Today I joined the group of fans who have seen Kenneth Branagh's film, Death on the Nile.

Many years ago I read several Agatha Christie novels, including Death on the Nile, and I am very pleased with what I saw.

I will offer you my appreciation below.

Hace muchos años leí varias novelas de Agatha Christie, entre ellas, Muerte en el Nilo, y estoy muy satisfecha de lo que visto.

What is the movie about? / ¿De qué trata la película?

Very simple. There will be a murder and several possible perpetrators. Hercule Poirot the character created by Agatha Christie will have to use all his cunning to find out who the murderer is. Normally, the place where the murder occurs will be a space that will give us a finite number of murderers.

Muy sencillo. Habrá un asesinato y varios posibles autores del mismo. Hércules Poirot el personaje creado por Agatha Christie tendrá que utilizar toda su astucia para descubrir quién es el asesino. Normalmente, el lugar donde ocurre el asesinato será un espacio que nos dará un número finito de asesinos.

Death on the Nile is the adaptation of Agatha Christie's novel of the same name. Detective Hercule Poirot is on vacation in Egypt, and on board a cruise ship the murder of Linnet occurs. Everyone present, in one way or another, has some relation to her so everyone will be a suspect.

Since the action takes place on a steamship, where no one can leave or enter, the guests who have every reason to have committed the murder will be reviewed by the brilliant mind of Poirot to find the culprit.

En Muerte en el Nilo es una adaptación de la novela de Agatha Christie, del mismo nombre. El detective Hércules Poirot se encuentra de vacaciones en Egipto, y a bordo de un crucero ocurre el asesinato de Linnet. Todos los presentes, de una manera u otra, tienen alguna relación con ella por lo que todos serán sospechosos.

Dado que la acción ocurre en un barco de vapor, donde nadie puede salir ni entrar, los invitados que tienen sobradas razones para haber cometido el asesinato serán revisados por la mente brillante de Poirot hasta dar con el culpable.

Cinema and Literature / Cine y Literatura

On many occasions we criticize movies because they do not live up to the novels from which they arise.

In this case it is not so. I think that one of the achievements of the film is the great adaptation of the novel.

To read Agatha Christie's wonderful novels is to enter a world of mystery and suspense. It is to unravel through the descriptions the psychology of the characters and discover, almost always at the end, who the murderer is.

En muchas ocasiones criticamos las películas pues éstas no están a la altura de las novelas de donde surgen.

En este caso no es así. Pienso que uno de los logros de la película es la regia adaptación que hace de la novela.

Leer las maravillosas novelas de Agatha Christie introducirse en un mundo de misterio y suspenso. Es ir deshilvanando a través de las descripciones la psicología de los personajes y descubrir, casi siempre, al final quién es el asesino.

Hercule Poirot is detailed and leaves us the elements that will lead him to his final conclusion.

In the cinematographic case, I think Kenneth Branagh has done it very well because without saying, saying, the characters have the opportunity to introduce themselves (so to speak) and to indicate their motivations to kill Linnet.

There is a magnificent use of shots, music and scenery to create the atmosphere of suspense and police investigation that often envelops us. In addition, the characters acquire believable faces to develop the visual story.

Hércules Poirot es detallista y nos va dejando los elementos que lo llevarán a su conclusión final.

En el caso cinematográfico, pienso que Kenneth Branagh lo ha hecho muy bien ya que sin decir, diciendo, los personajes tienen la oportunidad de irse presentando (por decirlo de alguna manera) y de ir indicando sus motivaciones para matar a Linnet.

Existe un magnífico aprovechamiento de los planos, la música y de la escenografía para crear el ambiente de suspenso e investigación policial que en muchas ocasiones nos envuelve. Además, los personajes adquieren rostros creíbles para desarrollar la historia visual.

Actors / Actores

Something I like in this film are the actors and the different schools they come from. Let's look at some examples.

Gal Gadot (Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle) is an Israeli actress best known for her roles in Wonder Woman and Fast and Furious. This time she brings the title character to life in a convincing performance.

Armand Hammer (Simon Doyle) is an American actor who was a standout in the film The Social Network. Although his artistic career has been a roller coaster in this film he plays his role very well.

Algo que me gusta en este filme son los actores y las distintas escuelas de donde provienen. Veamos algunos ejemplos.

Gal Gadot (Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle) es una actriz israelí mejor conocida en sus roles de Mujer Maravilla y Rápido y Furioso. En esta ocasión da vida al personaje principal de una manera convincente.

Armand Hammer (Simon Doyle) es un actor estadounidense que destacó en la película La red social. Aunque su carrera artística ha sido una montaña rusa en esta película hace muy bien su rol.

Annette Bening (Euphemia) is an American actress who started in the performing arts of theater. She has won two Golden Globe Awards and a Bafta. Euphemia is one of the main suspects in this drama due to the fact that she finds Linnet's necklace and is a woman who is resentful, which is a good motive to kill.

Ali Fazal (Andrew Katchadourian) is a Bollywood actor in India. Although he is not well known in the West or in European cinema, he is a young man who has studied acting and is making his way in the acting world. I have a feeling that in a short time his name will be in better films.

Letitia Wright (Rosalie Otterbourne) is a British actress known for her performances in the Marvel movies Avengers Infinity war and Avengers Endgame. Rosalie Otterbourne is a wealthy woman who has recently been investigated by Poirot.

