[ESP] | [ENG] — Un crimen se hace viral: "Clickbait" (reseña sin spoilers).

Me gustan mucho aquellas películas o series que logran trasmitirte un mensaje importante y que gracias a su trama terminas viendo las cosas desde otro punto de vista o incluso reflexionando a fondo sobre cosas que antes solías tomarte un poco, digamos que, a la ligera. A veces no sólo se trata de lo entretenida e interesante que pueda resultar la historia, sin duda esos son componentes esenciales cuando elegimos una película o serie para disfrutar, pero también el aprendizaje o enseñanza que nos pueda transmitir toda la historia es un factor que puede marcar la diferencia…aunque a veces como espectadores no hagamos mucho caso de esto último.

La reseña que les comparto el día de hoy es sobre una miniserie de Netflix (sí, sí…aquí voy de nuevo con esta plataforma de streaming …¡lo siento!) que nos lleva a reflexionar sobre el gran impacto que tiene el mundo cibernético, específicamente las redes sociales, sobre nuestra vida, sobre nuestra identidad. Si bien las redes sociales son, actualmente, el medio más importante para mantenernos informados y por donde compartimos nuestra opinión sobre temas que a veces ni siquiera conocemos por completo, te has preguntado acaso: ¿cuál podría llegar a ser la repercusión que tendría el comentario u opinión de cualquier usuario sobre la vida de la persona que se encuentra al otro lado de la pantalla? Pues bueno, creo que esta miniserie te hará reflexionar mucho entorno a esto.

I really like those movies or series that manage to convey an important message and that thanks to its plot you end up seeing things from another point of view or even reflecting deeply on things that before you used to take a little, let's say, lightly. Sometimes it's not only about how entertaining and interesting the story may be, those are certainly essential components when we choose a movie or series to enjoy, but also the learning or teaching that the whole story can transmit us is a factor that can make a difference...although sometimes as viewers we don't pay much attention to the latter.

The review I share with you today is about a Netflix miniseries (yes, yes...here I go again with this streaming platform...sorry!) that leads us to reflect on the great impact that the cyber world, specifically social networks, has on our lives, on our identity. While social networks are currently the most important means to keep us informed and through which we share our opinion on topics that sometimes we do not even know completely, have you ever wondered: what could be the repercussion that the comment or opinion of any user would have on the life of the person on the other side of the screen? Well, I think this miniseries will make you think a lot about this.

Clickbait es una miniserie Australiana-Estadounidense de suspenso, crimen y drama familiar, estrenada en Agosto del año pasado y que, tal como les expuse en la introducción de esta publicación, plantea los riesgos a los que nos vemos expuestos al momento en que usamos aplicaciones digitales o cuando decidimos crearnos un perfil en las famosas redes sociales, así como también explora en cómo la desinformación y el hecho de no saber diferenciar entre la vida real y virtual puede llegar a desencadenar grandes problemas.

La historia se centra en la figura de Nick Brewer (Adrian Grenier) y su núcleo familiar. Este hombre, aparentemente, es una persona que lleva una vida normal: es el esposo y padre ideal, buen hijo y hermano; posee un buen empleo, sus amigos y compañeros de trabajo sentían gran respeto, admiración y cariño hacia él. Al parecer Nick era el hombre perfecto y nada extraño ocurría con él, hasta que un día sale a relucir un vídeo en Internet donde se veía a Nick bastante golpeado y sosteniendo un letrero en el cual podía leerse claramente la frase: “Abusé de una mujer”. Su hermana Pía (Zoe Kazan) fue la primera persona cercana a Nick en ver este vídeo y es ahí donde se alarma. Pía y la esposa de Nick, Sophie, dan inicio a la búsqueda, acuden a la policía y es declarado oficialmente desaparecido. Lo cierto es que la búsqueda de Nick se convierte en una mucho más urgente cuando es publicado un segundo vídeo de él sosteniendo un nuevo cartel con una frase aún más alarmante: “A las 5 millones de visualizaciones, moriré”.

Clickbait is an Australian-American suspense, crime and family drama series, released in August last year and that, as I explained in the introduction of this publication, splains the risks to which we are exposed when we use digital applications or when we decide to create a profile on the famous social networks, as well as explores how misinformation and the fact of not knowing how to differentiate between real and virtual life can trigger big problems.

