I know it's not Valentine's Day and it's been a few months since that but I was provoked to watch Love Hurts (2025) which is supposed to mix action and romance and was released this year a week before the day of love with every intention, although in both genres it failed a bit hehehehe. Love Hurts stars Ke Huy Quan I don't know if some of you remember him, his first performance was as Short Round of Indiana Jones, here he was a teenager, a more recent role is in Everything Everywhere All at Once, he has also lent his voice for other movies like Kung Fu Panda 4, I particularly like his work I think he has enough charisma and also acts Ariana DeBose who seemed to me that she wanted to try to follow the line of other movies like Nobody or John Wick and I say try because she really failed to get the magic of any of them.

Sé que no estamos en el Día de San Valentine y que ya han pasado unos meses desde eso pero me provocó ver Love Hurts (2025) que se supone debería mezclar acción y romance y fue estrenada este año una semana antes del día del amor con toda la intención, aunque en ambos géneros falló un poco jejeje. Love Hurts está protagonizada por Ke Huy Quan no sé si algunos lo recuerdan su primera actuación fue como Short Round de Indiana Jones, aquí era un adolescente, un papel más reciente es en Everything Everywhere All at Once, también ha prestado su voz para otras película como Kung Fu Panda 4, a mí en lo particular me gusta su trabajo me parece que tiene bastante carisma y también actúa Ariana DeBose que me pareció que ella quería intentar seguir la línea de otras películas como Nobody o John Wick y digo intentar porque realmente no logró conseguir la magia de ninguna de ellas.

This movie has a simple plot it's no big deal, there's this guy Marvin who is a real estate agent who loves to sell houses in suburbia and spends his time making heart shaped cookies for his coworkers, when I see people like that I always wonder how they have time for that? I have a friend who is an excellent hostess and I wasn't born with that gift, apparently Marvin does. Well he sure hides behind his cookies a dark past, he used to be a hit man working for his mafia brother but when Rose an ex comes back into his life this whole quiet world turns into a mess and he has to face his violent past.

Esta película tiene una trama sencilla no es nada del otro mundo, está este tipo Marvin que es un agente inmobiliario que le encanta vender casas en suburbios y se la pasa haciendo galletas en forma de corazón para sus compañeros de trabajo, cuando veo personas así siempre me pregunto cómo les queda tiempo para eso? A mí apenas me alcanza el día para hacerle la comida a mi familia jejeje, yo tengo una amiga que ella es una excelente anfitriona y yo no nací con ese don, por lo visto Marvin si lo tiene. Bueno seguro oculta detrás de sus galletas un oscuro pasado y es que antes era un asesino a sueldo que trabajaba para su hermano mafioso pero cuando Rose una ex regresa a su vida todo este mundo tranquilo se vuelve un despelote y debe enfrentarse a su pasado violento.

All this sounds interesting in theory but in execution is where it all turns into a chorizo and although the movie doesn't last long I think it doesn't even reach an hour and a half, it should have a fast pace but it feels longaaa and heavy in many moments, especially when it tries to develop the supposed romantic chemistry between the main characters, which honestly in my opinion is conspicuous by its absence, because it seems that these protagonists are in completely different movies and I never got to see or feel that there was a real connection between them. To me this seemed like a big flaw because the movie is supposed to sell a love story that we should be interested in, I think that's why the idea was to release it for Valentine's Day and it seemed to me that it was more like they put things that had to do with the theme and said ready, we already have a theme movie, let's release it in February.

Todo esto suena interesante en teoría pero en la ejecución es donde todo se vuelve un chorizo y aunque la película no dura mucho creo que no llega ni a la hora y media, debería tener un ritmo rápido pero se siente largaaaa y pesada en muchos momentos, especialmente cuando intenta desarrollar la supuesta química romántica entre los protagonistas, que sinceramente a mí parecer brilla por su ausencia, porque pareciera que estos protagonistas están en películas completamente diferentes y nunca llegué a ver ni sentir que existiera una conexión real entre ellos. A mí esto me pareció una gran falla porque se supone que la película quiere vender una historia de amor por la que deberíamos estar interesados, creo que por eso fue la idea de estrenarla para San Valentín y me pareció más bien que fue como que le pusieron cosas que tenían que ver con el tema y dijeron listo ya tenemos una película temática vamos a estrenarla en febrero.

