¿Qué culpa tiene Fatmagul? (Review) ESP/ENG

I never used to watch Turkish series, movies or soap operas until I came across this gem, many times it had been recommended to me but I didn't want to believe it was so good, until I asked my mum and my sister (who always accompany me to watch movies or series) to give it a chance, and the truth is that we were pleasantly surprised with the high quality of this series, not only in terms of acting but in all aspects, so without further ado, let's start.

Yo no solía ver ni series, ni películas ni telenovelas turcas hasta que me tope con esta joya, muchas veces me la habían recomendado pero yo no había querido creer que era tan buena, hasta que le pedí a mi mamá y a mi hermana (quienes siempre me acompañan a ver películas o series) que le diéramos una oportunidad, y la verdad es que quedamos gratamente sorprendidas con la alta calidad de esta serie, no solo en materia de actuación sino en todos los aspectos, así que sin más preámbulo comencemos.

Overview/Resumen

This series, which consists of two seasons, is based on a book of the same name, tells the story of a young peasant girl, Fatmagul, who lives in a coastal village near Greece, has a modest but happy life, is about to marry a fisherman, Mustafa, and lives with her brother, sister-in-law and nephew because her parents died in an accident when she was a child. Her sister-in-law is insidious, envious and sarcastic, but Fatmagul copes gallantly because she is about to leave that house when she marries her fiancé, however her life took a 180 degree turn when one early morning she went out to the harbour to see Mustafa off (who went fishing) and then was intercepted by four boys who were drunk and high on the beach, three of them began to molest her and later, not knowing what else to do, decided to rape her. One of them, Kerim, was so shocked by the situation that he did not know what to do, he did not participate in the abuse but he did not prevent it either.

Esta serie, la cual consta de dos temporadas, está basada en un libro del mismo nombre, nos narra la historia de una joven campesina, Fatmagul, que vive en un pueblo costero cerca de Grecia, tiene una vida modesta pero feliz, está a punto de casarse con un pescador, Mustafá, y vive con su hermano, cuñada y sobrino debido a que sus padres murieron en un accidente cuando ella era una niña. Su cuñada es insidiosa, envidiosa y sarcástica, pero Fatmagul soporta con gallardía porque está a punto de salir de esa casa cuando se case con su novio, no obstante su vida dio un giro de 180 grados cuando una madrugada salió al puerto a despedir a Mustafá (que se fue a pescar) y entonces fue interceptada por cuatro chicos que estaban borrachos y drogados en la playa, tres de ellos comenzaron a molestarla y posteriormente, al no saber que más hacer, decidieron violarla. Uno de ellos, Kerim, estaba tan pasmado con la situación que no supo que hacer, no participó en el abuso pero tampoco lo impidió.

From that moment on, Fatmagul is traumatized and practically in shock, but when the parents of the three rapists, the Yaşaran family, discover what happened, they begin to erase evidence, even with the help of her sister-in-law, and coerce the girl into marrying Kerim (the young man who was not involved in the rape) in an attempt to put the matter to rest and confuse the authorities, but everything suddenly changes when Kerim, completely tormented, decides to reopen the case and tell the truth.

A partir de ese momento comienza un verdadero calvario, Fatmagul queda traumada y prácticamente en shock, pero cuando los padres de los tres violadores, la familia Yaşaran, descubren lo que sucedió, comienzan a borrar evidencias, incluso con ayuda de la cuñada de ella, y coaccionan a la chica para que se case con Kerim (el joven que no participó en la violación) ya que con esto pretenden zanjar el asunto y confundir a las autoridades, pero todo cambia de pronto cuando Kerim, completamente atormentado, decide reabrir el caso y contar la verdad.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión

This series caught my attention from the first episode because from the moment you know what happened you want justice to be done, the story is completely gripping because it is not the typical romance or narcoseries so common in Latin America, this is a criticism of hypocritical society, of things that happen every day anywhere in the world regardless of race or religion of people, where the power of money takes precedence over reason and justice. The title alludes to a great truth: What is Fatmagul's fault? What is someone's fault for being attacked? Regardless of age, nationality or gender a person who has been attacked in this way should not be judged by society or seen as something dirty, but as what they are, a victim, someone who needs help, support, safety and above all justice.

Esta serie atrapó mi atención desde el primer capítulo porque desde que sabes lo que sucedió quieres que se haga justicia, la historia es completamente atrapante porque no se trata del típico romance o las narcoseries tan comunes de latinoamérica, esta es una crítica a la sociedad hipócrita, a cosas que suceden a diario en cualquier parte del mundo sin importar la raza o religión de las personas, donde el poder del dinero se antepone a la razón y a la justicia. El título hace alusión a una gran verdad ¿Qué culpa tiene Fatmagul? ¿Qué culpa tiene alguien de haber sido atacado? sin importar la edad, la nacionalidad o el sexo de una persona que ha sido atacada de esta forma no debería ser juzgado por la sociedad o vista como algo sucio, sino como lo que es, una víctima, alguien que necesita ayuda, apoyo, seguridad y sobre todo justicia.