The story centers on Nick Brewer (Adrian Grenier) and his nuclear family. This man, apparently, is a person who leads a normal life: he is the ideal husband and father, good son and brother; he has a good job, his friends and co-workers felt great respect, admiration and affection towards him. It seemed that Nick was the perfect man and nothing strange was happening with him, until one day a video surfaced on the Internet where Nick was seen badly beaten and holding a sign on which you could clearly read the phrase: "I abuse a women". His sister Pia (Zoe Kazan) was the first person close to Nick to see this video and that's when he became alarmed. Pia and Nick's wife, Sophie, start the search, go to the police and he is officially declared missing. The truth is that the search for Nick becomes much more urgent when a second video is posted of him holding a new sign with an even more alarming phrase: "At 5 million views, I will die".

El número de visualizaciones comienza a aumentar y es ahí donde Pía, Sophie y un policía muy dedicado a su labor emprenden una carrera contrarreloj para dar con el paradero de Nick antes de que sea demasiado tarde. A medida de que el vídeo se vuelve más y más viral, todas las personas cercanas a Nick comienzan a preguntarse quién realmente es él y si lo que está escrito en esos carteles es realmente una confesión o una terrible confusión. A medida de que la investigación policial avanza y de que Pía y Sophie intenta también dilucidar el asunto por su propia cuenta, los secretos de la familia Brewer comienzan a salir a la luz quedando entonces expuestos e indefensos ante el acoso de los medios de comunicación y el escrutinio público.

La serie consta de ocho episodios en total en el cual cada uno se centra en un personaje en particular y, esto me pareció bastante interesante, pues cada capítulo al enfocarse en un personaje crea una subtrama pero que se enfoca hacia la relación que dicho personaje tiene con Nick y explicando cómo es que ese personaje en particular tiene una importancia vital para todo el problema que está ocurriendo, bien sea porque oculta algo o porque será la pieza clave para descubrir una información importante. Es así como comenzamos con la hermana, seguida de la esposa, pasando por el periodista, hasta finalmente llegar a la verdad.

The number of views starts to increase and that's when Pia, Sophie and a very dedicated police officer start a race against time to find Nick's whereabouts before it's too late. As the video goes more and more viral, everyone close to Nick begins to wonder who he really is and if what is written on those posters is really a confession or a terrible confusion. As the police investigation progresses and as Pia and Sophie also try to elucidate the matter on their own, the secrets of the Brewer family begin to come to light and they are then exposed and defenseless in the face of media harassment and public scrutiny.

The series consists of eight episodes in total in which each one focuses on a particular character and, this I found quite interesting, because each chapter by focusing on a character creates a subplot but that focuses on the relationship that character has with Nick and explaining how that particular character has a vital importance to the whole problem that is happening, either because he hides something or because it will be the key piece to discover important information. This is how we start with the sister, followed by the wife, passing through the journalist, until finally arriving at the truth.

¿Nick de verdad es culpable o inocente?, ¿los letreros dicen la verdad o alguien más lo está inculpando?, ¿su esposa tuvo algo que ver con todo esto? Tras cada episodio quedaban miles de preguntas rondando en mi mente y cuando comenzaba a armar el rompecabezas y tratar de descubrir todo el misterio, llegaba el siguiente capítulo a desarmar las piezas de todo lo que yo había intentado armar con las pistas que iba arrojando la historia. Y así va transcurriendo la serie…en un capítulo piensas que Nick es inocente y ya en el siguiente capítulo lo detestas porque hay algo que te hace creer que es completamente culpable.

Hasta que llegas al final.

En el último capítulo es donde ocurre LA GRAN revelación y simplemente no puedes creer cómo es que un malentendido, una equivocación de una persona que en principio no tenía tan malas intenciones, terminó creando un sinfín de problemas que logró hundir no sólo la vida de una persona, sino de una familia entera. La verdad de toda la historia que se nos expone en el último capítulo es lo que también nos lleva a la reflexión: las ventajas y desventajas que las redes sociales pueden tener en nuestra vida.

Algo bastante llamativo es que la serie se aleja mucho del significado real de su nombre, que en español se traduciría algo así como ”ciberanzuelo”. El término clickbait se refiere a aquellos contenidos que tienen por objetivo captar nuestra atención para que terminemos dando “clic” y entrando entonces a un enlace que, al final de cuentas, no era tan interesante como parecía ser. Entonces, a diferencia de los ciberanzuelos o clickbaits de la Internet, al entrar a la serie pasa todo lo contrario: terminas maratoneándola.

