I was expecting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to blow my mind but it ended up being something that I don't really know how to qualify honestly, when I saw that Tim Burton was going to make the sequel after almost 40 years I obviously had my expectations very high and the truth is that I don't know if they were completely fulfilled. Michael Keaton returns as Juice and the truth is the guy hasn't lost a bit of that craziness that characterized him in the 80's, when I saw him in action I was reminded why this character became so iconic from the beginning, although I feel that this time they didn't give him as much time as one would have expected considering he is the main star of the show. Winona Ryder as Lydia is also fine but you can tell the years have passed and her character is now a divorced mom with her own teenage daughter issues, which isn't a bad concept but at times it felt like she was acting more on autopilot than really getting into the role like she used to.

Michael Keaton regresa como el Juice y la verdad el tipo no ha perdido ni un poquito de esa locura que lo caracterizaba en los 80, cuando lo vi en acción me recordé por qué este personaje se volvió tan icónico desde el principio, aunque siento que esta vez no le dieron tanto tiempo como uno hubiera esperado considerando que es la estrella principal del show. Winona Ryder como Lydia también está bien pero se nota que ya pasaron los años y su personaje ahora es una mamá divorciada con problemas de su propia hija adolescente, lo cual no es un mal concepto pero a veces me pareció como que actuaba más en piloto automático que realmente metiéndose de lleno en el papel como lo hacía antes.

The story kicks off with Lydia who now has a TV show about ghosts and a daughter named Astrid played by Jenna Ortega who obviously doesn't believe in anything supernatural and thinks her mom is crazy, typical troubled mother daughter relationship that we've seen a thousand times before in other movies but here it works. When Lydia's dad is killed by a shark, they all go back to Winter River for the funeral and obviously that's where all the craziness starts again because the house is still as haunted as before, although now Adam and Barbara are no longer there as they explain they found a way to move on to the afterlife or something that seemed to me a cheap excuse to not bring back Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin, because in my opinion they were an important part of the charm of the first movie. Catherine OHara as Delia I loved the woman has not lost any of that particular energy she has and every scene where she appears makes you laugh even a little bit, definitely she and Michael Keaton are the ones who shine the most in the whole movie and who really make you feel that you are watching a true continuation of Beetlejuice, the other actors are fine but do not reach the level of these two who clearly know exactly what they are doing.

La historia arranca con Lydia que ahora tiene un programa de televisión sobre fantasmas y una hija llamada Astrid interpretada por Jenna Ortega que obviamente no cree en nada de lo sobrenatural y piensa que su mamá está loca, típica relación madre hija problemática que ya hemos visto mil veces en otras películas pero aquí funciona. Cuando el papá de Lydia muere por culpa de un tiburón, todas regresan a Winter River para el funeral y obviamente ahí es donde empieza toda la locura otra vez porque la casa sigue igual de embrujada que antes, aunque ahora ya no están Adam y Barbara que según explican encontraron una manera de seguir adelante al más allá o algo así que me pareció una excusa barata para no traer de vuelta a Geena Davis y Alec Baldwin, porque en mi opinión eran parte importante del encanto de la primera película. Catherine OHara como Delia me encantó la mujer no ha perdido nada de esa energía tan particular que tiene y cada escena donde aparece te hace reír aunque sea un poquito, definitivamente ella y Michael Keaton son los que más brillan en toda la peli y quienes realmente te hacen sentir que estás viendo una continuación verdadera de Beetlejuice, los demás actores están bien pero no llegan al nivel de estos dos que claramente saben exactamente lo que están haciendo.

Now the problem here is that the movie has too many things going on at the same time and never ends up developing any of them well, you have Lydia's story with her daughter, then there is Beetlejuice's thing with his ex-wife who appears as the main bad guy played by Monica Bellucci, there's also a subplot with Willem Dafoe as a dead detective chasing Beetlejuice, and on top of all that they throw in a love story between Lydia's daughter and a ghost who turns out to be a murderer, it's too much for one movie, I felt like they had grabbed three different scripts and blended them in a blender. Monica Bellucci is fine as the vengeful ex-wife but her character never feels like a real threat, rather she seems to be there just to give Beetlejuice something to do while the rest of the plot happens and while Willem Dafoe is funny in that ghost cop role he also doesn't add much to the main story beyond some comedic scenes, which are okay but not important at all. I like more when the movie focuses on the Deetz family and their internal problems, more on the relationship between Lydia and Astrid that has potential to be emotional but the bad thing is that it never gets to be fully developed because they are always interrupting with some joke or some action scene that is not relevant.

