Straw (2025) - REVIEW - [ENGLISH-SPANISH]
I was left with my mouth open more than once with Straw directed by Tyler Perry, I think what I liked the most was the brutal performance of Taraji P. Henson who steals the movie from beginning to end, the woman gave everything and carries the story on her shoulders like a true champion. This movie has those things typical of the director such as that melodramatic touch that maybe sometimes is a little exaggerated but here it is more delicate than in other movies and that is very noticeable because the story flows better and does not feel as heavy as other times. The main character's name is Janiyah and she is a single mother who is literally living the worst day of her life, with problems piling up one after another, this is the living image of all the problems coming together without letting you breathe. The situation can't take it anymore and explodes unexpectedly, here is a change that I really didn't see coming.
Me quedé con la boca abierta más de una vez con Straw que es dirigida por Tyler Perry, creo que lo que más me gustó fue esa actuación brutal de Taraji P. Henson que se roba la película de principio a fin, la mujer lo dio todo y carga con la historia en sus hombros como una verdadera campeona. Esta peli tiene esas cosas típicas del director como es ese toque melodramático que que quizás a veces es un poco exagerado pero acá es más delicado que en otras pelis y eso se nota mucho porque la historia fluye mejor y no se siente tan pesada como otras veces. La protagonista se llama Janiyah y es una madre soltera que está viviendo literalmente el peor día de su vida, con problemas que se van acumulando uno tras otro, esta es la viva imagen de que todos los problemas llegan juntos sin dejarte respirar. La situación no se puede aguantar más y explota de forma inesperada, aquí hay un cambio que a verdad no vi venir.
I liked that the director managed to keep me hooked during the whole movie, something that didn't happen with all his movies, that's why I say he left me with my mouth open, I think this time it worked for me. The plot with Janiyah fighting against a world that seems to be against her from the moment she wakes up, between taking care of her sick daughter, dealing with economic problems, having to deal with a despot boss and also having to put up with abusive situations at work pushes you towards the emotional part. Henson gave a good performance showing this constant struggle, every gesture and every expression transmits the desperation and exhaustion of this woman who is giving her all and getting nothing in return, of course you put yourself in her shoes because how many times have we not felt that way. There is a lot of tension in this film because those problems that are an everyday thing accumulate and although some seem exaggerated you feel that if it can be real it can happen to someone, we do not realize the problems that others have and when you think you're bad you find out that there is someone worse than you. There are also other actors who contribute quite a bit to the plot such as Teyana Taylor who is the detective trying to mediate the banking crisis and Sherri Shepherd as the bank manager who shows a human side in the midst of all this chaos.
Me gustó que el director logró mantenerme enganchada durante toda la película, cosa que no me pasaba con todas sus películas por eso digo que me dejó con la boca abierta, creo que esta vez si funcionó para mí. La trama con Janiyah luchando contra un mundo que parece estar en su contra desde que se despierta, entre cuidar a su hija enferma, lidiar con problemas económicos, tener que calarse un jefe déspota y aparte aguantas situaciones abusivas en el trabajo te va empujando hacia la parte emocional. Henson hizo una buena actuación mostrando esta lucha constante, cada gesto y cada expresión transmiten la desesperación y el cansancio de esta mujer que está dándolo todo y no recibe nada a cambio, por supuesto uno se pone en los zapatos de ella porque cuantas veces no nos hemos sentido así. Hay mucha tensión en esta película porque esos problemas que son algo cotidiano se van acumulando y aunque algunos parezcan exagerados sientes que si puede ser real eso le puede llegar a pasar a alguien, no nos damos cuenta de los problemas que tienen los demás y cuando crees que estás mal te enteras que hay alguien peor que tú. También hay otros actores que aportan bastante a la trama como Teyana Taylor que es la detective que intenta mediar en la crisis bancaria y Sherri Shepherd como la gerente del banco que muestra un lado humano en medio de todo este caos.
The pace of the movie is maintained, you always feel that tension, there came a point that I was already in favor of the poor woman with everything that happened to her hehehe, what impacted me the most was that change in the plot where everything you think it was not, I think this was risky on Perry's part but the guy decided to take a gamble and it turned out very well. When it is revealed that Janiyah's daughter had died the night before from a seizure and the whole movie had been showing the hallucinations of a grieving mother, I felt it was a deeper and more emotional story. Here Perry handles showed how trauma can manifest in complex ways and how people can create alternate realities to deal with losses that are beyond your ability to process. The film deals with these issues of mental health, grief and resilience in an authentic way despite how melodramatic it may be, it seems to me that this gets many of us to reflect on how people who are struggling with traumas we don't even know about are sometimes treated.
