Creo que de todas las reseñas de películas que he hecho en esta comunidad podrán notar ya que el drama y el suspenso es lo mío. Esta película mezcla ambas cosas aunque lo más resaltante es en definitiva el suspenso psicológico. Seré sincera, cuando vi la sinopsis junto al reparto no le tenía demasiadas esperanzas, en mi opinión no todos los actores eran adecuados para esos roles. Sin embargo la vi completa por lo que en este post les comento mi opinión.

I think that from all the movie reviews I have done in this community you can already tell that drama and suspense is my thing. This film mixes both genre although the most outstanding thing is ultimately the psychological suspense. I'll be honest, when I saw the synopsis with the cast I didn't had much hope for it, in my opinion not all the actors were suitable for the roles. However, I watched the whole thing so in this post I tell you my opinion about it.

Sinopsis | Synopsis

Como dicen en mi país, «pueblo pequeño, infierno grande». Considero que esta frase describe muy bien esta película ya que nos sitúa en un pequeño pueblo de EEUU en los años 60. Vemos a una pareja joven, Willard un militar que recién llega de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y una camarera llamada Charlotte, quienes se enamoran perdidamente. Comienzan a formar una vida juntos como una familia completamente ordinaria, llegando a tener un niño. Arvin Rusell era su nombre.

La familia era feliz con poco puesto que lo verdaderamente importante era el tenerse a ellos mismos. Sin embargo Charlotte se encuentra inesperadamente padeciendo una enfermedad terminal que acaba con su vida. Poco tiempo después Willard tomaría las peores decisiones en medio del duelo y la desesperación de no poder haber salvado al amor de su vida, mientras el pequeño Arvin presencia absolutamente todo, quedando traumatizado para siempre.

Aún así no termina allí su historia, puesto que en su adultez él enfrentaría sus propios demonios y los de otros.

La maldad estará presente a todas horas.

As they say in my country, "small town, big hell". I consider that this phrase describes this film very well since it places us in a small town in the United States in the 60s. We see a young couple, Willard, a soldier who has just arrived from World War II and a waitress named Charlotte, who fall madly in love with each other. They begin to form a life together as a completely ordinary family, eventually having a child. Arvin Russell was his name.

The family was happy with little since what was truly important was having themselves. However, Charlotte unexpectedly finds herself suffering from a terminal illness that ends her life. Shortly after, Willard would make the worst decisions in the midst of grief and despair at not having been able to save the love of his life, while little Arvin witnesses absolutely everything, being traumatized forever.

Even so, his story does not end there since in his adulthood he would face his own demons and those hiding within others around him.

The evil will be present at all times.

Los personajes y actores | The characters and actors

Como dije, a pesar de que la premisa me encantaba el elenco no tanto. Excepto por Bill Skarsgård y Sebastian Stan pensaba que el resto de actores no iban a encajar bien en sus papeles, menos aún Robert Pattinson y Tom Holland PERO gracias a los cielos yo estaba muy equivocada.

Resultó que de quienes menos esperaba algo bueno fueron quienes me sorprendieron totalmente. Yo estaba muy acostumbrada a ver a Holland como Spiderman y a Pattinson como Edward Cullen por lo que hasta ese momento no había visto que fueran capaces de interpretar roles completamente opuestos a los que son conocidos. Holland demuestra la indecisión, frustración y trauma de un chico que no hizo más que sufrir toda su vida. Aunque hay momentos en los que me pareció que la actuación fue floja la verdad es que en la mayoría de la película hizo un trabajo bastante bueno.

Like I said even though I loved the premise, i didn't loved the cast so much. Except for Bill Skarsgård and Sebastian Stan I thought that the rest of the actors were not going to fit well in their roles, especially Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland BUT thank goodness I was very wrong.

It turned out that those who I least expected anything good from were the ones who totally surprised me. I was very used to seeing Holland as Spiderman and Pattinson as Edward Cullen, so until that moment I had not seen that they were capable of playing roles completely opposite to those they are known for. Holland demonstrates the indecision, frustration and trauma of a boy who did nothing but suffer his entire life. Although there are moments where I thought the acting was a bit weak, the truth is that for the majority of the film he did a pretty good job.

