because if you don't develop that stage like him, the performance was never going to look like him.

Regarding the real Elvis, and trying to analyze him a little bit, I don't want to give spoilers, so I'll just say that you will see in the movie how an innocent artist with all the talent in the world, being handled by an unscrupulous manager and only with ulterior motives can completely ruin his future from the moment they take him in their hands.

In addition, we can see how a person who appears to have a strong personality and a certain level of ego that projects on stage, can at the same time be really weak mentally speaking, easily manipulated and feel very lonely, to the point that many take advantage of his work in a very obvious way and never realize it, because his personality is so weak that to raise his ego a little with some simple flattery ends up being completely manipulated by those who take advantage.

It is very unfortunate, but this kind of artists are so focused on what they like, the adrenaline that makes them feel being on stage and enjoying their shows with their fans, that sometimes they overlook details that would be very obvious to see for anyone but them, because they never focused on their own life, but on the life of a celebrity, which is completely different from the real one.

They end up realizing it in the end, but when they are already completely psychically destroyed. This reminded me of the question I am always asked by some, is it possible for a person suffering from mental illness to act perfectly fine, to look very happy and suddenly we find out that they were always going through depression? You will see the answer in this film, as well as in the story of many other music and acting legends whose lives ended at a very young age.

Butler's performance gets all my compliments, because I have seen him in previous performances and the radical change we see here when he stepped into that role is visible in leagues, now I understand why when they said he would be the one portraying the King of Rock some months later he ended his 9 year relationship with his previous partner Vanessa Hudgens, and in the American press it was rumored that it was because he had left the relationship a bit for giving himself too much to that character. Since I saw this film, I understand that there may have been some truth to that rumor.

TOM PARKER (Tom Hanks)

Picsart_22-08-30_21-57-48-980.jpg

source

Picsart_22-06-20_22-02-40-329.png

As a person who has loved Tom Hanks all my life I was completely shocked to see him be so bad, I swear I finished the movie with a lump in my throat and hating Tom Hanks to death, I didn't want to see him! and that shows what a great performance he gave, although I shouldn't be shocked because the man is one of my favorite movie actors, absolutely everything he does, he does well!

Also, that it took that many hours it must have taken to get into that special effects costume and makeup to look so old and obese is always an incredible thing to imagine, it really takes a lot of acting effort, but I think we're all used to Tom Hanks doing his best every time and everything looks great.

I think this is the only movie in my life that I have seen him being the bad guy, the worst thing is that Tom Parker is not just any bad guy, he is not the one that you will see being bad obviously, he is the one that instills you more resentment because he is a real mind manipulator, the one that knows people and use their weakest side to achieve what they want using the worst strategies of mental destruction.

This type of character always reminds me of an index of evil established by a group of psychiatrists at Columbia University in the USA, where the highest level does not only include those who do harm directly, but also those who cause harm indirectly by using artifices to control the psyche of others.

And that is worse than killing someone, to lead someone to his self-destruction when you lock him in a world where you make him believe that he only has you as a measure of salvation, that you consider him his family and want the best for him, but on the other hand you are destroying him progressively and quite consciously, is one of the highest levels of evil there is, even more than dismembering and slitting people's throats, because it is a form of psychological torture and that, most of the time, hurts more than the physical one.

There is nothing more to say about this man, Tom Hanks did it perfectly as everything he does, I really liked the frontal shots of his features, they gave a special aura to the film, even when they focus on the expressions without leaving anything to free interpretation, because they are well exaggerated to make it seem obvious that he is acting with ulterior motives, the direction did it so well! with the images that everything looked spectacular!

PRISCILLA PRESLEY (Olivia Dejonge)

Picsart_22-08-30_21-58-17-547.jpg

source

Picsart_22-06-20_22-02-40-329.png

I must say that I didn't know the actress Olivia Dejonge and her appearance on screen wasn't enough to detail much about her either, but I liked her performance, in it you can't analyze many things but being an actress of only 24 years old she did quite well. I admit that I would have liked to delve more into the relationship between Elvis and Priscilla, but I guess it was not the idea of the film to go into lurid or controversial details but to give a tribute to the King of Rock and Roll.

Priscilla Presley has been a well-known figure for decades in American culture, however, perhaps many like me who did not live in that era when she was married to Elvis, did not know what was behind that relationship; I liked that even when the film does not detail the relationship, it shows a little detail that makes us have an idea of how both loved their daughter Lisa Marie above all things and watched over her welfare, daughter of whom we have had more information about her life today. Priscilla says she still loves Elvis and after watching this movie I totally believe her.

Picsart_22-06-20_21-32-18-627.png

Did I like the movie? I loved it! In fact, I didn't even know how long it was and I didn't find out until long after I finished it and read how many years had passed since Elvis' death to make this review, which means that the almost 3 hours of the movie flew by, and it was because I loved it!

Would I recommend it? To those who appreciate good music, who are interested in musical culture and want to know about the history of the King of Rock and Roll, only those will be able to appreciate almost 3 hours of this audiovisual marvel without complaining.

Would you see it again? In fact, I already told my mom to watch it with me, I know she will love to know more about Elvis, since she surely didn't know enough about him in his time because of everything that is told in the movie, which, by the way, is very, very unfortunate.

Now I say goodbye friends, I really recommend this beautiful production from start to finish, have you seen it yet, what did you think of it?
