Dutch rom-coms are the sort of films I usually put on when I want to watch something without too many expectations – just a film to sit back and enjoy.

And Happy Single is exactly that sort of film: just the right amount of romance and a touch of comedy.

The story, of course, revolves around love, dating, relationships and the question of whether you actually need someone to be happy.

It’s a subject that lends itself to plenty of relatable and, above all, funny situations.

What I particularly liked was that there were regular moments where I thought: ‘Oh yes, I can relate to that!’
Or: ‘Been there, done that.’

The main character, Mollie, in particular – who overthinks relationships and what she’s actually supposed to want – is very relatable.

Whilst it’s long been clear to the viewer that Mollie and Otis (her co-star) belong together and are the perfect match, she continues to resist her feelings.

That’s what makes the story, for me, just that little bit more than just a standard romantic film – precisely because it’s so relatable.

The film is full of humour, awkward dates, misunderstandings and those all-too-familiar situations. 😂

You might see some of the events coming a bit, but I didn’t find that at all off-putting.

Besides, the film would have ended far too quickly without a bit of drama and chaos.

With a Dutch feel-good film, you naturally know roughly what to expect, and that’s precisely what makes it so relaxing to watch.

The combination of humour and romance works well.

Fortunately, it doesn’t get overly saccharine, and there are plenty of moments that had me laughing out loud.

Especially the scene in the woods where Molly steps into a trap and is flung into the air.

Naturally, Otis has to come to her rescue.

The characters are relatable and go through enough to keep you engaged.

It’s not the sort of film that leaves you pondering the meaning of life for hours afterwards, but that’s not necessary at all.

Sometimes you just want a cosy film for an evening on the sofa, without a complicated plot and with plenty of humour, puns, romance and relatable situations.

So, if you’re looking for a light-hearted film for a relaxing evening, Happy Single is an excellent choice.

Entertaining, relatable and, as we say in Dutch, ‘gezellig’.

It’s exactly the sort of film where you can kick back, grab a bowl of popcorn or something else tasty, wrap yourself in a warm blanket and just switch off for a while. 🍿❤️

Nederlandse Rom-Com films zijn films die ik meestal opzet als ik een film wil kijken zonder al te hoge verwachtingen, gewoon een film om lekker naar te kijken.

En Happy Single is precies zo’n film, net genoeg romantiek en een vleugje comedy.

Het verhaal draait natuurlijk om liefde, daten, relaties en de vraag of je eigenlijk wel iemand nodig hebt om gelukkig te zijn.

Een onderwerp waar genoeg herkenbare en vooral grappige situaties uit voort kunnen komen.

Wat ik vooral fijn vond, is dat er regelmatig van die momenten voorbij kwamen waarvan ik dacht: oh ja, herkenbaar!

Of: Been there, done that.

Vooral de hoofdpersonage Mollie, die te veel nadenkt over relaties en over wat ze eigenlijk zou moeten willen, is heel herkenbaar.

Terwijl het voor de kijker al lang duidelijk is dat Mollie en Otis (haar tegenspeler) bij elkaar horen en de perfecte match zijn, blijft zij zich afzetten tegen haar gevoelens.

Dat maakt het verhaal voor mij net wat meer dan alleen een standaard romantische film, juist omdat het een zo herkenbaar is.

De film zit vol humor, ongemakkelijke dates, misverstanden en de herkenbare situaties. 😂

Sommige gebeurtenissen zie je misschien al een beetje aankomen, maar dat vond ik eigenlijk helemaal niet storend.

En anders zou de film wel heel snel afgelopen zijn zonder een beetje drama en hectiek.

Bij een Nederlandse feelgoodfilm weet je natuurlijk ongeveer wat je kunt verwachten en juist dat maakt hem zo ontspannen om naar te kijken.

De combinatie van humor en romantiek werkt goed. Het wordt gelukkig niet overdreven zoetsappig en er zitten genoeg momenten in waarop ik hardop moest lachen.

Vooral het moment in het bos waar Molly in een val loopt en de lucht in schiet.

Natuurlijk moet Otis haar komen redden.

De personages zijn herkenbaar en maken genoeg mee om je aandacht erbij te houden.

Het is geen film waarbij je na afloop nog uren diep gaat nadenken over de betekenis van het leven, maar dat hoeft ook helemaal niet.

Soms wil je gewoon een gezellige film voor een avondje op de bank, zonder ingewikkeld verhaal en met genoeg humor, woordgrapjes, romantiek en herkenbare situaties.

Dus op zoek naar een luchtige film voor een ontspannen avond dan is Happy Single een prima keus.

Vermakelijk, herkenbaar en zoals we in het Nederlands zeggen “gezellig”.

Precies zo’n film waarbij je lekker onderuit kunt zakken, bak popcorn of iets anders lekkers erbij, warm dekentje en gewoon even nergens anders aan denken. 🍿❤️
