There's a movie that had been sitting there and I hadn't watched it and it's Nosferatu, it has visual moments that leave you jaw-dropped but at the same time it has parts that made me think maybe I should have watched something else. Robert Eggers is a guy who knows what he's doing when it comes to creating atmospheres that transport you to another era, we've seen it with The Witch and The Northman but here with Nosferatu I feel like he went a bit overboard with that wanting to make a work of art thing. The truth is I felt that only the first hour was good because of everything that develops, Thomas Hutter who is Nicholas Hoult's character travels to a castle in the middle of the mountains and everything looks and feels pretty ominous with those gray and blue tones, that make you think you're watching a black and white movie even though it's not, to me this is important because it gives you that feeling that something bad is about to happen at any moment. Bill Skarsgård is Count Orlok and he's unrecognizable under all that makeup, the castle gives you goosebumps, those doors that open by themselves, the dark hallways, the coffin with strange symbols, I liked all that because it makes you see that this Count isn't a normal guy and that Thomas is in serious trouble.

Hay una película que se me había quedado por allí y no la había visto y es Nosferatu, tiene momentos visuales que te dejan con la boca abierta pero al mismo tiempo tiene partes que me hicieron pensar que tal vez debí ver otra cosa. Robert Eggers es un tipo que sabe lo que hace cuando se trata de crear ambientes que te transportan a otra época, lo hemos visto con The Witch y The Northman pero acá con Nosferatu siento que se le fue un poco la mano con eso de querer hacer una obra de arte. La verdad es que sentí que solo la primera hora fue bueno por todo lo ue se desarrolla, Thomas Hutter que es el personaje de Nicholas Holt viaja hasta un castillo en medio de las montañas y todo se ve y se siente bastabte tenebroso con esos tonos grises y azules, que te hacen pensar que estás viendo una película en blanco y negro aunque no lo sea, a mí me parece que esto es importante porque te da esa sensación de que algo malo está por pasar en cualquier momento. Bill Skarsgard es el Conde Orlok y está irreconocible debajo de todo ese maquillaje, el castillo te pone la piel de gallina, esas puertas que se abren solas, los pasillos oscuros, el ataúd con símbolos extraños, todo eso me gustó porque te hace ver que este Conde no es un tipo normal y que Thomas está en serios problemas.

The problem with the movie is that it focuses a lot on Ellen's story who is Lily-Rose Depp's character, and I can't say she does a bad job because she's giving it her all in that role but there are moments where her body movements and those convulsions she has when she's possessed by Orlok are somewhat exaggerated, maybe Eggers wanted to do something similar to The Exorcist or those Japanese horror movies but sometimes he crosses the line and it ends up being a bit cringe instead of scary. The psychic connection between Ellen and Orlok which is basically the heart of the whole movie never became completely clear to me, I know she was alone and called someone or something when she was young and that awakened the vampire but it would have been good to have more context about why specifically her, what happened in her life that led her to that point, those things are never explained well and that makes the second half of the movie feel a bit empty. Willem Dafoe appears as Professor Von Franz who is the Van Helsing version in this story and the guy is great as always, he has that mad scientist energy who believes in the occult and everyone thinks he's out of his mind until it turns out he was right all along, his scenes are the best part of the movie because he gives it a touch of dark humor without taking away the seriousness of the matter.

