Ranking of my favorite Ghibli movies [ESP/ENG]

As you know, for a while I dedicated myself to watch and analyze the entire filmography of Ghibli Studios, which allowed me to have a broader criteria than I could have had just reading reviews, and obviously it also led me to make a personal ranking of what I would consider as my 5 favorite films of the studio, which will probably surprise you because I will not include the most emblematic films and which are usually the most known and loved by the audience, in this post I will only reflect my feelings, my perceptions about the film and why I decided to choose them above the others 😉.
Como ustedes saben, durante un tiempo me dediqué a ver y analizar toda la filmografía de los Estudios Ghibli, lo cual me permitió tener un criterio más amplio de lo que yo habría podido tener solo leyendo reviews, y obviamente también me llevó a hacer un ranking personal de lo que yo consideraría como mis 5 películas favoritas del estudio, el cuál probablemente los sorprenderá porque no incluiré las películas más emblemáticas y que normalmente son las más conocidas y queridas por la audiencia, en este post yo solo reflejaré mis sentimientos, mis percepciones acerca del film y porqué decidí elegirlos por encima de los demás 😉
5 Marnie
This movie impacted me for several reasons, not only for that spectacular plot twist, but for the tremendous character development it has and because it leaves you with that feeling of wanting to connect with your past, with your own history and what your roots are, sometimes we have a distorted self-perception because of wounds that we can't see but are there, somewhere in the soul. In this case Marnie was really a medium through which Anna ended up discovering herself. This film talks about discovering the importance of creating and strengthening bonds with family and friends, understanding that we are not and should not be alone, that we need to live in symbiosis with everything around us because we are not self-sufficient, that it is okay to externalize what you feel and that it is in fact the first step to healing.
Esta película me impactó por diversas razones, no solo por ese espectacular giro de trama, sino por el tremendo desarrollo de personajes que tiene y porque te deja con esa sensación de querer conectar con tu pasado, con tu propia historia y lo que son tus raíces, a veces tenemos una autopercepción distorsionada por heridas que no podemos ver pero que están ahí, en algún lugar del alma. En este caso Marnie fue realmente un medio a través del cual Anna terminó descubriéndose a sí misma. Esta película habla acerca de descubrir la importancia de crear y fortalecer lazos familiares y con amistades, entender que no estamos ni debemos estar solos, que necesitamos convivir en simbiosis con todo lo que nos rodea porque no somos autosuficientes, que está bien exteriorizar lo que sientes y que de hecho es el primer paso para poder sanar.
4 The Cat Return
4 El Retorno del gato
This film, like the others is full of symbolism of Japanese culture, which allows us to know it a little more, I love the art and composition that has in each stroke, you can see all the work behind it, but one of the things that caught my attention is in the characters and their powerful phrases, especially there is one that I liked the most and was said by the elegant Baron (an anthropomorphic cat) and is that referring to the Office of Cat Affairs, he tells Haru the following “If someone creates something with passion and care, in this place it will come to life”, On the one hand, I am struck by the fact of the meaning that I myself give it, and I think it refers to the fact that when you create something, whatever it is, a work of art, a composition, whatever, and you really put effort into it, if you like what you do, you make sure to put a bit of your soul into it, and that is the reason why it has “life” is nothing more than a reflection of yourself.
Esta película, al igual que las demás está cargada de simbolismos propios de la cultura nipona, lo cual nos permite conocerla un poco más, amo el arte y la composición que tiene en cada trazo, se nota todo el trabajo que hay detrás, pero una de las cosas que más llamó mi atención está en los personajes y sus frases poderosas, en especial hay una que fue la que más me gustó y fue dicha por el elegante Barón (un gato antropomórfico) y es que haciendo referencia a la Oficina de Asuntos Gatunos, él le dice a Haru lo siguiente "Si alguien crea algo con pasión y esmero, en este lugar cobrará vida" Por una parte me llama la atención por el hecho del significado que yo misma le doy, y es que pienso que se refiere a que cuando tú creas algo, sea lo que sea, una obra de arte, una composición, lo que sea, y de verdad le pones empeño, si te gusta lo que haces, tú te aseguras de poner un poco de tu alma en ello, y esa es la razón por la cual tiene "vida" no es más que el reflejo de ti mismo.
