Last week I shared with you a review of Knives Out, a movie that I simply loved and would undoubtedly watch a bunch more times. As I finished watching this mind-blowingly wonderful movie for me, I noticed that there was a sequel released late last year and titled: Knives Out Back: The Glass Onion Mystery (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery). After the hype generated by the first film, I didn't hesitate for a second to dive into the Glass Onion mystery. However, this film didn't generate the same excitement for me as its predecessor, so in this review I'll tell you why.

¿De qué trata la película?

What is the film about?

In Daggers in the Back: The Mystery of Glass Onion, detective Benoit Blanc (played by Daniel Craig) returns to try to solve a new mysterious case. This time, the story begins when a group of friends, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, contact each other via telephone to try to solve the riddle of a mysterious box that has arrived at each of their doorsteps. Solving the riddle leads to an invitation to get away from confinement and attend a party on a striking and exclusive island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. This invitation comes from the hand of the powerful technological multimillionaire Miles Bron, who decided to summon his closest circle of friends to spend a whole weekend enjoying a mystery adventure that he himself had prepared, but what is this adventure? well, trying to solve who has been responsible for his own fictitious murder.

This select group of friends call themselves "The Perturbators", and they're made up of some pretty peculiar characters: a troubled ex-model named Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson) and her loyal assistant Peg (Jessica Henwick); muscle-bound, bobble-headed influencer Duke Cody (Dave Bautista) and his stunning girlfriend Whiskey (Madelyn Cline); Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr. ) the chief scientist of Miles' company; Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), a somewhat immoral governor; and Andi Brand (Janelle Monáe), Miles' former business partner and one for whom the entire group is somewhat suspicious. However, an eighth person was summoned to the island, and not exactly at Miles' invitation: the famous detective Benoit Blanc. It is here that the questions begin to arise: who invited the detective to the island and why?

Before the game planned by Miles can unfold, a few surprises arise and many truths begin to come to light to clarify the true picture surrounding the whole thing. As the film progresses we realize that each of this group of friends keeps certain secrets that serve as real motives to kill the billionaire. And so it is that we will be involved in one twist after another in this glass onion that will reveal that the eccentricities of each of the characters arise from the moral cracks caused by their devotion to money, fame and recognition.

Detective Blanc quickly discovers that there is a cat in the bag in that planned weekend meeting between friends, so it will be in his hands to go deciphering layer after layer, like an onion, all that mystery to find the suspect.

To be honest, I came with very high expectations after seeing Knives Out, so I was expecting its successor film to surpass or at least match those expectations... but that didn't happen. Unlike its predecessor, Glass Onion begins without such a solid structure and drops each character on you practically out of nowhere, without establishing a connection between them and leaving you wondering for a long time who everyone is. In the first film the construction of each character was very well worked and what I liked the most is that none of them was relegated. However, in Glass Onion that does happen because in the first instance it is Kate Hudson with her character of Birdie Jay who starts stealing the show and standing out among all the others, but there is a second character who undoubtedly manages to overcome her, and basically ends up playing a similar role to Marta Cabrera in the first film.

There is no shortage of plot twists in this film, but the truth is that some of them become somewhat unnecessary making the film a tedious back and forth until we really get to the heart of the matter, to the center of the onion as Blanc would say. In Knives Out the interest remained latent throughout the film, unlike Glass Onion where the first half of the film may bore more than one and transmit that feeling of wanting to stop watching the film. In my opinion, it is right in the middle of the story where the interesting and unexpected twist really happens and the whole picture changes drastically. I'm not going to lie to you, I liked that change of events to another direction that I definitely didn't see coming, but what I didn't like was that the whole first part of the movie went so slowly. At some point one comes to question the fact that if there isn't a real murder, then what is the detective doing there, what is he supposed to be investigating? But wait calmly, it is right in the middle of the film where we will get the answer to these questions.

Something that continues to be maintained in this sequel is that of exposing the darkest parts of the characters and how far people are capable of going thanks to that negative part hidden in their personality. In Knives Out the story revolved around greed, but this time it revolves around the need for approval and the need for fame and recognition at any cost. From a humorous point of view, this story leads us to analyze the actions of people and how loyalty and sincerity become fragile points when there are great economic interests involved. It is the very complexities of each character, as well as their shortcomings and interests, that end up adding value to the final mystery.

As for the film's script, it was perhaps designed to function as a kind of mockery and exposure of people with lots and lots and lots of money. Letting us see that there are cases in which you are not necessarily too smart for having a lot of zeros in your bank account. The script also makes us navigate through the extravagance of the upper classes, without leaving aside the corruption of values and the lack of principles by those people who go out of their way for money, acceptance and public recognition. In this sense, I liked the reflection left by the film, because despite being a humorous film specially designed for entertainment, the point it touches is not too far from the reality we live in.

🎬 🎬 6/10🎬 🎬

As I was saying, I didn't particularly like this movie as much as its predecessor. I feel it lacked a little more intrigue and suspense without giving so many twists and turns to have to explain a little bit about each character. However, the way they played with the viewer's mind to reveal the mystery was interesting. Something that Knives Out does not lose, without a doubt, is the beauty of each of its scenarios. Perhaps this gives an additional plus to the whole plot, however, I would give this sequel a:

🎬 🎬 6/10🎬 🎬

Hola, @ylsecardamonet 💜✨

Gracias.

Saludos.

I found the movie entertaining, I liked the cast and the way flashbacks are inserted and the mystery is solved, but I still like the first movie better. This one is bigger, it wants to make more of an impact visually, but the first one is better.

Without a doubt, the scenery in this film is breathtaking. Although there is no denying that the Thrombey family mansion also had its charm. In this sequel I didn't like some of the characters as much as in the previous movie where I can tell you that I connected with all of them.

Thanks for leaving your comment 💜✨