El problema de la película es que se centra mucho en la historia de Ellen que es el personaje de Lily Rose Depp, y no puedo decir que ella hace un mal trabajo porque está dándolo todo en ese papel pero hay momentos donde sus movimientos corporales y esas convulsiones que tiene cuando está poseída por Orlok son algo exageradas, quizás Eggers quería hacer algo parecido a El Exorcista o a esas películas japonesas de terror pero a veces se pasa de la raya y termina siendo un poco cringe en lugar de dar miedo. La conexión psíquica entre Ellen y Orlok que es básicamente el corazón de toda la película nunca me quedó del todo clara, sé que ella estaba sola y llamó a alguien o algo cuando era joven y eso despertó al vampiro pero hubiera sido bueno tener más contexto sobre por qué específicamente ella, qué fue lo que pasó en su vida que la llevó a ese punto, esas cosas nunca se explican bien y eso hace que la segunda mitad de la película se sienta un poco vacía. William Dafoe aparece como el Profesor Von Franz que es la versión de Van Helsing en esta historia y el tipo es genial como siempre, tiene esa energía de científico loco que cree en lo oculto y todos piensan que está mal de la cabeza hasta que resulta que tenía razón todo el tiempo, sus escenas son lo mejor de la peli porque le da un toque de humor negro sin quitarle seriedad al asunto.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin play the Hardings who are a couple with two daughters and another child on the way, they end up being close victims of all this shit with Orlok and the plague he brings with him, the scene where the girls die attacked by rats is brutal, I didn't expect it and it hit me hard although I feel they could have made that even more disturbing if they had shown a bit more, Eggers holds back in certain moments where I think he should have gone all out and more considering it's a gothic horror movie. The plague itself is something interesting because it's not just that Orlok sucks blood but he also brings disease and death wherever he goes, rats invade the city, people start dying en masse, there are coffins everywhere and that seems apocalyptic which although it may seem a bit repetitive after a while is something that works well in the plot. Simon McBurney plays Herr Knock who is the equivalent of Renfield in this version, the guy is obsessed with Orlok and acts as his servant although in the end he realizes that the Count was never going to give him any power, he was only using him to get to Ellen, his scenes eating pigeons and acting like a madman are good but I feel his character disappears a bit towards the end when he should have had more prominence.

Aaron Taylor Johnson y Emma Corrin interpretan a los Harding que son una pareja con dos hijas y otro hijo en camino, ellos terminan siendo víctimas cercanas de toda esta mierda con Orlok y la plaga que trae consigo, la escena donde las niñas mueren atacadas por las ratas es brutal, no me la esperaba y me pegó fuerte aunque siento que pudieron haber hecho eso aún más perturbador si hubieran mostrado un poco más, Eggers se contiene en ciertos momentos donde creo que debió ir con todo y más tratándose de una película de terror gótico. La plaga en sí es algo interesante porque no es solo que Orlok chupe sangre sino que también trae enfermedad y muerte por donde pasa, las ratas invaden la ciudad, la gente empieza a morir en masa, hay ataúdes por todos lados y eso parece apocalíptico que aunque pueda parecer un poco repetitivo después de un rato es algo que funciona bien en la trma. Simon McBurney hace de Herr Knock que es el equivalente a Renfield en esta versión, el tipo está obsesionado con Orlok y actúa como su sirviente aunque al final se da cuenta que el Conde nunca le iba a dar ningún poder, solo lo estaba usando para llegar a Ellen, sus escenas comiendo palomas y actuando como un loco son buenas pero siento que su personaje desaparece un poco hacia el final cuando debería haber tenido más protagonismo.

The most controversial part of the movie is all that sexual and lust theme that exists between Ellen and Orlok, this isn't a romantic love story, here it's something much darker and more disturbing, there's a connection between these two characters that is both physical and spiritual. When Orlok feeds on his victims the way he does it looks a lot like a sexual act, there are thrusting and sucking movements that are clearly intentional, Ellen seems to enjoy on some level when Orlok comes to visit her in her dreams or when he possesses her and that's uncomfortable because on one hand she's married to Thomas and says she loves him but on the other hand she has this connection with the vampire that she can't control. The final scene where she sacrifices herself to destroy Orlok seemed interesting to me because she uses her body as bait, she offers herself to him voluntarily knowing that if she keeps him busy until the sun comes up he's going to die, Orlok can't resist her even knowing that the dawn light is going to kill him and that says a lot about his nature, the guy describes himself as an appetite and nothing more and in the end that's what destroys him. Orlok's death hits you because his blood comes out through his eyes, his legs wither, his whole body collapses while the pure light of dawn consumes him, it's an image that stayed with me after the movie ended.