But another similarity that we could apply to life itself falls on another of the main characters, Haru, to be more specific, because if you pay attention you will notice that the more time she spends in the cat kingdom, the more she gets used to being there (even though she knows she does not belong there and does not feel at ease) but the more she gets used to that world and resigns herself to be part of the environment, little by little she mimics it, becoming a real cat. The same happens with us, if we resign ourselves to live a life we do not want for fear of experimenting with what we do want for our lives, we will end up being part of the dreams and ideals of others instead of our own.
Pero otra similitud que podríamos aplicar a la vida misma recae en otro de los personajes principales, Haru, para ser más específica, ya que si ustedes prestan atención se darán cuenta que mientras más tiempo pasa ella en el reino de los gatos, más se acostumbra a estar allí (a pesar de saber que no pertenece allí y no sentirse a gusto) pero mientras más se acostumbra a ese mundo y se resigna a formar parte del entorno, poco a poco se va mimetizando con él, volviéndose un gato real. Lo mismo sucede con nosotros, si nos resignamos a vivir una vida que no deseamos por miedo a experimentar con lo que sí queremos para nuestras vidas, terminaremos formando parte de los sueños e ideales de los demás en lugar de los propios.
3 Kiki's Delivery Service
3 Kiki, Entregas a Domicilio
I really like this movie because it talks about independence and discovering the world by ourselves, Kiki is a young witch with a lot of enthusiasm and a good sense of responsibility, however in her path of discovery she realizes that not everything around her is what it seems, there are people who are visibly nice but inside are selfish and mean, while there are people whose behavior may not match your personality, but could become great allies, protectors or good advisors. The film also tells us about the disconnection with our childhood, the nostalgia of leaving behind many dreams and illusions, friends perhaps, and all that innocence that characterizes us, to enter a more realistic world in which we must learn to walk on our own feet, manage our own money and time and face the challenges of everyday life.
Me gusta muchísimo esta película porque habla sobre la independencia y el descubrimiento del mundo por nosotros mismos, Kiki es una joven bruja con mucho entusiasmo y un buen sentido de responsabilidad, sin embargo en su camino de descubrimiento se da cuenta que a su alrededor no todo es lo que parece, hay personas que visiblemente son agradables pero por dentro son egoístas y ruines, mientras que hay personas cuyo comportamiento quizá desentone con tu personalidad, pero podrían convertirse en grandes aliados, protectores o buenos consejeros. La película también nos habla de la desconexión con nuestra infancia, la nostalgia de dejar atrás muchos sueños e ilusiones, amigos tal vez, y toda esa inocencia que nos caracteriza, para adentrarnos a un mundo más realista en el que debemos aprender a caminar por nuestros propios pies, administrar nuestro propio dinero y tiempo y encarar los desafíos propios del día a día.
2 The Princess Kaguya

What I liked most about this film, besides the story, of course, was its aesthetics with a simple and impressionistic style with defined strokes in some scenes that seem to be painted with watercolor, and in others with diffuse strokes with no color. Now, as for the story, it shows us the life of a girl in a very difficult time for everyone in general. It is a reminder that regardless of ethnicity or social position of human beings, rich or poor, women or men, monarchs or commoners, we are all born with feelings but we can not always express them, we are born free but not everyone can enjoy that freedom, there are those who are hostages of prejudice, of society of what the canons dictate according to age, sex, religion or social status.
Lo que más me gustó de esta película, además de la historia, desde luego, fue su estética con un estilo sencillo e impresionista con trazos definidos en algunas escenas que parecen estar pintados con acuarela, y en otras con trazos difusos con ausencia de color. Ahora bien, en cuanto a la historia, nos muestra la vida de una chica en una época bastante difícil para todos en general. Es un recordatorio de que sin importar la etnia o posición social de los seres humanos, ricos o pobres, mujeres u hombres, monarcas o plebeyos, todos nacemos con sentimientos pero no siempre podemos expresarlos, nacemos libres pero no todos podemos gozar de esa libertad, hay quienes son rehenes de los prejuicios, de la sociedad de lo que dictan los cánones según la edad, el sexo, la religión o la condición social.
1 Only Yesterday
1 Recuerdos de Ayer
This film is similar to Kiki in that it invites us to reflect and introspect about our own lives. In particular, I couldn't help but identify with the protagonist, I felt that in a way they were singing my own story. It is fascinating and at the same time terrifying how much influence our childhood has on the adult we are today, all our past experiences, the way we were raised, the social precepts, everything is vital for the development of our personal growth, for that reason I liked it so much, especially the end, when the protagonist has a kind of symbolic reunion with her inner child, it was simply beautiful.