En cuanto a Pattinson admito que mantenía mi prejuicio de que no era tan buen actor por lo que hizo en la saga de Crepúsculo pero definitivamente es un actor que ha evolucionado enormemente así como ha escogido mucho mejor los papeles que interpreta para así demostrar su verdadero potencial. No me mal interpretes, yo estaba enamorada de Robert en sus inicios porque me parecía muy atractivo, pero en este papel hizo un trabajo tan bueno que me hacía odiarlo cada vez que estaba en pantalla. Odiaba mucho al personaje y eso es una señal de su excelente interpretación del predicador que oraba en nombre de Dios pero cometía pecados atroces cuando la iglesia cerraba sus puertas.

As for Pattinson, I admit that I kept my prejudice that he was not such a good actor because of what he did in the Twilight saga, but he is definitely an actor who has evolved enormously and has chosen the roles he plays much better in order to demonstrate his true potential. Don't get me wrong, I was in love with Robert in the beginning because I found him very attractive, but in this role he did such a good job that it made me hate him every time he was on screen. I hated the character a lot and that is a sign of his excellent portrayal of the preacher who prayed in the name of God but shortly after that he committed heinous sins when the church closed its doors.

Sebastian Stan fue genial, también un personaje con doble estándar moral que odié bastante por lo hipócrita que era puesto que hacía cosas inmorales pero cuando lo afectaban a él, de repente quería justicia. Mia Wasikowska a quien sólo había visto en Alicia en el País de las Maravillas también fue una grata sorpresa por su estilo de actuación tan natural que parece que ella realmente es el personaje que interpreta. El resto del reparto con actores y actrices como Harry Melling, Riley Keough, Haley Bennet, Drew Starkey, Eliza Scanlen, Jason Clarke y por supuesto el propio escritor de la historia Donald Ray Pollock también hacen un trabajo genial.

Sebastian Stan was great, also a character with double moral standards that I hated a lot because of how hypocritical he was since he did immoral things but when they affected him, he suddenly wanted justice. Mia Wasikowska who I had only seen in Alice in Wonderland was also a pleasant surprise because her acting style was so natural to her that it seems like she really is the character she plays. The rest of the cast with actors and actresses such as Harry Melling, Riley Keough, Haley Bennet, Drew Starkey, Eliza Scanlen, Jason Clarke and of course the story's very own writer Donald Ray Pollock also do a great job .

Aunque mi favorito fue por mucho Bill Skarsgård. Su actuación es más complicada de describir porque es tan buena que tienes que verla para entender. La desesperación, frustración y dolor por el luto se ve tan crudamente real que es quien verdaderamente te engancha a la historia de la película. No hay mucho más que decir. Bill es excepcional.

Although my favorite by far was Bill Skarsgård. His performance is harder to describe because it's so good you have to see it to understand. The desperation, frustration and pain of mourning seem so starkly real that he is the one who truly hooks you into the story of the film. Not much more to say. Bill is exceptional.

La ausencia de Dios, si es que en algún momento existió. Por supuesto que en una sociedad donde apenas acaba de terminar una guerra la moral es algo bastante difuso, tanto que algunos intentan enmascarar los actos más horribles detrás de una religión así como otros que perdieron toda fe en lo que sea que los rodee viven sin ningún límite cometiendo también actos horrendos.

Creo que la historia baraja la idea de lo que es moralmente correcto y lo que no, así como hasta qué punto una doctrina o creencia puede influenciar el comportamiento de una persona o incluso de las masas. No conforme con eso plantea los dilemas morales a través de eventos traumáticos de los que ninguno de los personajes se salva. Todos ellos sufren con creces así como todos tomas decisiones distintas, correctas o no.

The absence of God, if he ever existed. Of course, in a society where a war has just ended, morality is something quite diffuse, so much so that some try to mask the most horrible acts behind a religion just as others who have lost all faith in whatever surrounds them live without any limit also committing horrendous acts.

I think history shuffles the idea of what is morally right and what is not, as well as the extent to which a doctrine or belief can influence the behavior of a person or even the masses. Not satisfied with that, it raises moral dilemmas through traumatic events from which none of the characters are saved. All of them suffer greatly as well as all of them make different decisions, correct or not.

