Hace unos días ví un meme sobre esta película y me di cuenta de que por alguna razón la había olvidado, a pesar de que era una de mis favoritas durante mi adolescencia. Scott Pilgrim vs. los ex de la chica de sus sueños es una película basada en un cómic de la cual les quiero hablar hoy incluyendo algunos spoilers.

A few days ago I saw a meme about this movie and realized I'd somehow forgotten about it, even though it was one of my favorites growing up. Scott Pilgrim vs. the world is a comic-based movie that I want to talk about today including some spoilers.

Sinopsis | Synopsis

Scott Pilgrim es un jóven músico, con toda la pinta de nerd que te puedas imaginar. Se dedica a tocar el bajo en su banda, lo cual es básicamente lo único que lo motiva.

Sin embargo, todo parece ir bien hasta que un día literalmente conoce a la chica de sus sueños, Ramona Flowers, porque sí, es exactamente igual a la chica con la que siempre soñó. Ramona, aunque un tanto distante y peculiar, también parece interesarse en él, por lo que Scott pasa a obsesionarse perdidamente con ella. Pero un día es repentinamente atacado por un hombre llamado Matthew Patel, quien dice ser «el primer ex novio malvado» de Ramona. Scott de alguna forma logra luchar contra él y ganarle, y Ramona le explica que para estar con ella deberá vencer a sus siete ex novios malvados...

Scott Pilgrim is a young musician, with every bit of nerd you could imagine. He plays the bass in his band, which is basically the only thing that motivates him.

However, everything seems to be going well until one day he literally meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, because yes, she looks exactly like the girl he's always dreamed of. Ramona, although somewhat distant and peculiar, also seems interested in him, so Scott becomes hopelessly obsessed with her. But one day he is suddenly attacked by a man named Matthew Patel, who claims to be Ramona's "first evil ex-boyfriend". Scott somehow manages to fight him off and defeat him, and Ramona explains that to be with her, he must defeat all her seven evil ex-boyfriends...

Esta película fue dirigida por Edgar Wright estrenada en 2010. Como no he leído nada del cómic no puedo decir si es una adaptación fiel o no, pero lo que sí puedo asegurar es que es una película muy divertida y entretenida. Ya la premisa te indica que no puedes esperar nada serio. ¿Un tipo que debe luchar contra los ex de la chica con la que sale? En cuanto a luchar es tal cual como la que esperarías de un cómic, al estilo superhéroe vs. villanos. Así que suena absurdo porque verdaderamente lo es, y por supuesto es la intención al ser una historia que se basa principalmente en la comedia y acción.

Todos los diálogos y la puesta en escena están hechos para hacerte reír, y hasta los actores que escogieron creo que están allí precisamente para resaltar el tono despreocupado y absurdo de la historia, porque nada de esta tiene sentido.

This film was directed by Edgar Wright and released in 2010. Since I haven't read any of the comics, I can't say if it's a faithful adaptation or not, but what I can assure you is that it's a very fun and entertaining film. The premise itself tells you not to expect anything serious. A guy who has to fight the exes of the girl he's dating? As for the fighting, it's exactly what you'd expect from a comic book, I mean a superhero vs. villains kind of style. So it sounds absurd because it truly is, and of course that's the intention, as it's a story based primarily on comedy and action.

All the dialogue and the staging are designed to make you laugh, and I think even the actors they cast are there precisely to emphasize the story's carefree and absurd tone, because none of it makes any sense.

Aunque pudiera decirse que la forma en la que se presentan los personajes es más como la de un vídeo juego, entonces es una mezcla de recursos pero que están bien combinados para que dentro de la ficción tengan sentido. Scott y Ramona van formando su relación a medida que él lucha por ganar la estabilidad entre ellos. Cada ex tiene un «superpoder» más absurdo que el otro al igual que el mismo Scott, y lo que lo hace todo mejor es la actuación de Michael Cera quien es perfecto para el papel de nerd enamorado empedernido que con valentía enfrenta todo por su chica. No sé qué esencia tiene este actor, pero de alguna manera logra enganchar al espectador.

