Turning Red: Más que un panda rojo🌈 [Esp/Eng]

Espero estén súper súper bien y hayan tenido una bonita semana. Esta vez les traigo una reseña de una película, y si han leído mis recomendaciones o reseñas antes, sabrán que no he comentado mucho sobre películas, pero realmente no veo tantas películas, y aunque estas son bastante prácticas por su formato corto, a mí me encanta ver historias largas, por algo veo tanto k-drama. La mayoría de películas las vi hace bastante tiempo, pero aun así tengo algunas que me llaman la atención y las veo; sobre todo me gusta verlas acompañada, así puedo comentar al momento.

La peli de la que les hablaré es “Turning Red”, que tiene algún tiempo que se estrenó. Nos cuenta la historia de Mei Lee, una adolescente que vive cumpliendo expectativas familiares impuestas sobre todo por su mamá, súper estricta y protectora. Su madre Ming espera que sea la hija ideal: aplicada, educada y siempre obediente.

This time I bring you a movie review, and if you have read my recommendations or reviews before, you will know that I haven't commented much on movies, but I don't really watch that many movies, and although they are quite practical because of their short format, I love watching long stories, which is why I watch so much K-drama. I saw most of these movies quite a while ago, but I still have some that catch my attention and I watch them; I especially like to watch them with someone else so I can comment on them as I go.

The movie I'm going to talk about is Turning Red, which was released some time ago. It tells the story of Mei Lee, a teenager who lives up to the expectations imposed on her by her family, especially her super strict and protective mother. Her mother Ming expects her to be the ideal daughter: studious, polite, and always obedient.

Su familia maneja un templo para rendir tributo a sus antepasados, pues Mei tiene ascendencia china. Sun Yee, quien es su ancestro, protegía a su comunidad con el poder del panda rojo. Ese poder se transmitió a sus descendientes mujeres y aquí es donde va tomando sentido el título de la película, pues una tradición familiar oculta para Mei ligada al poder de su ancestral Sun Yee, que se activa cada vez que experimenta emociones intensas, la transforma en un panda gigante rojo.

Ahora Mei intentará mantener este secreto oculto hasta que un ritual para sellar al panda se lleve a cabo, pero es muy difícil para ella mantener sus emociones calmadas porque tiene una “vida secreta” llena de entusiasmo adolescente. Junto a sus mejores amigas (Miriam, Priya y Abby) es fanática de 4*Town, una banda pop que le provoca emociones que no siempre puede controlar.

Her family runs a temple to pay tribute to their ancestors, as Mei is of Chinese descent. Sun Yee, her ancestor, protected her community with the power of the red panda. That power was passed down to her female descendants, and this is where the film's title makes sense, as a family tradition hidden from Mei, linked to the power of her ancestor Sun Yee, which is activated whenever she experiences intense emotions, transforms her into a giant red panda.

Now Mei will try to keep this secret hidden until a ritual to seal the panda is performed, but it is very difficult for her to keep her emotions calm because she has a “secret life” full of teenage enthusiasm. Together with her best friends (Miriam, Priya, and Abby), she is a fan of 4*Town, a pop band that provokes emotions she cannot always control.

Aunque esta animación está dirigida a niños más que todo, trata temas con los que aunque hayas pasado por la adolescencia hace mucho, te puedes identificar: la exigencia por cumplir expectativas familiares frente al deseo de vivir tus propias experiencias, explorar y expresar tu personalidad que se encuentra en esta etapa de construcción, y que en lo personal creo que muchos adultos de hoy en día no vivieron por este mismo patrón de cumplir con un estándar familiar. Creo que es un común denominador en una gran mayoría de personas.

También, por otro lado, está la mamá de Mei que quiere lo mejor para su hija, pero no nota el daño que le causa; al mismo tiempo forma parte de este patrón generacional que se repite y se repite, y es muy complicado salir de él. En toda la película vemos este viaje de autodescubrimiento, identidad, amor propio y una curita para el alma cuando muestran esa evolución entre Mei y su mamá.

Although this animation is aimed primarily at children, it deals with issues that you can identify with even if you went through adolescence a long time ago: the pressure to meet family expectations versus the desire to live your own experiences, explore and express your personality, which is still developing at this stage. Personally, I believe that many adults today did not experience this same pattern of having to meet family standards. I think it's a common denominator for the vast majority of people.

On the other hand, there is Mei's mother, who wants the best for her daughter but does not realize the damage she is causing her. At the same time, she is part of this generational pattern that repeats itself over and over again, and it is very difficult to break out of it. Throughout the film, we see this journey of self-discovery, identity, self-love, and healing for the soul as they show the evolution between Mei and her mother.

Creo que vale la pena verla, independientemente de la edad que tengas. Es una propuesta animada diferente pero necesaria, que toca estos temas y nos muestra personajes más diversos.

I think it's worth watching, regardless of your age. It's a different but necessary animated film that tackles these issues and shows us more diverse characters.
