Hello friends, today I want to talk about a beautiful film from 1993 called "The Secret Garden" based on the novel of the same name by the French writer Hodgson Burnett, and which brings back beautiful memories from my childhood, both the novel and the film. I recently re-watched it and received a wonderful accumulation of emotions, so I couldn't help but share them with you through this post.

First of all it's important to know that this story also has cartoon versions and even a remake made in 2019, however for this review I'm only going to focus on the film released in 1993, starring Kate Maberly, Andrew Knott and Heydon Prowse.

Historia/Story

Mary Lennox is a rebellious girl, daughter of a British aristocratic family born in India, when her parents die, she is moved to her uncle's house in England, Mery finds it difficult to adapt to her new solitary life in that huge mansion, she feels imprisoned and misunderstood but also terribly lonely, however, as she is curious, as she wanders around the house and its surroundings she discovers wonderful things, a new friend with whom she can play daily and also a cousin of hers who was relegated to one of the rooms of the mansion, but without a doubt Mary's most amazing discovery is a majestic garden that is abandoned and covered by weeds and a thick wall, which can only be accessed by means of a key that she soon gets her hands on.

One of the things I like most about the secret garden is the huge contrast between the dreary Craven mansion and the beauty and candour of the secret garden - when it is at its best, of course, because at the beginning it is a similarly lonely, dead and empty place. I believe that both the house and the garden (as Mary found it) are a representation of the feelings of both Mary and Colin and his father Lord Archibald, each suffering for different reasons but equally lonely, and in this respect I must compliment the fotography of the film very highly, as it suits the story very well, with dark, oppressive tones that make us feel that the place is unpleasant, dull or even unnerving.

So much so that Lord Archibald prefers to be away from home all the time as he cannot bear the oppressive aura of the house. After the death of his wife, he could not overcome the grief and did not even take care of his only son Colin, who was practically hidden away in one of the rooms, pale and useless in the legs due to his confinement. When Mary met her cousin they became good friends over time, despite their hostile personalities, Colin was haughty, rude and petulant, just like Mary, but he was much more unbearable and pretended to order her around, and it was perhaps at that moment that she was horrified to see her personality reflected in her cousin.

Undoubtedly my favourite character is Dickon Sowerby, a boy that Mary met during her walks and who is the younger brother of one of the house maids, this boy is the opposite of Colin, he is cheerful, healthy, smiling and has a great ability to communicate with animals, it was thanks to him that Mary learned everything she needed to know about plants and their care, so together they were recovering the abandoned garden, giving it back its former splendour. In this sense we can also appreciate the evolution of Mary's character, who becomes less hostile as she opens her heart to new adventures and friendships, realising that she is not alone and that she has the power to heal and give life to something that was thought to be empty, dead and sterile.

As Colin listens to his cousin's tales of the garden, he begins to imagine what it would be like if he could be there himself, so he decides to leave the shelter of his room, but not before confronting the housekeeper, played by the very talented Maggie Smith (I think she's perfect for playing stern but deep down, big-hearted characters).

However, it was not an easy task for Colin who was used to self-pity and to see his own life from a pessimistic point of view, he was convinced that he would die very soon, but Mary proved him wrong, so Colin also began to evolve in an impressive way, so much so that, with the help of his cousin and his new friend Dickon, he finally learns to walk. It is a very touching moment in which the beauty of the garden stands out. Here the film's photography shows warm colours, a scene full of light that perfectly represents the peace of the place and the joy of the characters.

But one of the most exciting moments of the film is when Lord Archibald Craven arrives at the house and finally in the garden, encouraged by the housekeeper who was very alarmed that his niece Mary was influencing Colin in a negative way and that her actions could damage his health, but when he arrives in the garden, he discovers something astonishing, On the one hand he sees that the place he had left overrun by weeds, forgotten for being the very place where his beloved wife died, is now a paradise again, with the same splendour as before, but on the other hand his son also seems to have blossomed like the garden, looking spritely, healthy, beautiful and above all happy. I find the love with which Archibald looks at his son very moving, as if he is seeing him for the first time.

At the same time I was a little saddened by Mary who for a moment was struck by a rush of envy as she contemplated the love between father and son, perhaps she felt lonely again, and even says that no one wants her.

But Archibald lets his niece know that he is grateful to her for bringing Colin back to life, he makes her feel loved and protected, it is a beautiful scene, with a fascinating photography, which always transmits me happiness and peace, I love the cloudy landscape in the background that also transmits freshness (I love cloudy days).

I'm just a bit sad about Dickon, who was left a bit forgotten and apart from them, which is natural due to the classism of the time, but taking into account that he was a key player in the recovery of the garden and Colin, I think the character deserved a bit more recognition.

That's all for today, my dear cinephile friends, I hope I have awakened fond memories in you and if you haven't seen this beautiful film, I urge you to do so because I'm sure you will love it.

I haven't had the chance to read the book or see the movie (I don't remember it). It's from the early nineties. i'm really trying to remember if i saw it or not. in a while i'll watch the trailer to see if i remember any scene. i have a curiosity: don't you watch current movies? do you only watch old movies? i asked the same question to another user, i'm curious because both are young and it's hard to find young people nowadays who only watch old movies.

I don't know if I have recommended you before to explore the community, since you like movies, you can interact with other users, reading and commenting their posts. Hello, yes, this is certainly an old film, from 1993, of course I've seen current films but I hardly like any of them, that's why I prefer retro films and even silent films.