While it could be said that the way the characters are presented is more like a video game, it's a mix of resources, but they're well combined so that they make sense within the fiction. Scott and Ramona develop their relationship as he struggles to find stability between them. Each ex has a "superpower" more absurd than the other, just like Scott himself, and what makes it all better is the performance of Michael Cera, who is perfect for the role of the hopelessly in love nerd who bravely faces everything for his girl. I don't know what essence this actor has, but somehow he manages to hook the viewer.

El estilo de la cinematografía es sencillamente genial, la forma es imitando el estilo cómic además de los elementos de videojuegos lo hace visualmente espectacular. No hay forma de apartar la mirada, los efectos son muy llamativos y muy bien logrados, encajados de forma perfecta para complementar las escenas tipo cómic. Solo por lo visual vale la pena ver esta película. Y por supuesto el el soundtrack también es un complemento espectacular.

The cinematography is simply brilliant; the way it mimics the comic book style, along with the video game elements, makes it visually spectacular. There's no way to tear your eyes away; the effects are striking and beautifully executed, perfectly integrated to complement the comic-style scenes. The visuals alone are worth watching. And of course, the soundtrack is also a spectacular addition.

En cuanto a la parte romántica, que obviamente es el eje central de todo, en momentos resulta bastante tierna. Aunque sí es muy cuestionable las relaciones entre los personajes. Obviamente los ex de Ramona son todos tóxicos, pero ella tampoco es una joya realmente. Y ojo, Scott tampoco lo es. Me explico: Aunque se atraen mutuamente y experimentan momentos de felicidad, también enfrentan problemas de madurez y comunicación.

Al principio todo es lindo. Se conocen y se sienten atraídos el uno por el otro desde el primer momento. Comparten momentos felices, se apoyan mutuamente en sus problemas, además Ramona comienza a abrirse y enfrentar su pasado gracias a Scott, quien a su vez aprende a ser más responsable. Pero por otra parte, Scott muestra signos de inmadurez y egoísmo en varios momentos de la relación, por lo que la pareja tiene dificultades para comunicarse abiertamente sobre sus sentimientos y problemas.

Entonces la relación de Scott y Ramona es una montaña rusa emocional, completamente inestable más allá de la influencia de los exs de ambos. Aunque hay momentos de felicidad y crecimiento, también hay problemas considerables. No se puede decir que sean una «buena» pareja en el sentido tradicional, pero su relación es un reflejo de las complejidades del amor y las relaciones en la vida real.

As for the romantic aspect, which is obviously the central axis of everything, it is quite tender at times. Although the relationships between the characters are very questionable. Obviously, Ramona's exes are all toxic, but she's not really a innocent lamb either. And mind you, neither is Scott. Let me explain: Although they are mutually attracted to each other and experience moments of happiness, they also face maturity and communication issues.

At first, everything is sweet. They meet and are attracted to each other from the very beginning. They share happy moments, support each other through their problems, and Ramona begins to open up and confront her past thanks to Scott, who in turn learns to be more responsible. But on the other hand, Scott shows signs of immaturity and selfishness at various points in the relationship, making it difficult for the couple to communicate openly about their feelings and problems.

So, Scott and Ramona's relationship is an emotional roller coaster, completely unstable beyond the influence of both of their exes. Although there are moments of happiness and growth, there are also considerable problems. They can't be said to be a "good" couple in the traditional sense, but their relationship is a reflection of the complexities of love and relationships in real life.

Así que esta historia es una mezcla de romance, acción y comedia que aunque resulta muy ligera y entretenida de ver, si la miras un poco más detenidamente te das cuenta de que tiene un mensaje importante, que es que las relaciones son complejas, y van mucho más allá de la idealización de una persona o el amor. En las relaciones hay muchos aspectos más profundos, como energía, tiempo, interés, tolerancia, respeto... Tantas cosas que no son solo la atracción o el deseo de estar con alguien.
