Mickey 17 (2025) - REVIEW - [ENGLISH-SPANISH]
I was disappointed with Bong Joonho's new film Mickey 17 because after seeing Parasite and being delighted with the work of this Korean director, I think my expectations were sky high. The truth is that I was expecting something more innovative with Bong's ability to mix genres but Mickey 17 is as if it had lost its way halfway through. Although the movie starts off great and has a good theme about cloning and a dystopian future where humanity is trying to colonize other planets and Robert Pattinson plays Mickey Barnes, a guy who becomes what they call an expendable, basically a human guinea pig who can die as many times as necessary because he is cloned over and over again. Like I said the concept is great and the initial part is great but then it all goes to shit when the movie decides to change direction and focus on things that frankly I didn't care that much about.
Me llevé una decepción con Mickey 17 la nueva película de Bong Joonho porque la verdad después de ver Parasite y quedar encantada con el trabajo de este director coreano, creo que mis expectativas estaban por las nubes. La verdad yo esperaba algo innovador más con esa capacidad que tiene Bong para mezclar géneros pero Mickey 17 es como si hubiera perdido el rumbo a mitad de camino. Aunque la película arranca súper bien y tiene un buen tema sobre clonación y un futuro distópico donde la humanidad está tratando de colonizar otros planetas y Robert Pattinson interpreta a Mickey Barnes, un tipo que se convierte en lo que llaman un expendable, básicamente un conejillo de indias humano que puede morir las veces que sea necesario porque lo van clonando una y otra vez. Como te digo el concepto es genial y la parte inicial también pero después todo se va al carajo cuando la película decide cambiar de dirección y enfocarse en cosas que francamente no me importaron tanto.
Mickey 17 feels like a black comedy, a deep reflection on humanity or a space action movie with giant bugs, it's too much and never ends up standing out in any of those three things. The first part did have me completely hooked, watching Mickey die in increasingly absurd ways as he tries to do his job on that frozen planet called Niflheim, but when the Creepers show up they are giant woodlice-like creatures and here the film completely lost focus. That theme of the moral implications of cloning or how society treats someone who isn't technically human fizzled out and went off on a tangent about interspecies communication and colonial politics that to me seems out of place.
Mickey 17 parece una comedia negra, una reflexión profunda sobre la humanidad o una película de acción espacial con bichos gigantes, es demasiado y nunca termina destacando en ninguna de esas tres cosas. La primera parte si me tuvo completamente enganchado, viendo cómo Mickey va muriendo de maneras cada vez más absurdas mientras trata de hacer su trabajo en ese planeta helado llamado Niflheim, pero cuando aparecen los Creepers son unas criaturas que parecen cochinillas gigantes y aquí la película perdió completamente el foco. Ese tema de las implicaciones morales de la clonación o de cómo la sociedad trata a alguien que técnicamente no es humano se esfumó y se fue por una tangente sobre comunicación interespecies y política colonial que a mí parecer esta fuera de lugar.
Mark Ruffalo is the failed politician who is clearly inspired by a certain former American president, but he seems more like a caricature than a real threat. Tony Collette is also in there doing weird stuff with sauces, which I guess is funny but I found it more annoying than anything else. I think the good part of the movie is when it focuses on the relationship between Mickey 17 and Mickey 18, but those moments are lost and it goes nowhere. What I do have to admit is that Robert Pattinson did great playing both Mickeys who look completely different, with Mickey 17 being this shy and submissive guy while Mickey 18 is more aggressive and determined, he also has good chemistry with Naomi Ackie who plays Nasha the ship's security officer who becomes Mickey's girlfriend.
Mark Ruffalo es el político fracasado que claramente está inspirado en cierto expresidente estadounidense, pero parece más una caricatura que una amenaza real. Tony Collette también está ahí haciendo cosas raras con salsas, lo cual supongo que es gracioso pero a mí me pareció más bien molesto que otra cosa. Yo creo que la parte buena de la película es cuando se enfoca en la relación entre Mickey 17 y Mickey 18, pero esos momentos se pierden y no lleva a ningún lado. Lo que sí tengo que reconocer es que Robert Pattinson lo hizo genial interpretación a ambos Mickey que parecen completamente diferente, con Mickey 17 siendo este tipo tímido y sumiso mientras que Mickey 18 es más agresivo y decidido, también tiene buena química con Naomi Ackie que hace de Nasha la oficial de seguridad de la nave que se convierte en la novia de Mickey.