Ahora el problema aquí es que la peli tiene demasiadas cosas que pasan al mismo tiempo y nunca termina de desarrollar bien ninguna de ellas, tienes la historia de Lydia con su hija, luego está el rollo de Beetlejuice con su ex esposa que aparece como la mala principal interpretada por Monica Bellucci, también hay una subtrama con Willem Dafoe como un detective muerto que persigue a Beetlejuice, y encima de todo eso meten una historia de amor entre la hija de Lydia y un fantasma que resulta ser un asesino, es demasiado para una sola película, sentí que habían agarrado tres guiones diferentes y los habían mezclado en una licuadora. Monica Bellucci está bien como la ex esposa vengativa pero su personaje nunca se siente como una amenaza real, más bien parece que está ahí solo para darle algo que hacer a Beetlejuice mientras pasa el resto de la trama y aunque Willem Dafoe es divertido en ese papel de policía fantasma tampoco agrega mucho a la historia principal más allá de algunas escenas cómicas, que están bien pero no son importantes para nada. Me gusta más cuando la peli se enfoca en la familia Deetz y sus problemas internos, más en la relación entre Lydia y Astrid que tiene potencial para ser emotiva pero lo malo es que nunca llega a desarrollarse completamente porque siempre están interrumpiendo con algún chiste o alguna escena de acción que no viene al caso.

Visually the movie is spectacular and you can tell that Tim Burton still has the touch to create unique worlds full of incredible details, the effects are great and make you remember how special the 80's movies were compared to all the CGI they use now. The character of Bob who is one of Beetlejuice's employees was my favorite and I'm sure more than one of you will like him if you decide to see the movie soon because he has that absurd humor that works very well for this kind of movie, every time he appears you know something funny is going to happen even if it's something super simple but to me it seems that this kind of details are the ones that make the movie worth it despite all its problems in the story. That musical scene at the end I thought it was entertaining but at the same time I thought it was a bit out of place, as if they had decided to put it in just because and not because it really contributed something to the story, although I have to admit that seeing all the characters singing and dancing together has its charm and made me smile. The ending was okay but I didn't think it was anything earth-shattering, rather I felt like all the conflicts were resolved rather quickly and conveniently and that made me feel like there wasn't much at stake throughout the whole movie, which I think is another problem because I never got to see any character being in any real danger.

Visualmente la película está espectacular y se nota que Tim Burton todavía tiene el toque para crear mundos únicos llenos de detalles increíbles, los efectos están geniales y te hacen recordar lo especial que eran las pelis de los 80 comparadas con todo el CGI que usan ahora. El personaje de Bob que es uno de los empleados de Beetlejuice fue mi favorito y estoy segura que a mas de uno le habrá gustado o le gustara si decides ver la peli pronto porque tiene ese humor absurdo que funciona muy bien para este tipo de película, cada vez que aparece ya sabes que algo gracioso va a pasar aunque sea algo super simple pero a mi me parece que este tipo de detalles son los que hacen que la película valga la pena a pesar de todos sus problemas en la historia. Esa escena musical que está en el final me pareció que era entretenida pero a la vez la snetí un poco fuera de lugar, como si hubieran decidido meterla porque sí y no porque realmente aportara algo a la historia, aunque tengo que admitir que ver a todos los personajes cantando y bailando juntos tiene su encanto y me hizo sacar una sonrisa. El final estuvo bien pero no me pareció nada del otro mundo, m+as bien me pareció que todos los conflictos se resolvieron de manera bastante rápida y conveniente y eso me hizo sentir como que si no hubo mucho en juego durante toda la película, lo cual creo que es otro de los problemas porque nunca llegué a ver que algún personaje estuviera en peligro de verdad.

I think Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a movie that is fine to pass the time but it's not going to go down in history as a classic like the first one, it has its funny and nostalgic moments but I also think they missed the opportunity to do something really special with these characters after so many years of waiting. My score for this movie is a 6.5/10, it's above average but it's not something extraordinary either, even though I'm a fan of the original and I really enjoyed seeing these actors again in their roles, it's not something I'm excited to recommend to everyone. Of course, I think the problem is that I had high expectations and was expecting something that was at the level of the first one, so I was a little disappointed because it clearly does not reach those heights that Burton set in the 80s. The movie fulfills its function of entertaining you for an hour and a half without boring you too much, but it didn't leave me thinking after it was over either, I think it's more light entertainment and it works better if you don't demand too much from it and just let yourself get carried away by the visual madness that characterizes the world of Beetlejuice.

Creo qur Beetlejuice Beetlejuice es una película que está bien para pasar el rato pero no va a quedar en la historia como un clásico como la primera, tiene sus momentos divertidos y nostálgicos pero también creo que perdieron la oportunidad de hacer algo realmente especial con estos personajes después de tantos años de espera. Mi puntuación para esta peli es de un 6.5/10, está por encima del promedio pero tampoco es algo extraordinario, aunque soy fan de la original y me gustó mucho ver a estos actores otra vez en sus papeles, no es una cosa que me emocione por recomendar a todo el mundo. Claro creo que el problema está en que yo tenía las expectativas altas y espera algo que estuviera al nivel de la primera, así que me decepcioné un poco porque claramente no llega a esas alturas que marcó Burton en los 80. La película cumple su función de entretenerte durante hora y media sin aburrirte demasiado, pero tampoco me dejó pensando después de que terminó, creo que es más entretenimiento ligero y te funciona mejor si no le exiges mucho y simplemente te dejas llevar por la locura visual que caracteriza el mundo de Beetlejuice.
