I saw a movie Perfect Days that at first I wasn't quite sure where it was going because it has a very slow pace but as I got used to the pace I realized that it is a story that seeps into the consciousness because it is about satisfaction in the small moments of life. It has drama and a good plot, it's about a man in Tokyo, his name is Hirayama who works as a cleaner and has a routine life, he lives in a simple apartment, reads his books at night, waters his plants, goes to his job which he does with great care and comes back to do everything the next day. I liked that the routine is not shown as something sad or frustrating but rather Hirayama does it with satisfaction, I realized that I often find myself complaining in the mornings or even at night about how tired I am and that the next day I have to go back to the routine to work, and in this world that goes so fast we often want more and this character shows that there is peace in simplicity.

I liked about Perfect Days that it is not the typical story that one usually expects, there is nothing dramatic that explains why the protagonist lives this way, nor that big change that makes him live his life to the fullest by abandoning his routine. Instead, the film respects the character's choices, while showing how life that is carefully constructed can have interruptions and open us up to new emotions and connections. Here the beautiful thing is that something monotonous can have a lot of value and meaning, Hirayama is proud of his life and his work, he cleans every public toilet as if it were a work of art, I found this so beautiful, because I have always thought that whatever we do, we should do it well, with kindness and love and I think that's what they want to reflect here. The routine is altered by several things but the most important is when his niece suddenly appears because she has run away from home and when her sister comes to look for her there is a tension between them, there is a conflict from the past that was not resolved, but that is what I said at the beginning, this does not change his orderly life, it just makes us see other aspects of his character.

I thought that Koji Yakusho's performance as Hirayama is the heart of this movie, although he doesn't speak much he manages to transmit a lot with his expressions and small gestures, he feels like a kind and nice man, it makes you hug him. I read an interview with him on the internet and he said that he prefers roles where he doesn't have to speak much because for him films express themselves more powerfully in the moments where there are no words, I agree and I also agree that it fits very well with what Perfect Days proposes that communicates many things without being said explicitly. In the supporting characters are Tokio Emoto in the role of Takashi the young assistant of Hirayama, Arisa Nakano as Niko the niece, Aoi Yamada as Aya, and Min Tanaka who is a man who lives on the street.

I think in an ordinary movie they would show the protagonist as someone who needs to break free from his routine and take risks to be happy but luckily the director doesn't go that route and presents Hirayama's life as valid and meaningful on his own terms and I just got to thinking and most people's lives are like that, it's routine, it's not that it romanticizes poverty or that everyone should aspire to such a minimalist life, I think it rather invites us to think about what gives us happiness and fulfillment and at least this man finds joy in simple things like listening to music on a cassette or the satisfaction of a job well done. He is not shown as someone who has settled for less or given up on life, but as someone who sees and appreciates what many of us overlook in our constant striving for more, this made me think about what makes me happy and that is coming home and seeing my children healthy, preparing a recipe and having it turn out tasty and my family likes it, seeing the sky and its grandeur, going to the gym even if it is two days a week, and of course having a good day at work, that is what this movie talks about valuing the little things.

The ending of Perfect Days makes you think a lot, throughout the movie Hirayama keeps his routine despite the changes and the last scene shows him driving to work as usual, but this time his emotions are different and he no longer has his usual smile but he feels sad because of the confrontation with his sister and this doesn't mean that his life is going to change but he is showing and acknowledging his feelings, the movie doesn't say what will happen next, if Hirayama will make changes or go back to his routine without changes it just leaves us with doubt, just like life that leaves us many times without a clear solution. My score for Perfect Days is 8/10 because it is an uncommon movie and in this world that goes so fast, with the bombardment of social networks, consumerism, comparisons there is a person who finds satisfaction in simple things and routine, plus the movie lets you draw your own conclusions and made me reflect on my own life and what makes me happy.

I realized that it is a story that seeps into the consciousness because it is about satisfaction in the small moments of life.

This exactly, while I didn't fully kept my focus, it afterward turned out to become the best movie I watched in 2024 and it also made me watch Paris, Texas which also is directed by Wim Wenders in 2025 which will for sure be the best movie that I watched in 2025 as it instantly got in my top 10 of all time. I'm looking forward to watching some more movies from Wim Wenders.

I haven't seen his other movies but after this one I started researching and said I was going to make time to see some of them, now that you mention Paris, Texas I'm sure I'll follow your recommendation. The truth is that Perfect Days surprised me