Anyway, the cast was very well chosen and each actor or actress shows off his or her histrionics. They, as I said at the beginning, make themselves believable and their characters come alive in the film.

Annette Bening (Euphemia) es una actriz estadounidense que se inició en las artes escénicas del teatro. Ha sido ganadora de dos premios Globos de Oro y de un Bafta. Euphemia es una de las principales sospechosas, en este drama, debido a que ella encuentra el collar de Linnet y es una mujer que está resentida, lo cual es un buen motivo para matar.

Ali Fazal (Andrew Katchadourian) es un actor de Bollywood en la India. Aunque no es muy conocido en occidente ni en el cine europeo, es un joven que ha estudiado actuación y que se está abriendo camino en el mundo actoral. Presiento que en poco tiempo su nombre estará en mejores filmes.

Letitia Wright (Rosalie Otterbourne) es una actriz británica conocida por sus interpretaciones en las películas de Marvel: Avengers Infinity war y Avengers Endgame. Rosalie Otterbourne es una mujer adinerada que ha sido recientemente investigada por Poirot.

En fin, el reparto fue muy bien escogido y cada actor o actriz hace gala de su histrionismo. Ellos, como dije en el inicio, se hacen creíbles y sus personajes adquieren vida en la película.

Development of the script / Desarrollo del guion

Another aspect that caught my attention was the timing of the plot development. During the first half hour a viewer, who has never read British Agatha Christie, can know what the film is about and the most important characters.

By the time the hour is up, you know each of the characters' motivations for killing Linnet. Then, even knowing or suspecting who the killer might be, director Kenneth Branagh starts a little game that can make the viewer doubt Poirot's discoveries or his own deductions. I find this masterful. The viewer becomes involved in the film and can also make his own guesses.

Then, in the last half hour, the actions may appear more accelerated to further increase the suspense. Finally, Poirot will tell who he is, how he did it, and why he did it.

Otro aspecto que me llamó mucho la atención fueron los tiempos manejados para ir desarrollando la trama. Durante la primera media hora un espectador, que no haya leído jamás a británica Agatha Christie, puede saber de qué se trata la película y los personajes más importantes.

Al llegar a la hora, ya se sabe cada una de las motivaciones que tenían los personajes para liquidar a Linnet. Luego, aun sabiendo o sospechando quién puede ser el asesino, el director Kenneth Branagh empieza un pequeño juego que puede hacer dudar al espectador de los descubrimientos de Poirot o de sus propias deducciones. Esto me parece magistral. El espectador se involucra en la película y también se puede hacer sus propias conjeturas.

Después, en la última media hora, las acciones pueden aparecer más aceleradas para seguir incrementando el suspenso. Finalmente, Poirot dirá quién es, cómo lo hizo, y por qué lo hizo.

Time to Get to Know Hercule Poirot / Tiempo para conocer a Hércules Poirot

Something that I find remarkable, in this film, is the shrewdness of the screenwriter Michael Green to show us Hercule Poirot. This character, the main character in Agatha Christie's novels, has feelings, a past, and ways of reacting to events. Poirot in Death on the Nile is presented to us as complex and nuanced. I get the impression that Branagh intends to continue exploring Agatha Christie to further delve into the peculiarities of Hercule Poirot.

Algo que me parece destacable, en esta película, es la sagacidad del guionista Michael Green para mostrarnos a Hércules Poirot. Este personaje, el principal en las novelas de Agatha Christie, tiene sentimientos, un pasado, y maneras de reaccionar ante los acontecimientos. Poirot en Muerte en el Nilo se nos presenta complejo y con muchos matices. A mí me da la impresión que Branagh pretende seguir explorando a Agatha Christie para seguir ahondando en las peculiaridades de Hércules Poirot.

Set design, photography, makeup, costumes, and music / Escenografía, fotografía, maquillaje, vestuario y música

The film has good cinematography and Haris Zambarloukos makes perfect use of the landscapes to make the setting of the film. The set design is glamorous and is supported by the excellent costumes and makeup. Undoubtedly, everything has coherence and the visual enjoyment, in this sense, is maximum.

I also want to highlight Patrick Doyle's music that aligns very well with the suspenseful climax and development of the film.

La película tiene buena fotografía y Haris Zambarloukos aprovecha perfectamente los paisajes para hacer la ambientación del filme. La escenografía es glamurosa y se apoya en el excelente equipo de vestuario y el maquillaje. Indudablemente, todo tiene coherencia y el disfrute visual, en este sentido, es máximo.

También deseo destacar la música de Patrick Doyle que se alinea muy bien con el clímax de suspenso y desarrollo del filme.

As I mentioned at the beginning, it is a predictable film and even more so for those of us who have read Agatha Christie, but I think the film manages to delve into the life of Hercule Poirot and give us a good moment of cinematic entertainment.

Death on the Nile provides a brief reflection on human emotions and what they are capable of provoking.

Tal como mencioné al principio es una película previsible y aún más para quienes hemos leído a Agatha Christie pero pienso que la película logra ahondar en la vida de Hércules Poirot y en hacernos pasar por un buen momento de entretenimiento cinematográfico.

Muerte en el Nilo propicia, someramente, la reflexión hacia las emociones humanas y lo que ellas son capaces de provocar.