Is Nick really guilty or innocent, are the signs telling the truth or is someone else framing him, did his wife have something to do with all this? After each episode there were thousands of questions hanging around in my mind and when I started to put the puzzle together and try to figure out the whole mystery, the next chapter came to disassemble the pieces of everything I had tried to put together with the clues that the story was throwing. And that's how the series goes...in one chapter you think Nick is innocent and in the next chapter you hate him because there's something that makes you believe he's completely guilty.

Until you get to the end.

In the last chapter is where THE BIG revelation happens and you simply can't believe how a misunderstanding, a mistake by a person who in the beginning had no such bad intentions, ended up creating endless problems that managed to sink not only the life of one person, but of an entire family. The truth of the whole story that is exposed to us in the last chapter is what also leads us to reflection: the advantages and disadvantages that social networks can have in our lives.

Something quite striking is that the series is far removed from the real meaning of its name. The term clickbait refers to those contents that aim to capture our attention so that we end up giving "click" and then entering a link that, at the end of the day, was not as interesting as it seemed to be. So, unlike the ciberanzuelos or clickbaits of the Internet, when you enter the series, the opposite happens: you end up marathoning it.

Pero bien, como les decía, la serie te lleva a comprender que realmente ni la tecnología ni las redes sociales son el problema, sino más bien el problema se encuentra en cómo los usuarios hacen uso de ellas. No somos jueces, pero al parecer en las redes sociales nos comportamos como tal. Creemos que tenemos el derecho de criticar a otros con el solo hecho de ver su fotografía o sus vídeos pero no nos tomamos el tiempo para pensar en que del otro lado de la pantalla hay personas reales, de carne y hueso como nosotros mismos, que tienen sentimientos y que pueden verse afectadas por cualquier tipo de comentario, sobre todo por aquellos comentarios negativos. No nos detenemos a pensar en que podemos estar dañando a una persona que, quizás, ya tenga suficientes problemas con los que lidiar y que con el simple hecho de dar un clic, podemos estar condenando a esa persona para el resto de su vida.

Al ingresar a Internet debemos de tener muy en claro que las identidades pueden ser fácilmente manipuladas en el mundo virtual, transformándose a la conveniencia de cualquier usuario y haciéndonos creer algo que en realidad no es verdad y es aquí donde podemos terminar convirtiéndonos en una presa fácil de aquellas personas que hacen un incorrecto uso de las redes sociales. Quizás te estés preguntado cómo rayos es que alguien podría caer en manos de un usuario con un perfil falso…pero hey, sí, esto no sólo ocurre en la ficción, sino también en la vida real y hay muchos casos famosos en donde personas inocentes (más que todo niños y adolescentes) han sido engañadas a través de la Internet. Por eso es que Clickbait me ha parecido tan interesante ya que plantea una problemática real y, de cierta manera, hace un llamado de atención para que seamos conscientes y responsables sobre el uso que le estamos dando a la tecnología y que ese poder que nos otorgan las redes sociales, lo sepamos emplear de manera inteligente.

But, as I was saying, the series leads you to understand that neither technology nor social networks are the problem, but rather the problem lies in how users make use of them. We are not judges, but apparently in social networks we behave as such. We believe we have the right to criticize others just by looking at their picture or videos but we don't take the time to think that on the other side of the screen there are real people, flesh and blood like ourselves, who have feelings and can be affected by any kind of comment, especially by those negative comments. We do not stop to think that we may be hurting a person who, perhaps, already has enough problems to deal with and that with the simple fact of giving a click, we may be condemning that person for the rest of his life.

When entering the Internet we must be very clear that identities can be easily manipulated in the virtual world, transforming to the convenience of any user and making us believe something that in reality is not true and it is here where we can end up becoming an easy prey of those people who make an incorrect use of social networks. You might be wondering how on earth someone could fall into the hands of a user with a fake profile...but hey, yes, this not only happens in fiction, but also in real life and there are many famous cases where innocent people (mostly children and teenagers) have been tricked through the Internet. That's why I found Clickbait so interesting because it raises a real problem and, in a way, makes a call for attention so that we are aware and responsible about the use we are giving to technology and that the power that social networks give us, we know how to use it wisely.

Quizás esta no sea la primera serie que trata de mostrar que existen personas que hacen mal uso de la tecnología, probablemente hay series mejores, pero les aseguro que la esta serie termina resultando bastante entretenida y ese plot twist al final...¡tremendo! sí que vale la pena, simplemente te llevarás una gran sorpresa.

Maybe this is not the first series that tries to show that there are people who misuse technology, there are probably better series, but I assure you that this series ends up being quite entertaining and that plot twist at the end...great! it is worth it, you will simply get a big surprise.
