What I Learned From Watching the Movie Overcomer

I was on a YouTube page some days ago, I came across a comment that said "I fell in love with this song because of the movie "Overcomer". The "Who You Say I Am) is one of my most played song in one season of my life so I got curious to know why the movie made someone love a song I've always loved and played a lot since I listened.

Another reason I decided to go for the movie without much thought was, it was a good break from all the long series taking my time. But what I saw and learnt in the movie was way more than I expected, I actually felt something in me as I watched the story especially at the intermission of the story where it got tensed and emotional.

"Overcomer" is a 2019 movie, quite old but packed with lessons that we still need in our world today. The storyline is about a coach whose team fell apart and he was assigned to train a girl in running. It turns out she is a teenager who is broken inside, steals, yearns so much for her father that she loves running like her father did, he finds and unite her father to her.

From the movie, I learnt about the hurt that everyone carries but still acts fine while some engage in hurting others because they are hurt. The teenage girl steals whatever she comes across, and I think I understand that she was trying to save them to sell off for money to go find her dad, although the story never revealed it.

The movie reminded me that humans make mistakes that stings very hard but are undoable. The father of the teenager said something that strike me deep... "God kept me alive to recieve my punishment, being blind". He actually realizes what he did wrong in his youth and decided to accept the result of his actions which paid off.

I also can not help but learn more into the fact that knowing God deeply changes things for you from the inside out. The teenage girl who steals almost anything, found Jesus, accepted him and knew that her stealing was bad on God's sight, she returned all the stolen items and focused on God and her race which she won so impressively.

The highlight of the story for me is where the teenager's father who was once a runner, coached the daughter from his sick bed and she became the winner. Even though I wished the man didn't had to die, I figured he had fulfilled what was keeping him alive and that was making peace with the family he abandoned years ago.

I also found out about the Kendrick brothers who produced the movie and other movie that are similar to it. I think it's great to find brothers making the same thing work out. The movie was a nice watch for me but I'll only recommend for who is very interested in a movie about God and owning up to mistakes. Check it out if you are.