One thing I did like were the action scenes that show Ke Huy Quan's talent for martial arts and in some moments it looked to me like Jackie Chan style where common objects become improvised weapons and this makes the fights look somewhat comical, there is one scene in particular that gave me a lot of laughs where he uses cookie cutters as weapons as if they were mittens. The main bad guy played by Daniel Wu has an obsession with bubble tea and keeps sipping and using the reeds as weapons and this ends up being weird and out of place perhaps if it had been done more ironically it would have looked better. Marshawn Lynch plays one of the thugs and although his performance is not one of the most outstanding he gives some funny moments for the natural charisma that this guy has, although I must say that not all these entertaining moments manage to save the film because I think it lacked originality and depth to both the plot and the characters. Although the movie tries to be funny, it rarely made me laugh and the few times it did it was more because of the absurdity of some situations than because of a well constructed humor.

Algo que sí me gustó fueron las escenas de acción que muestran el talento de Ke Huy Quan para las artes marciales y en algunos momentos se me pareció al estilo de Jackie Chan donde los objetos comunes se convierten en armas improvisadas y esto hace que las peleas parezcan algo cómicas, hay una escena en particular que me dio mucha risa donde utiliza cortadores de galletas como armas como si fueran unas manopla. El malvado principal interpretado por Daniel Wu tiene una obsesión con un té de burbujas y se la pasa tomando sorbos y utilizando los carrizos como armas y esto termina siendp raro y fuera de lugar quizás si se hubiese hecho de forma más irónica hubiese quedado mejor. Marshawn Lynch interpreta a uno de los matones y aunque su actuación no es una de las que más destaque le da algunos momentos divertidos por el carisma natural que este tipo tiene, aunque debo decir que no todos estos momentos entretenidos logran salvar la película porque me parece que le faltó originalidad y profundidad tanto a la trama como a los personajes. Auqnue la película trata de ser graciosa rara vez me sacó una carcajada real y las pocas veces que fue así fue más por lo absurdo de algunas situaciones que por un humor bien construido.

One sad thing about Love Hurts is that not even the talent of its Oscar-winning actors could save a mediocre script and direction without personality, this movie failed to achieve its goal of being a fun combination of action and romance with a touch of black comedy perfect for Valentine's Day, it ended up being something generic that in my opinion failed to stand out in any particular aspect, it's a shame especially for Ke Huy Quan who deserved a better role to show off as a leading lady after her return to Hollywood and also for Ariana DeBose because her talent was wasted in a role that didn't allow her to show the skills that took her to win an Oscar. My score for Love Hurts is 5/10 because it is one of those movies that I watch and forget in one sitting and wouldn't pay at the theater for it, luckily I watched it on a streaming platform. I consider there are better action movies with humor like Nobody or Violent Night which are from the same producers it's not a secret it's on the movie poster but sorry I had to say it they are much better, and if you want a romantic movie for Valentine's Day any other option would be better.

Algo triste de Love Hurts es que ni siquiera el talento de sus actores premiados con el Oscar pudo salvar un guión mediocre y una dirección sin personalidad, esta película no logró su objetivo de ser una divertida combinación de acción y romance con un toque de comedia negra perfecta para San Valentín, terminó siendo algo genérico que en mi opinión no logró destacar en ningún aspecto particular, es una lástima especialmente para Ke Huy Quan que merecía un mejor papel para lucirse como protagonista después de su regreso a Hollywood y también para Ariana DeBose porque su talento se desperdició en un papel que no le permitió mostrar las habilidades que la llevaron a ganar un Oscar. Mi puntuación para Love Hurts es de 5/10 porque es una de esas películas que veo y olvido de una vez y no pagaría en el cine por ella, por suerte la vi en una plataforma de streaming. Considero que hay mejores películas de acción con humor como Nobody o Violent Night que son de los mismos productores no es un secreto está en el poster de la peli pero lo siento tenía que decirlo son mucho mejores, y si quieres una película romántica para San Valentín cualquier otra opción sería mejor.