El ritmo de la película se mantiene, siemore sientes esa tensión de verdad llegó un punto que yo estaba ya por favor pobre mujer con todo lo que le pasaba jejeje, lo que más me impacto fue ese cambio en la trama donde todo lo que crees que era no es, creo que esto fue arriesgado por parte de Perry pero el tipo decidió jugársela y le quedó muy bien. Cuando se revela que la hija de Janiyah había muerto la noche anterior por una convulsión y que toda la película había estado mostrando las alucinaciones de una madre destrozada por el duelo, sentí que era una historia más profunda y emotiva. Aqui Perry maneja mostró cómo el trauma puede manifestarse de formas complejas y cómo las personas pueden crear realidades alternas para lidiar con pérdidas que van más allá de tu capacidad para procesarlas. La película trata estos temas de salud mental, duelo y resistencia de una manera auténtica a pesar de lo melodramático que pueda ser, me parece que esto logra a que muchos reflexionemos como a veces son tratadas las personas que están luchando con traumas que ni siquiera sabemos.
Like everything else there are things that I didn't like like like certain characters that you can tell are there just to fuck around and shape the story, like the abusive boss played by Glenn Turman, who although he acts well, his character is so evil that he seems ridiculous and certain situations build up so intensely that sometimes you don't believe them even with all the drama that is there. There are things that are talked about in the movie that seem to give too much explanation like when trying to convey those messages about inequality and injustice and well even though the story has its flaws Henson ate it up because he manages to connect emotionally with what he is going through.
Como todo hay cosas que no me gustaron como ciertos personajes que se nota que están allí solo para joder y formar la historia, como el jefe abusivo interpretado por Glenn Turman, que aunque actúa bien, su personaje es tan malvado que parece ridículo y ciertas situaciones se acumulan de manera tan intensa que a veces no las crees incluso con todo el drama que hay. Hay cosas que se hablan en la peli que parece que dan demasiadas explicaciones como cuando se intenta transmitir esos mensajes sobre desigualdad e injusticia y bueno aunque la historia tiene sus defectos Henson se la comió porque logra conectar emocionalmente con lo que está viviendo.
My score for Straw is 7/10, I think it was a good job by Perry and it has improved quite a bit it feels like a significant step forward for Tyler Perry as a storyteller, showing a complex story without falling into overacting or too much melodrama. Taraji Henson is the real star here, that much is undeniable and I think she deserves quite a bit of credit because she completely elevated the entire story. Straw is not a perfect movie, but I thought it was genuine and I liked it a lot because it shows those struggles of single mothers, mental health and how society sometimes puts some people who are vulnerable aside when what they need is support. I would say that if you have time to watch it give it a chance, try to watch it when you feel good because you will find pure chaos, the good thing is that it will make you reflect and be thankful for the life you have and the acting is excellent, I watched it on Netflix.
Mi puntuación para Straw es 7/10, creo que fue un buen trabajo de Perry y que ha mejorado bastante se siente como un paso adelante significativo para Tyler Perry como narrador, mostrando una historia compleja sin caer en sobreactuación o mucho melodrama. Taraji Henson es la verdadera estrella aquí, eso es algo innegable y yo creo que merece bastante reconocimiento porque elevó por completo toda la historia. Straw no es una película perfecta, pero me pareció genuina me gustó bastante porque muestra esas luchas de las las madres solteras, la salud mental y cómo la sociedad a veces pone de lado a algunas personas que son vulnerables cuando lo que necesitan es un apoyo. Yo te diría que si tienes tiempo de verla le des una oportunidad eso si trata de verla cuando te sientas bien porque te vas a encontrar puro caos lo bueno es que si te hara reflexionar y agradecer por la vida que tienes y la actuación es excelente, yo la vi en Netflix.

De verdad que esta película me dejó frío; realmente no sé hasta que punto una persona puede soportar tantos eventos negativos. Muchas veces la mente nos puede engañar y nos crea una realidad inexistente; un película que me dejó pensando mucho y con un final que jamás esperé. Buena reseña.
Esta película es una lección para la vida, es cruda y desgarradora como la vida misma para algunas personas que solo buscan continuar su camino sin herir a otros, pero el destino, las demás personas o quien sabe qué puede hacer que de un momento a otro pierdan el control, lo que nos trae a la realidad sobre nuestra propia fragilidad, no somos super héroes que pueden con todo, tenemos límites.