This series is told from all points of view, from the victimizers, who think that they only made a mistake but that they have to do their best to hide it, from Fatmagul's boyfriend, Mustafa, who abandoned her because he considered her something dirty, because he thought she was guilty for having been there, from Kerim, the young man who did nothing to save her and does not want to rest until justice is done, of Vural, one of the rapists, who is consumed by guilt, who does not sleep or have peace after that terrible night, and of course it is also told from the point of view of the victim, Fatmagul, who has to fight against many demons, the judging society, the trauma, the panic and the pain of having lost her simple but happy life. In this series we can see the different stages a person like her goes through, how she lets herself be overcome by pain sometimes, or by rage.

Esta serie está contada desde todos los puntos de vista, de los victimarios, que piensan que solo cometieron un error pero que hay que hacer lo posible por esconderlo, del novio de Fatmagul, Mustafá, que la dejó abandonada por considerarla algo sucio, por pensar que ella era culpable por haber estado ahí, de Kerim, el joven que no hizo nada para salvarla y no quiere descansar hasta que se haga justicia, de Vural, uno de los violadores, el cual está consumido por la culpa, que no duerme ni tiene paz luego de esa terrible noche, y desde luego está contada también desde el punto de vista de la víctima, Fatmagul, quien tiene que luchar contra muchos demonios, la sociedad que juzga, el trauma, el pánico y el dolor de haber perdido su vida sencilla pero feliz. En esta serie podemos ver las diferentes etapas por las que pasa una persona como ella, como se deja vencer por el dolor en algunas ocasiones, o por la rabia.

Another aspect that I LOVED was the tremendous evolution of the characters, they are literally not the same when the series begins and when it ends, some involute, they become more sinister and dark, others discover their inner strength and use it to their advantage. On the other hand it is absolutely realistic, everything happens in its own time, neither slow nor fast, and I think this is especially evident in the romance that emerges later between the protagonists, it doesn't just happen, there is a reason for it, it is a romance that goes through a process of denial, acceptance and development, there are traumas involved but also the will to heal, there are psychologists and therapies that will be the key to success.

Otro aspecto que AMÉ fue la tremenda evolución de los personajes, literalmente no son los mismos cuando inicia la serie a cuando terminan, algunos involucionan, se vuelven más siniestros y oscuros, otros en cambio descubren su fuerza interna y la usan a su favor. Por otra parte es absolutamente realista, todo sucede a su debido tiempo, ni lento ni rápido, y creo que esto se evidencia sobre todo en el romance que surge posteriormente entre los protagonistas, no sucede porque sí, hay una razón para ello, es un romance que pasa por un proceso de negación, aceptación y desarrollo, hay traumas de por medio pero también la voluntad de sanar, hay psicólogos y terapias que serán la clave del éxito.

There is a character that stole my heart completely, he is Rami, Fatmagul's older brother, he is slightly retarded, which makes him a very tender, loving and innocent character, but it is that same innocence that makes him easy prey to his wife, who manipulates him at will, yet Rami also goes through several stages until he discovers his own potential, sometimes he can become irascible or violent, or maybe cry like a child, but it is because he does not hide his emotions.

Hay un personaje que se robó mi corazón por completo, se trata de Rami, el hermano mayor de Fatmagul, él tiene un ligero retraso, lo que lo vuelve un personaje muy tierno, amoroso e inocente, pero es esa misma inocencia la que lo vuelve presa fácil de su esposa, quien lo manipula a su antojo, aún así Rami pasa también por varias etapas hasta que descubre su propio potencial, a veces puede volverse irascible o violento, o quizá llorar como un niño, pero es porque no esconde sus emociones.

But the best of all is that each chapter leaves you wanting more, my mum, my sister and I spent hours in front of the computer because we could not stay with the intrigue of knowing what happened, the good thing is that all the problems that arise have effective and very quick solutions, you do not have to spend too much time waiting (which often causes impotence in the viewer) but the greatest satisfaction is when justice is finally done and Fatmagul can feel relief, I won't say much about how the villains' story unfolded because I don't want to give you spoilers, but I can only tell you that it's a tremendously satisfying scene where not a single loose end is left unfinished and you can't help but feel the same joy that the protagonist feels.

Pero lo mejor de todo es que cada capítulo te deja con ganas de más, mi mamá, mi hermana y yo pasábamos horas frente a la computadora porque no podíamos quedarnos con la intriga de saber qué pasó, lo bueno es que todos los problemas que van surgiendo tienen soluciones efectivas y muy rápidas, no tienes que pasar demasiado tiempo esperando (lo que a menudo causa impotencia en el espectador) pero la mayor satisfacción es cuando finalmente se hace justicia y Fatmagul puede sentir alivio, no diré mucho con respecto a como es que se desarrolló la historia de los villanos porque no quiero hacerles spoilers, pero solo les puedo adelantar que es una escena tremendamente satisfactoria donde no queda ni un solo cabo suelto y no puedes evitar sentir la misma alegría que siente la protagonista.

Even if you are not a fan of Turkish productions (as I wasn't either) I recommend this series to start, as you can see, it has a much deeper theme than just romance, it's about justice, hypocrisy, power and forgiveness.