Esta película es parecida a Kiki con respecto a que nos invita a la reflexión e introspección con respecto a nuestras propias vidas. Particularmente no dejé de identificarme con la protagonista, sentía que de cierta manera estaban cantando mi propia historia. Resulta fascinante y al mismo tiempo aterrador cuanta injerencia tiene nuestra niñez en el adulto que somos hoy en día, todas nuestras experiencias pasadas, la forma en la que nos criaron, los preceptos sociales, todo es es vital para el desarrollo de nuestro crecimiento personal, por esa razón me gustó tanto, sobre todo el final, cuando la protagonista tiene como una especie de reencuentro simbólico con esa niña interior, fue simplemente hermoso.
And well, friends, this has been my own selection after having seen Ghibli's filmography, obviously there are titles more relevant than others, and even with great life lessons, but as I told you in the introduction, these are the ones that I particularly liked the most. Y bien, amigos, esta ha sido mi propia selección luego de haber visto la filmografía de Ghibli, obviamente hay títulos más relevantes que otros, e incluso con grandes lecciones de vida, pero como les dije en la introducción, estos son los que particularmente a mi más me gustaron. Yes, the film that I found a very personal connection with was Only Yesterday, because many times I need to go back in time and reconnect with that little girl I was to understand what I am now and where I can improve. 🤗

Llegue a ver solo Kiki y Marnie, me quedaron pendientes las demas jaja pero las dos primeras que mencione son hermosas, no solo por el estilo de dibujo, sino el aprendizaje que te dejan, el querer conocer tu historia pasada, el tener que crecer y dejar atras todo aquello que te mantenia siendo un infante para dar paso a la vida adulta, sin olvidar nunca de donde provenimos y quienes fuimos, aunque claro, en el transcurso del crecimiento, muchos lo vamos perdiendo u olvidando y estas peliculas nos invita a recordar lo mas bello que teniamos 🙏 ¡Muy buena tu eleccion!
Muchas gracias, me alegra que te haya gustado, Ghibi conserva un estilo y una esencia mágica impresionante que te traslada a ese niño interior, pero sobre todo con la Película Recuerdos de ayer, de verdad te la recomiendo, de hecho es recomendable verla después de los 30 cuando solemos tener crisis existenciales 😊 Solo mirando al pasado podemos entender que nos llevó a ser quienes somos, pero sobre todo a valorar lo afortunados que fuimos los que tuvimos una hermosa niñez, libre de preocupaciones.

Tal como ya sabes, no suelo ver películas animadas pero esa que vi contigo el otro día me encantó, vas a tener que decirme como es que se llamaba, de hecho debería hacer una review sobre ella.
Sí, claro, de verdad que esa fue una gran película, llena de muchas enseñanzas.
Amooooo las películas de studio Ghibli :3 mi favorita es Mi Vecinno Totoro y la que menos La Princesa Mononoke
Una gran selección entre la vasta colección de Studio Ghibli. Entre todas éstas, la que recuerdo con mucho cariño es precisamente "Kiki's delivery service". Por un lado, fue la segunda película de Studio Ghibli que vi (aunque en ese entonces, la distribuía Disney 😅). Por el otro, me fascinó el trabajo que Cristina Hernández hizo al interpretar a Kiki (al punto que prefiero ver su versión a la original en japonés o el redoblaje posterior para Netflix).
Cabe mencionar que no me he dado la oportunidad de ver las otras películas de tu listado, no obstante, siempre me llamó la atención cómo los personajes como Chihiro, San, Sophie, Shiita y especialmente Näusica nos enseñan su proceso de crecimiento personal al momento de resolver el conflicto al cual se enfrentan.
Pronto volveré a darme un tiempo para ver las nuevas aventuras del Barón y la versión de Ghibli del cuento de Kaguya (es uno que conocí cuando apenas tenía doce años). ¡Saludos! ✌️
Princess Kaguya is the only one I've seen from your top and it's really good. I'm surprised you didn't pick the more commercial ones, I think that's cool. Studio Ghibli has so many movies and people only stick with the most well known ones. Very good your ranking!