The visual effects are top notch and make you believe in this futuristic world, from the spaceship to the costumes to the ice planet, everything looks believable and detailed. The Creepers are well designed, they are scary creatures but at the same time they are cute because they are intelligent and can communicate, but here I think is where the flaw of this movie is because it doesn't take advantage of this to deepen about colonialism and communication and rather goes the easy way of humans are bad and aliens are good, which seems very simple for a movie that started with complex ideas.
Los efectos visuales son de primera y te hacen creer en este mundo futurista, desde la nave espacial hasta los trajes y el planeta helado, todo se ve creíble y detallado. Los Creepers están bien diseñados, son criaturas que dan un poco de miedo pero a la vez son tiernas porque son inteligentes y pueden comunicarse, pero aquí creo que es donde está lña falla de esta peli porque no aprovecha esto para profundizar sobre el colonialismo y la comunicación y más bien se va por el camino fácil de los humanos son malos y los alienígenas son buenos, lo que me parece muy simple para una película que empezó con ideas complejas.
Almost a quarter of the way through the movie is where it all falls apart because it becomes a chaos of explosions, heroic sacrifices and meaningless resolutions, Mickey 18 decides to sacrifice himself along with Mark Ruffalo's bad guy, but I don't think it has that much impact because the relationship between the two Mickeys was not well developed. The scene where the Creepers threaten to kill all the humans with a collective scream is ridiculous and the fact that in the end it turns out they were lying makes the whole tension fake, it seems that Bong ran out of ideas and qwuished to finish the movie as fast as possible. And besides in the ending you see six months later that everything is perfect in the colony and humans and Creepers live in harmony, which is so disconnected from the rest of the movie. The movie ends by destroying the cloning machine in a ceremony that is supposed to be emotional but is empty because it never dealt well with the ethical implications of cloning.
Ya casi faltando com0o un cuarto de la pelicula es donde todo se desmorona porque se vuelve un caos de explosiones, sacrificios heroicos y resoluciones sin sentido, Mickey 18 decide sacrificarse junto con el malo de Mark Ruffalo, pero no me parece que tenga tanto impacto porque la relación entre los dos Mickey no se desarrolló bien. La escena donde los Creepers amenazan con matar a todos los humanos con un grito colectivo es ridícula y el hecho de que al final resulte que estaban mintiendo hace que toda la tensión sea falsa, parece que Bong se quedó sin ideas y qwuizó terminar la peli lo más rápido posible. Y aparte en el final se ve seis meses después que todo está perfecto en la colonia y humanos y Creepers viven en armonía, que es tan desconectado del resto de la película. La película termina destruyendo la máquina de clonación en una ceremonia que se supone que es emotiva pero es vacía porque nunca se trató bien sobre las implicaciones éticas de la clonación.
My score for Mickey 17 is 6.5/10, although it has enough good moments to keep my attention I think it could have been much better, in my opinion Bong Joon ho is a talented director and you can tell he had interesting ideas, but I think he couldn't decide on one story and it feels like three movies stuck in one. I think cloning as a central theme had potential to explore questions about identity, humanity and what makes us who we are, but the film barely touches on these ideas and went off on a tangent. This was what I liked the least and I think the scenes between Mickey and his clone could have been used more, Bong Joon-ho could have picked a single story and told it well, instead of trying to cram everything into one movie.
Mi puntuación para Mickey 17 es 6.5/10, aunque tiene suficientes momentos buenos para mantener mi atención creo que pudo haber sido mucho mejor, a mí parecer Bong Joon ho es un director que tiene talento y se nota que tenía ideas interesantes, pero creo que no pudo decidiri por una historia y parecen tres películas pegadas en una. Yo creo que la clonación como tema central tenía potencial para explorar preguntas sobre la identidad, la humanidad y lo que nos hace ser quienes somos, pero la película apenas si toca estas ideas y se fue por la tangente. Esto fue lo que menos me gustó y creo que las escenas entre Mickey y su clon se pudieron haber aprovechado más, Bong Joon-ho pudo haber elegido una sola historia y contarla bien, en lugar de tratar de meter todo en una sola película.
