Todd Philips, the film's director, returns with the sequel to his multimillion-dollar first installment, which deserved an Oscar, in a suicidal bet. There was a forged promise; the winning formula lay in the histrionic mastery of the always immense Joaquin Phoenix alongside Lady Gaga's vocal skill on stage, it would be a success bomb. This is perhaps the main aspect to consider as a cause of its epic failure; the boundary between genres is quite blurred and this causes the viewer to feel lost. Together with a Lady Gaga in the role of Harley Quinn, who projects an underestimation of her voice except for 'They Long to Be Close to You', a song that illustrates her character's obsession with Arthur Fleck's alter ego, which allows her to shine.

There are facets of this movie that I would like to focus my vision on. The script continues the existential conflict of Arthur Fleck, who was previously presented to us as a man victimized by all kinds of abuse since his childhood, unable to see himself as a graceless clown, rejected by his mother, in short, a wonderfully rich character that Joaquin Phoenix, who for me is one of the greatest actors in the Hollywood guild, has managed to portray monumentally, bringing interesting nuances to the DC Comics supervillain. Joaquin Phoenix is capable of singing alongside Lady Gaga; he previously demonstrated his talent for it when he excellently portrayed Johnny Cash. It is known that all the musical numbers in the film were sung live, and despite the harsh criticism of both lead actors' performances, for me it is a tremendous success because they carry an implicit spectrum of emotions that guarantees verisimilitude and humanizes the characters.

This is not a musical, it has been said, but why not embrace the mechanisms that the script appropriates to understand it from those elements that enhance the feeling of romance between two beings bound by a shared psychotic disorder. The plot may be too connected to the previous one; this time it has little to add to Arthur Fleck's character after the exhaustive prior study, but it shows us the decay and the end of the villain, who manages to steal empathy, up to his ridiculous death, which I believe is a metaphor for the bad joke that was his whole life. Cuando se habla de musical, el espectador común tiende a asociar a este género del cine con una historia de corte ligero, en la que el guión potencia más la emoción desde el desempeño del elemento sonoro como principal recurso narrativo, con un happy end, generalmente. Grandes clásicos sustentan este concepto, sin embargo ¿quién asevera que no es posible generar historias un tanto más caóticas y oscuras correspondiendo a estos códigos? Ahí tenemos a Cabaret o Sweenie Todd, el barbero diabólico de Flet Street (sobre la cual versará mi próxima reflexión).

Si bien esta secuela presenta algunos momentos coreográficos y muchos guiños y citas de películas como El Carro de la Banda, no se puede decir que sea un musical propiamente. Pero como todo no es lo que parece, sin ser una especialista en la materia, me gustaría llegar un poco más allá de lo aparente. Existen aristas de esta película sobre las que me gustaría centrar mi visión. El guión da continuidad al conflicto existencial de un Arthur Fleck que antes nos fuera presentado como un hombre víctima de toda clase de abusos desde su infancia, incapaz de asumirse como un clown sin gracia, rechazado por su madre, en fin, un riquísimo personaje que Joaquin Phoenix, quien para mí es uno de los más grandes actores del gremio hollywoodense, ha sabido caracterizar monumentalmente, proponiendo matices interesantes al supervillano de DC Comics. Joaquin Phoenix es capaz de cantar junto a Lady Gaga, antes demostró su talento para ello cuando interpretó a Johnny Cash, excelentemente. Es conocido que todos los números musicales del film se cantaron en vivo y pese a que la crítica fue dura con el performance de ambos actores protagónicos, para mí es un acierto tremendo por cuanto lleva implícito un espectro de emociones que garantiza el verismo y humaniza a los personajes.

Esto no es un musical, ya se ha dicho, pero por qué no asumir los resortes de los cuales se apropia el guión para comprenderle, desde esos elementos que potencian la sensación del romance entre dos seres que se unen por un trastorno psicótico compartido. La trama puede estar demasiado conectada con la anterior, en esta occasion tiene poco que añadir al personaje de Arthur Fleck luego del exhaustivo estudio precedente, pero nos muestra la decadencia y el final del villano, que consigue robarse la empatía, hasta su ridícula muerte, que creo metáfora del mal chiste que fue toda su vida. El apuñalamiento en el pasillo de Arkham es el momento final de Arthur quien ya había muerto desde que su amada Harley le abandonara, obsesionada con la máscara tras la que se escondía un frágil ser humano, enfermo de PBA (labilidad emocional por risa), lleno de inseguridades, víctima de sus ciscunstancias, capaz de humanizarse a lo sumo con el simple acto de interpretar “For Once in My Life” y “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" como genuina expresión de ese sentimiento por su amada, el único puro que quizás logró experimentar en su traumática existencia.

Otra de las posibles lecturas del empleo de recursos propios del musical como elementos narrativos dentro de la trama, se me antojan parte de las ilusiones y delirios compartidos de Harley y Arthur. Creo, y así lo percibí, que estos son puentes que traza la historia para metaforizar ese mundo irreal, por momentos sórdido y en otros casos casi tierno, en el que se refugian los protagonistas, ambos bajo sus propias motivaciones.

Así es que Jocker 2: Folie à Deux es simplemente eso, locura de dos manifiesta, un filme que se disfruta si nos logramos despegar de standares y referentes y nos diponemos a conectar con sus bondades, más alla de expectativas y todos los consabidos defectos. Para finalizar me hago eco de las palabras de Ashley Lee en su columna crítica dedicada al fime, tras el estreno en octubre del pasado año, en el rotativo Los Ángeles Times: ¡ Qué bueno que no es un musical!
