I must confess that I am not very assiduous to watch Korean series, except for All of us are dead, The Glory and of course The Squid Game, however my sister insisted me to watch this one together and I accepted even though I was not very interested in the plot, but I wanted to give it a chance just to have something to watch at night. This is Ella Era Bonita, a dorama from 2015, with a nourishing load of emotions where you can find a balance between comedy and drama.
He de confesar que no soy muy asidua a ver series coreanas, salvo All of us are dead, The Glory y desde luego El Juego del Calamar, sin embargo mi hermana me insistió en que viésemos este juntas y acepté aunque no me llamaba mucho la atención la trama, pero quise darle una oportunidad solo por tener algo que ver por las noches. Se trata de Ella Era Bonita, una dorama del año 2015, con una nutrida carga de emociones donde puedes encontrar un balance entre la comedia y el drama.
Overview/Resumen
A beautiful girl meets a boy who is insecure, not only because he is overweight, but because he has a severe trauma after the loss of his mother, he gets nervous on rainy days because his mother died in a traffic accident on a rainy day, and because of all this he has trouble socializing, however the girl gradually gains his trust, especially while they put together a puzzle, they realize that they have tastes in common and eventually become great friends. Time passes and both children are separated by fate, but when he wants to return to his country and his old city to reunite with her friend, now she is the one who is insecure because her physique has changed significantly, no longer being the beautiful girl she used to be, This leads her to make the serious mistake of asking her beautiful friend to replace her on the date, however she did not suspect that he would also be the new boss of the company where she has just started working, so from there will begin the complications if she wants to sustain the lie.
Una niña hermosa conoce a un niño que es inseguro, no solo por su sobrepeso, sino porque tiene un severo trauma tras la pérdida de su madre, se pone nervioso en los días lluviosos ya que su madre murió en un accidente de transito en un día de lluvia, y a causa de todo esto le cuesta socializar, sin embargo la niña se va ganando su confianza poco a poco, sobre todo mientras arman un rompecabezas, se dan cuenta de que tienen gustos en común y finalmente se vuelven grandes amigos. El tiempo pasa y ambos niños se separan por azares del destino, pero cuando él quiere regresar a su país y a su antigua ciudad a reencontrarse con su amiga, ahora es ella quien se muestra insegura debido a que su físico cambió notablemente, dejando de ser la hermosa chica que antes era, esto la lleva a cometer el grave error de pedirle a su amiga hermosa que la suplante en la cita, sin embargo ella no sospechaba que él sería también el nuevo jefe de la empresa donde ella acaba de entrar a trabajar, así que a partir de allí comenzarán las complicaciones si ella quiere sostener la mentira.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión
This dorama is not exactly a cliché, since unattractive protagonists are not really abundant, and much less Asian, however I did find it terribly conflicting the fact that Kim Hye-jin (the protagonist) continued to be in love with her despot and rude boss, even when she knew that he was her old childhood friend and he did not know it, it is not ethical, nor good nor normal that he only treats his friends with respect and even deference while he treats others with irony and even mockery. On the other hand, although the series is full of absurd and funny situations, the main character sometimes made me tired due to her extreme clumsiness, she really did things that nobody would do in a normal environment, although of course, I guess I should not take the series too seriously...
Este dorama no es precisamente un cliché, ya que las protagonistas poco agraciadas no abundan en realidad, y mucho menos asiáticas, sin embargo sí que me resultaba terriblemente conflictivo el hecho de que Kim Hye-jin (la protagonista) continuara enamorada de su déspota y grosero jefe, aún y cuando ella sabía que era su viejo amigo de la infancia y él no lo supiera, no es ético, ni bueno ni normal que él solo trate con respeto y hasta con deferencia a sus amigos mientras que a los demás los trata con ironías y hasta burlas. Por otra parte, si bien la serie está llena de situaciones absurdas y graciosas la protagonista a veces me llegaba a cansar debido a su extrema torpeza, de verdad hacía cosas que nadie haría en un entorno normal, aunque claro está, supongo que no debo tomarme demasiado enserio la serie.
On the other hand I really enjoyed the scenes between Kim Hye-jin and Kim Shin-hyuk because honestly he was extremely funny. When he first saw her, Kim Hye-jin was wearing pants that came above her ankle and exposed her socks, which reminded him of Michael Jackson, so he started calling her “Jackson” from then on. The relationship between them gradually became a solid friendship, almost a brotherhood and they had very enjoyable interactions for the audience because of how absurd and hilarious they were, but later I was sad to see him falling in love with her, but Kim Hye-jin only had eyes for her boss 🤦♀. Yes, I haven't felt such frustration since Betty rejected the Frenchman to stay with Armando Mendoza in “I Am Ugly Betty”.
Por otra parte llegué a disfrutar mucho las escenas entre Kim Hye-jin y Kim Shin-hyuk porque honestamente él era extremadamente gracioso. Cuando él la vio por primera vez Kim Hye-jin tenía unos pantalones que le llegaban por encima del tobillo y que dejaban sus calcetines al descubierto, lo que a él le recordó a Michael Jackson, así que desde ese entonces empezó a llamarla “Jackson”. La relación entre ellos poco a poco se fue volviendo una sólida amistad, casi una hermandad y tenían interacciones muy disfrutables para la audiencia debido a lo absurdas e hilarantes que eran, pero posteriormente me dio tristeza ver que él se iba enamorando de ella, pero Kim Hye-jin solo tenía ojos para su jefe 🤦♀. Sí, yo no sentía tanta frustración desde que Betty rechazó al francés para quedarse con Armando Mendoza en “Yo Soy Betty la fea”
The soundtrack is very good, I really love it, my favorite songs are Only You and Thumping, especially the latter which is also the opening theme of the series, the rhythm makes you think of a nice summer day, well, at least it gives me that feeling 🤗.
El soundtrack es muy bueno, de verdad que me encanta, mis canciones favoritas son Only You y Thumping, sobre todo esta última que es también el tema de apertura de la serie, el ritmo te hace pensar en un lindo día de verano, bueno, al menos a mi me da esa sensación 🤗.
It's not a story that has you thinking too much, obviously it has a very simple plot, but if you're a fan of doramas you'll probably love it, and if you're not a fan anyway it will serve to entertain you for a good while 😊.
No es una historia que te ha pensar demasiado, obviamente tiene una trama muy simple, pero si eres fan de los doramas probablemente lo amarás, y si no eres fan de todos modos te servirá para entretenerte por un buen rato 😊.

Hey! I haven't seen this series, but from the way you describe it, you've got me curious! The plot where the friend impersonates her and then the guy turns out to be her boss sounds like it's going to be a real mess, the kind that hooks you in. I totally get your point about the despotic boss—how frustrating when that happens in series! It's great that you at least loved the soundtrack and that it has that balance between comedy and drama that you mention. Maybe I'll check it out.
Yes, the truth is that it has a very good balance between drama and comedy and in fact it has a lot of comic relief, it is good to have a good time away from boredom.