La parte más controversial de la película es todo ese tema sexual y de lujuria que existe entre Ellen y Orlok, esto no es una historia de amor romántico, acá es algo mucho más oscuro y perturbador, hay una conexión entre estos dos personajes que es tanto física como espiritual. Cuando Orlok se alimenta de sus víctimas la forma en que lo hace se parece mucho a un acto sexual, hay movimientos de empuje y succión que claramente son intencionales, Ellen parece disfrutar en cierto nivel cuando Orlok viene a visitarla en sus sueños o cuando la posee y eso es incómodo porque por un lado ella está casada con Thomas y dice amarlo pero por otro lado tiene esta conexión con el vampiro que no puede controlar. La escena final donde ella se sacrifica para destruir a Orlok ,e pareció interesante porque usa su cuerpo como carnada, se ofrece a él voluntariamente sabiendo que si lo mantiene ocupado hasta que salga el sol va a morir, Orlok no puede resistirse a ella incluso sabiendo que la luz del amanecer lo va a matar y eso dice mucho sobre su naturaleza, el tipo se describe a sí mismo como un apetito y nada más y al final eso es lo que lo destruye. La muerte de Orlok te impaxta porque su sangre sale por los ojos, sus piernas se marchitan, todo su cuerpo colapsa mientras la luz pura del amanecer lo consume, es una imagen que se quedó conmigo despu´pes de qie terminó la peli.

Now something I have to be honest about is that this movie has pretty obvious pacing problems, it lasts more than two hours and it felt much longer than that to me, there are whole parts in the middle where things drag and not much happens, a lot of people talking about what they should do but without actually doing anything, Thomas and the doctors plan to go to Orlok's hideout to kill him but that's something that's underdeveloped and that's supposedly the action climax of the movie. The way they handle time is also confusing, there are moments where it seems like days or weeks pass but then there are scenes that make you think everything is happening in a matter of hours, another thing that didn't convince me was that mustache of Orlok's and the big head he has, I understand Eggers wanted to move away from the classic look but it seemed more comical to me and less scary. What I can't deny is the visual part, every shot looks like a painting, the use of natural light is impressive and everything seems period-appropriate, the problem is that all that doesn't compensate for a story that's too familiar, we've seen this Dracula story a thousand times already and although Eggers puts his own spin on it in the end it's still the same, of course if you've never seen a Dracula or Nosferatu adaptation before then this is going to blow your mind but if you already know the material it's very predictable. My score for Nosferatu 2024 is 7/10 although it's a good movie it wasn't spectacular or ambitious.

Ahora algo con lo que debo ser honesta es que esta película tiene problemas de ritmo bastante evidentes, dura más de dos horas y me pareció que fue mucho más larga que eso, hay partes enteras en el medio donde la cosa se arrastra y no pasa mucho, mucha gente hablando sobre lo que deberían hacer pero sin realmente hacer nada, Thomas y los doctores planean ir al refugio de Orlok para matarlo pero eso es algo que está poco desarrollado y eso que supuestamente es el clímax de acción de la película. La forma en que manejan el tiempo también es confusa, hay momentos donde parece que pasan días o semanas pero luego hay escenas que te hacen pensar que todo está pasando en cuestión de horas, otra cosa que no me convenció fie ese bigote de Orlok y la cabeza grande que tiene, entiendo que Eggers quería alejarse del look clásico pero me pareció más bien algo cómico y menos aterrador. Lo que no puedo negar es la parte visual cada toma parece una pintura, el uso de luz natural es impresionante y todo parece de la época, el problema es que todo eso no compensa una historia que es demasiado familiar, hemos visto esta historia de Drácula mil veces ya y aunque Eggers le pone su propio toque al final sigue siendo lo mismo, claro si nunca has visto una adaptación de Drácula o Nosferatu antes entonces esto te va a volar la cabeza pero si ya conoces el material es muy predecible. Mi puntuación para Nosferatu 2024 es 7/10 aunque es una buena peli no fue espectacular ni ambiciosa.