¿Hasta qué punto un trauma modifica la personalidad? ¿Hasta dónde puede llegar el daño? Y sobretodo... ¿Se puede sobrevivir a eso? Por supuesto depende de cada persona y cómo asume lo ocurrido. Lo que sí es seguro es la influencia clara que esas situaciones tendrán en la vida de alguien.

La historia es casi totalmente desesperanzadora y tétrica que toca temas bastante fuertes así como controversiales que coloca en tela de juicio hasta donde es capaz de llegar la maldad humana. Por supuesto la trama llega a ser un tanto bizarra en ciertos puntos sin embargo no queda nada mal, por el contrario la hace más entretenida de ver.

To what extent does trauma modify personality? How far can the damage go? And above all... Can you survive that? Of course it depends on each person and how they accept what happened. What is certain is the clear influence that these situations will have on someone's life.

The story is almost completely hopeless and gloomy, touching on quite strong and controversial themes that call into question the extent to which human evil is capable of reaching. Of course the plot becomes a bit bizarre at certain points, however it is not bad at all, quite the opposite it makes it more entertaining to watch.

Pienso que el director Antonio Campos hizo un buen trabajo en la adaptación de la novela de Donald Ray Pollock puesto que se demuestra de forma clara el mensaje que para mí no es otro que la perversidad humana la cual supera todo aquel demonio o diablo que las religiones o distintas mitologías imaginan. Además probablemente sea por este mal inherente a nuestra naturaleza que Dios no esté en ninguna parte.

I think that the director Antonio Campos did a good job in adapting the novel by Donald Ray Pollock since the message is clearly demonstrated that for me it is none other than human perversity which overcomes all that demon or devil that religions or different mythologies imagine. Furthermore, it is probably because of this inherent evil in our nature that God is nowhere.

Si el suspenso psicológico y el drama te gustan pues esta película es una muy buena opción para ver por lo entretenida que es así como por el mensaje reflexivo que deja al final.

If you like psychological suspense and drama, this film is a very good option to watch because of how entertaining it is as well as the reflective message it leaves at the end.

Yo me di cuanta que Pattinson es buen actor cuando vi Batman, puede parecer que no por el tipo de película pero creeme que si te das cuenta, que lo de él no siempre tiene que ser Crepúsculo. Igual que con Tom Holland, al verlo de Spiderman tambiém hay como cierto prejuicio por el tipo de película pero sabes donde te das realmente cuenta lo top que es? en The Crowded Room, una serie de Apple algo reciente. Si no la has visto te la recomiendo mucho para que reafirmes lo buen actor que es él.

No te hable de película porque no la he visto jaja solo que me llamó la atención tu posición con respecto a estos actores.

¡Totalmente de acuerdo! De hecho este fue el primer proyecto de ambos que ví dónde no interpretaban los papeles por los que son conocidos y fue cuando pude darme cuenta de lo buenos que son, en especial Pattinson.

The Batman salió después y allí me terminé de enamorar de ese hombre jajajaja. No he visto The Crowded Room pero la tendré en cuenta, he visto pocos proyectos de Tom.

Puedes ver la peli luego, vale mucho la pena.

Amigaaa, tengo un crush casi que con medio cast. Obvio quiero.

Pensaba lo mismo de Robert, pero en Batman me gustó mucho. Me recomendaron una peli suya que hace de capitán de un barco o algo así. Que fue una de las primeras buenas películas que hizo luego de crepúsculo. Si consigo el nombre te lo dejo por ahí

Su interpretación de Batman es genial totalmente. Si consigues el nombre de esa otra peli me lo dejas saber, aunque creo que puede ser The Lighthouse la cual aún no veo pero me parece que la premisa era algo así.

No recordaba que había visto esta película hasta empezar a leer tu reseña y realmente me encantó, es una película muy seria que toca unos puntos de la vida misma de una forma muy interesante.

Es una historia bastante lúgubre pero ciertamente toca temas que realmente sí pueden ocurrir, más comúnmente de lo que se puede pensar.
